We have 529 plan and I started it. But my mother contributes via Upromise. Should I try to make my mom the owner? Would I be allowed to do this or it is how you started?

I am applying for FAFSA for grad school and I am 22 years old. Since I do not need my parents information on my fafsa, do I need to include the fact that my brother is also in college when I question the number of family members in college or should I click zero since I'm applying independently from my family.

We as parents have significant student loans of our own with a reasonably high income making it nearly impossible to assist. EFC was high so our daughter qualified for very little aid. Curious if appealing EFC is possible as our resources are tied up to resolve our own student loans??

Hi Brian - It's worth reaching out to the financial aid department. Unfortunately, there isn't one "across the board" answer to what schools specifically require in order to submit a success appeal as it can vary from school to school. But it certainly does not hurt to try.

Is it not a good idea for students to file independently?
@TheScholarshipSystem

FAFSA has strict rules for filing as independent students. This website provides more guidelines on who can file as independent: studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/dependency

As far as FAFSA form filing concern if the student has a joint saving account with the parent, will this be parent asset rather than student asset similar to 529 account?
@TheScholarshipSystem

It depends on who uses the account and what the intention is. If the student uses it, manages it, and is the primary user, then the student should report it.

Is there still time to receive grants or scholarship money for Autum 2023 enrollment?
@TheScholarshipSystem

Yes. Many schools have FAFSA deadlines of May or June. There are also several scholarships offered in the summer months for the following fall academic period. Options may be limited, but it's still not too late!

How can you make a student independent?
@TheScholarshipSystem
Жыл бұрын
A student is independent on FAFSA if they are at least 24 years of age, married, on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, financially supporting dependent children, an orphan (both parents deceased), a ward of the court, or an emancipated minor.
