Yes! I read the books with absolutely zero idea what I was getting into, the only think I knew was Chinese author, and scifi. Well, and super duper beloved in China. It made some of the early going a little bit challenging and confusing but was soooooooo worth it. I think it is the absolute best way to consume these books. I'm a little sad for the show watchers, who won't be able to discover it in such a pristine way, as even this trailer gives enough hints about what it's about that it spoils some of the mystery and the mindblowing moments from the first book. I'm really glad this is going to bring the books to a wider audience though, they so, so, so deserve that.

Same with most good shows. Probably part of why dumbass idiot shows like survivor get such high ratings. Cuz you can easily describe every episode of the show in 1-3 sentences just by describing the first episode, and it's the same as the other 9000ish episodes.. 'Glorified popularity contest on an island'. Can't really do that with a show like this. So it will only get good ratings because Netflix did so well pushing the show. Just like with Stranger Things. But if it wasn't on the home page of everyone's Netflix, it'd never make it past a season.

Netflix “embraced diversity” by replacing the Chinese protagonist with five sufficiently racially diverse, non-Chinese ppl. lol you can’t make this up. Physiognomy is so important in casting. Benedict Wong looks to be a much better choice for the rough-hewn Da Shi than the actor in the Chinese-produced series. On the other hand, I am a bit sad that for commercial reasons, Netflix replaced so many Chinese protagonists with international people. To me, part of the appeal in the 3-Body trilogy lay in its uniquely Chinese setting and cultural backgrounding. Anyway, thanks Pete, for all the work that you do!

I'm not upset really. Tencent is making their own adaptation. The thing is, no matter how Netflix go about it, it will never be widely accepted by native Chinese readers on the simple fact that it's not made by native Chinese. They need to hire mainland Chinese actors to play these roles and that's never going to happen because how many of them can speak fluent English? There are many great actors in mainland China but the language barrier is not going to work. So Netflix went the more appropriate approach, westernize as many of the characters that can be westernized without losing the essence. Da Shi is still Da Shi and Ye Wenjie is still Ye Wenjie. All other characters can be whatever nationality as long they portray the essence of the original characters. You cannot turn Ye Wenjie into a westerner because her backstory is very much tied to her character background and her experience being oppressed during the Cultural Revolution. The thing is, no matter how terrible the Netflix portrays that era, the actual event was 10x more terrifying...

uhg... if Luo Ji is really gonna be played by a non-chinese actor, that'll really suck for me. If you're gonna faithfully use the Cultural Revolution as background for Ye's decision, then it should be fair to have the "hero" character be Chinese also. And the idea of recycling characters to already be connected in the start (Zhang Beihai and Cheng Xin) also ruins the feel of the book. Part of the wonder that the book offered is how these people who don't even know each other end up affecting the course of history. The whole "Oxford Five" thing is just an excuse to connect five really important roles in the book via an arbitrary condition. I guess my point is, I wish the showrunners are less afraid of just introducing important characters as new in latter seasons. I was impressed by the trailer, but after watching this video, I'm back to cautious on this show now.

Man, I hope you are wrong about Luo Ji! He is one of the most important characters in the books and he definitely should not have been race swaped if that ends up being the case. Also story wise him showing up so early and being involved in the early stages is a massive departure from the books and might end up changing the characters overall arc in the books. His specific journey from kind of a non-caring, disinterested goofball to ... [spoilers] was amazing to read and was a huge part of the charm of the character. Hope they don't ruin it. Likewise hope you are wrong about Yun Tianming too. He is another hugely important character who [in my opinion] should not have been race swapped. I think it's perfectly ok to add new characters, increase involvement of international characters or race swap some around but the major players [in my opinion] should have all remained squarely Chinese.
@MattJett
8 ай бұрын
From the perspective of the faithfulness of the story's original telling, I do agree with you. However, I do bid you to consider the perspective that IF the events were real (the story is in the hard science fiction genre and does play into a historical telling of events), then these characters would likely not ALL be of Chinese descent. Ye would be for sure because of the cultural revolution and the course of events that led her losing faith in humanity and pushing the button to doom humanity. But the others have no reason they have to be Chinese. Therefore, considering the vast population of humans on Earth and how many ethnicities there are, Luo Ji and Yun Tianming would likely not have ended up being Chinese. So, as long as their character personality and traits remain the same, I don't see a name change and ethnicity change breaking the story's narrative and plot.
@iksaglam
8 ай бұрын
@@MattJett I certainly am keeping an open mind about it and I still believe it can be a great show as long as they are faithful to the characters like you said. I do agree with your take that in a real world scenario not all major players would be Chinese but in the books the actions and sentiments of those characters were so Chinese that I guess I have a hard time imagining them being another ethnicity. Also, [mild spoilers after this point, so please do not continue if you have not read the books] it can be argued that those two are the two major heroes that save humanity and I can argue that since this is a Chinese story in origin it could have been more respectful to the source material if at least one of them were still Chinese. But at the end of the day these are mild complaints. The trailers look promising and here is hoping that the adaptation will be as good as GOT season 1-4!

