Fully agree with the “know your destination” and “leave if you don’t feel safe”. I personally ask for the destination as soon as I get to the meeting point so I can set my phone gps in case I get separated. Or if it starts getting too sketchy, I’ll break off and just show up to the destination at my own comfort. As for the “stay in the front”, I personally stay in the back as I don’t know what others are going to be doing behind me or how much they are paying attention. Also, I prefer to stay in the back so that I can 1) see what kind of riders are in the group 2) help if something happens 3) lead if someone gets left behind. But I’ll have to try that when I ride with a group where I know the other riders and their style.

Quoting one of my favorite reverse-inspirational posters, “None of us is as dumb as all of us.” One look at that mob scene and I would have been out of there. One note of caution, though: riding toward the front also means you have the knuckleheads behind you, trying to catch up to or pass you. Also, speeding up to catch up means any issue at the front of the line will be greatly magnified both by the back of the pack riders’ increased speed (compared with the forward riders) and that they may have a collision at full speed. [Each successive rider down the line has less time to react, possibly meaning they literally crash before they perceive a problem.]

Great analysis Lali I have found that talking to friends on the ride or just observation usually sets off the spidey senses and smaller groups tend to be tamer some say there is safety in numbers but not always. I like numbers of five or six riders. Then again I do like just taking a ride alone to block out those things in life that sometimes we can't control but makes it feel less bitter. Because you're in control of that machine and your alone. That's great. Love the editing. You've definitely done this alot. God love ya be careful and ride safe my friend.

I've seen too many in the front get hurt from ones cutting up behind them and not paying attention, then rear-ending the guy in front of them. in the back I can watch what the riders in font of me are doing and cut-out from the ride if it gets too crazy. it's kept me safe for 27 years of riding. Best group rides are the smaller ones, with people you know and share a similar riding style with. In groups with randoms or unknowns, best to ride sweep or close to the rear, to keep an eye on everyone, and also to minimize the chances of anyone running into you from behind. Also like you said, "ride your own ride", and duck out if things aren't sitting right with you anymore.

I've been riding in all sorts of groups and alone for decades, and I found this a very sensible video. I DO think the first choice, cut and run, is the best tip. Staying towards the front is always a good idea. Inexperienced riders tend to want to hang in the back as to not become hazards. No one really wants to be back there. Best group ride ever, we where being led by Mackinac county Sherriff. He's running through the rules of the ride before we take off. At one point he says what do we do when we get across the bridge, the group yells out burnout!, He just calmly says 'and no'. We all behaved and where rewarded with some police free time at the destination.

When I go to Pennsylvania or you come to the San Francisco Bay Area I want you to be my buddy! We seem to have the same goals: -have a good time -stay clear of idiots -actually reach our destination without squeezing the butt-cheeks (too often)🤣 I prefer riding towards the rear of the group. They're usually slower back there and in no hurry to get where we're going.

When I had a bike I drove it like a car and that was for 12 yrs. I've known people that was in accidents that couldn't remember their own family and people that died. Safety is always important.
