PLEASE READ! The most important thing to get right in your studio is room acoustics. This video does not cover acoustics because for the sake of the video I wanted to keep it short. Also, I DO NOT recommend any foam products (which are cheap) So before commenting about the lack of acoustics in this video just know that getting your room right will make THE biggest difference in the quality of your music.

PreSonus Eris e4.5 user here. Not as much low end as most 5-inch/6-inch studio monitors out there. But not only are they pretty neutral. The fact that they can reach some low end that most 4-inch studio monitors are incapable of is ridiculous. I'll pair them with a couple of Kali LP-6 someday. But for intermediate and beginner mixing/mastering engineers, the Eris e4.5 are a solid starting point for the price. 👍👍

What people always seem to forget about is the difference between music production, i.e. songwriting and composing, vs mixing (and mastering for that matter). Yes, Billie Elishe's album was written, composed and mostly recorded in a bedroom, but the final mixing was done elsewhere. Finneas mentioned on Pensados Place that a) he usually has the final mixing being done by a mixing engineer (can't remember his name) and b) they would book short sessions at commercial studios once in a while. If you take into consideration that most sounds on that album are either virtual instruments or crazy sound effects that where recorded wherever they found them, there's only 3 major things left that actually were recorded at their house: Vocals, pianos and acoustic guitars. In my opinion, neither of which is particularly picky with room acoustics - as long as you're not recording them in a bathroom with tiled walls, you should be able to get some decent results. Considering this, I think you can make some fantastic music without even spending anything near 3400 USD. Your monitors may not be the best ones available or even particularly good, but as long as it doesn't get in the way of the creative process, it won't matter. If you end up with a song which you think has some potential, have it mixed by someone in a professional studio. Do the best you can to make the "rough" mix sound as good as you can, so that the mixing engineer has less work to do and doesn't end up spending an entire (expensive) day at this song. Doing this once in a while will be way cheaper than buying high-end converters, monitors and rebuilding half of your house to fix acoustic issues. In other words, you don't need lots of expensive gear to write great music. Sorry for the rant and great video with some much better choices regarding what to spend your money on than that guy (who came across like an Universal Audio sales manager) listed in his video.

Solid recommendations, for sure. Good options for various levels of $. I actually like the Quantum suggestion for myself...solo singer/songwriter, as I have some hardware I'd like to utilize (compressors, etc.). Since I recently invested in Studio One, I think the combo may be the way to go, though I am considering other less expensive/more expensive options as well. Thanks for your valued opinions.

Bare in mind when looking at options, there is a bug with the prism converters and studio one where it won't export audio and will lock up. It's ok if you're printing mixes to a stereo channel and doing it that way, but if you want to use the export function, or export masters from their "mastering window" 'project' feature, it ain't happening and will lock up every time. Prism is a good choice for the higher end, I use a prism ad/da in my mastering studio, I also use studio one as a daw. But I don't (and can't) use the project window feature for sequencing an album/ep, exporting ddp masters etc, and have to use a separate daw for that. Studio one also doesn't have s curves on the fades weirdly, so not the best for top and tailing. Just some things to consider whilst considering interface options as a studio one user.

I'd also add plugin-wise, IK multimedia have a "mixbox" which is 70 effects plugins in a 500 series format, for the one time price of $249.99. That Quantum is indeed a steal at the price, thanks for sharing.

Are you a fan of mixing with a sub in most cases? I have Yamaha HS8s, and I chose 8 inch monitors to avoid having to use a sub. Recently, I've had a few people tell me that I should consider one. What do you think?
@SidotiSound
3 жыл бұрын
8” is getting close to not needing a sub if your in a small room. It for me I’d always have a sub because I want to know what’s happening between 20 and 50. I will check my mixes without the sub sub once or twice. But it’s almost always on. My room and speakers are dialed in.
@error8418

One thing to consider is that the sub basically turns everything into a 3 way system, thereby taking some work off of the monitor's woofers, which might clean up the mids a bit. At least in theory.
@SidotiSound

The sub can be your friend or your worst enemy. You have crossover point, time alignment, and volume to all get right. But when you do it’s awesome.

Waveform is AMAZING. $69 gets you a combo of Logic/Ableton in one, by a company owned by the folks behind Prism. Bought it on a whim a couple of years ago (already use Cubase), and I was floored by how good it was. These days there are many great options, budget really isn't an excuse.