Its going to be a mess. The story is too complicated for massive deviations they'll dilute the story too much. Book one should've been the easiest to adapt due to how straight forward it is and the lower amount of time skips.There was no need for the directors to make this many changes when we've just had the Asian version that did a great job bringing the book to life. Book two deliberately had a different set of characters because the characteristics of book two irrevocably changed from being a low key story of why scientists were killing themselves to a flown blown alien invasion story which required a set of characters who were better placed to meet the challenge hence why the story shifted focus from a brilliant but lowly scientist in Wang to world leaders, 5 star generals and cutting edge biologists and Luo Ji who we know was only relevant due to the machinations of Ye Wenjie. If they brought forward more of the characters from book two to cameo in season 1, such as the wall facers and the wall breakers, then it makes sense. But from your description it doesn’t appear that they're doing that. It sounds like they're splitting up the Wang character and bringing in too much of a variety of characters from all three of the books. All of this just sounds like its going to be a cluster ****** As Cixin Liu stated Wang wasn't featured in the books beyond the first one because he wasn't relevant to the story anymore. The scope of the situation was way bigger than him once the mystery was uncovered. How do they intend to carry on with most of these actors beyond season 1 when Wang isn't really involved beyond that book? Why split his character up when he isn't relevant after this period in the book? All of this just looks like a mess.

So far I have seen two different narration of the Triology, and the second was more comprehensive and a bit more detail oriented than the first which explained more of the story. I don't mind knowing the ending of a story before the actual movie comes out. It makes it more interesting to watch. "Dark Forest" is the heart of this Triology. And coincides with Dr Hawkins belief of what aliens would do to other aliens when found. "Do not announce yourself to the entire galaxy were it would have negative consequences for the existence of your species!"

This source material is so much more complex and grand in scale that it shouldn’t be compared to GOT at all. GOT is my favorite show of all time But 3 Body Problem has the potential to be on a whole different level to anything before it. Even Dune doesn’t have the same level of complexity. I feel for the people who start watching this show without reading the books. You need to get your brain in tune with the ideas involved to even form good opinions about what the show is going to portray on screen. Read the books 🙏🏽

I'm equally excited and worried about the forecast changes. I knew they'd have to make some major character changes to accommodate a net-new audience, since the source material largely (as noted) plays out as personal internal experiences. They obviously want to reflect a larger global audience and not be as China-centric as the books. I just hope they can nail the big concepts down. Liam Cunningham is NOT what I expected for Wade, but he's a great actor. I think D&D are going to greatly expand his character beyond being essentially an antagonist in the books. I also am assuming the "Oxford Five" are basically the adaptation of the "Wallfacer Project" but we'll see...

I think the first book is the best. Books 2 and especially 3 are tough reads given all the speculative physics in them. Wickedly fascinating but tough. The most fun part was trying to decipher Tianming's story. Have a feeling Netflix will screw this up. The Tencent series is great.

I will wait and see later, it seems the gender swaping and moving the story too fast for TV adaptation is something that worries me. but i'm just one my opinion won't matter an won't change anything. time would tell. How ya been Pete & happy new year! I have a confession to make the only 2 books I’ve ever had a deep commitment to read was back to the future 2 before the movie was released and Dune after the my introduction to the david lynch on VHS. You & Quinn has changed my life in a good way to try to read more love ya for bringing us fan David S Goyer love that guy as my favorite show runner, I didn’t really know what that title really meant until I asked my cousin who works in film. Thank you the breakdown of The Silo. Now the 3 body problem accidentally stumbled into my wheelhouse by Quin’s Idea KZitem channel… he reads a lot of SciFi books… his reading of this story was an happy KZitem auto play accident… but as I listen to the audio not knowing the book’s title but the writing was very interesting and deeply intriguing, today still not knowing the title that Quinn was reading to his audience 8 months ago, talking to that same cousin about the new trailer it hit me that’s sounds familiar oh wait that’s that this story … I cant wait now glad to see you here for us Pete.

So I think this looks great, but I really don't live the internationalization angle. And the whole, "we're making it for a global audience so we needed to globalize it" is some weak sauce. Most Hollywood projects tell American stories, but market them to a global audience. They just don't want to come out and say that they are worried that a show with an entirely Chinese cast wouldn't be as merketable in America. Which may unfortunately be true, but still feels a little icky to pander to.

I read the books, more than once. I watched the Chinese series. I will treat the US version as it is. The Chinese series take a long road to tell the story, but it needs that time, so that the tale weaves its way. It is not immediately "gripping", but each episode helps the audience to patch together the final climax. I hope the US series can avoid the "gripping" details that host "What will happen" dialogue "in the next exciting chapter.....".

Here's the thing about Dave and Dan. When they're adapting books to the screen, they might be the best at it. Seasons 1-4 of GOT were the greatest seasons of TV ever. Seasons 5 and 6 had some issues but were still pretty effin good. This is because they were still working off the events in the books. But after Season 6, they were on their own. They had the outline of where the story was going but not the story to adapt. And what we got was ummm the worst. Visually stunning (for the most part), very well acted, and the score was magic has it has been since the first time the opening credits played in season 1. But the writing was about as good as 3 month old milk you forgot about in the back of your fridge. In this, the books are finished so dan and Dave will be in their element. Plus samwell tarley and sir Davos seaworthy are in this. I'm 100% in for it this series, because this is what D and D are best at.
