A tip that you should do every time is get comfortable, plant both feet, get your hip planted, also an elbow and use both hands on the stinger, if your right handed grip the stinger in your right hand and use your left to cradle your right. Stroke your intended path so you wont get in a bind half way through. Sometimes you'll want to adjust your position a bit to continue your weld, just move your ark forward while you get the new position then come back and continue where you left off, any trace you'll be running over with the weld.

Why all downhand for this particular weld? When I do all-position TIG welding, we go uphand whenever below the horizontal. Obviously, my specialty is TIG welding of specialized metals, but I have recently been trying to improve my stick work, 6010, and 7018, to be specific. In the 6G position, would you still do all downhand? Does it penetrate enough from the 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock positions? After the 6010 root pass, are the filler passes still 6010, or is all the rest done with 7018 (or only cap with 7018)? Also, what amperage and polarity is being used here?
@carlosrobertson8265

Pipelining is typically all downhand with cellulose rods. Position welds done for boiler code have to be uphand 6010 or TIG root with 7018 fill and cap.

Also when you weld bend your rod's. If you have your rod straight in the stinger your out of position for your body. Clamp it into your stinger and bent the rod end 45 degree this will get you your stinger to be closer to the pipe allowing you for more support and there for a better weld.

That's a different technique as here in Australia on 6-8 inch pipe we use 4 tacks(prevent gap change from one side to the other), weld over head to vertically up, with a key hole and a flick motion. This is so foreign as how do you know if the root run is going well if you can't see it when welding.

I’ve been doing my practice trying to see what I can notice in my own stuff as I practice and I’ve noticed stuff like undercut or key holing then I’ll ask the journeyman about it and he’ll give me a demonstration or watch me do a bead then gives me a few tips and has me try again and in one month I made more progress than I did four years ago when I was taking a few classes in high school and early community college

5P+ really ? They flow to much and you can hide to easy your undercut mistakes with them. Use just the 5P so you learn your weld and welding pool better especially for overhead the 5P produces less fluid than the 5P+. Boehler Rods by voestalpine are a international pipeliner standard. Guess you ain't much into the welding yet otherwise you would know this product. BÖHLER FOX CEL are great for vertical-down welding. And than for your fill I would recommend BÖHLER FOX CEL 80-P which are 8010 or BÖHLER FOX EV 65 if you need to do vertical up which are A5.5: E8018-GH4R / E8018-D1H4R. Best method to learn is on a 6-8" pipe sch 40 in a fixed 45 tilt position at waist high of the ground. It is the most uncomfortable position to weld in because you can't sit or kneel and you can't stand in a relaxed position either. So 1 knee down is for me the best method and than put yourself a support brace somewhere against the pipe and play around with 6010 from root to full fill with it. This way you learn best how the rod flows. Do this for a few days. Also reuse your materials so learn cutting with the torch and grinding it. leave dirt behind on the pipe so you also learn how it welds when the material ain't clean this way you can later spot, stop and fix it before you been kicked of the job because you screwed welds up all the way. Nothing wrong with stopping and taking back out the root you just started because someone didn't clean it enough, sometimes acetone is your best friend on a china dirty pipe which happens to be used more than you think. Weld also with a lot of start stops. Most important for you tie, tag and later on take over job's.

And don't use dewalt.... get yourself some real quality grinders. Makita, Bosch, Hitachi, Milwaulkee in that order. Dewalts just burn up to quickly and are just to cheaply made. If you are out there and you run cord tools you are limited, go battery at least 5amp and have a dual charger by your rig sitting so your helper can swamp them out for you. Always TAG your Equipment so nobody walks off with it. 5AMP grinder last me about 4h so 2 battery in a 8h shift but I run 4 different grinders with 12 6AMP Makita Batteries now with a dual and quad port charger. The better you prep the better your weld gonna be.

I like a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 landing. I noticed he was going downhill. Is that just because he's trying to get out on the pipeline. We run this same 6010 rods at school and I struggle with running them downhill. I just choke the rod too much and the arc cuts out. But I'm really good with them root passes traveling uphill. I usually whip/pack it.

Hello WeldLab, I am attaching a cylinder to my mower blade which is flat. What angle do you recommend, 45 degrees? The cylinder will be upright and the mower blade will be flat on my work table? Thanks for any tips.

I was trying to learn on some pipe at school before I go to my welding school @ college and I had a 6010 1/8th on 45-55 amps and it kept getting stuck and everything I am very professional at my horizontal welds and welding square pipe together but for some reason I could. Not get the 6010 to stay arched I keep screwing up and I spent so much time putting a bevel in this pipe I even measured 1/8 gap in between bevel with the other 6010 rod and I racked it and I litersly could not keep my weld going either stuck or it would light and spit and spit idk what I’m doing wrong I wanna do it right or at least get it going before I have my teacher help he used to be a pipe liner guy any help would be awesome . I want to peruse my dream in welding pipes
