Welcome to Kyrgyzstan! We are so excited to explore this beautiful country and to start things off we went on a 3 day horse trek to Song Kul lake, one of the over 2,000 lakes in Kyrgyzstan. What an introduction to this incredible country!
Horses are very important to the way of life in Kyrgyzstan. Historically the Kyrgyz people lived a nomadic lifestyle and some of the population is still semi nomadic today. They stay in the towns and cities during the winter but as soon as spring arrives, they move back to the valleys and mountains where they set up their yurt camps so their herds of sheep, goats, horses, and cows can graze freely in the wild.
We stayed in traditional yurt camps both nights while on the trek. A yurt is a semi-permanent residence made from wood beams, felt, and animal hides. It resembles a large tent but is more durable and decorated. Yurts were and still are integral to nomadic society.
The scenery along the trek and at Song Kul Lake was beautiful but our favorite part was definitely getting a small glimpse into the semi nomadic life that many of the Kyrgyz people still live today!
