Doula from the UK here. Sometimes taking the baby’s temperature regularly only makes new parents more paranoid, ..just think…New parents, keep baby’s head warm (that’s the biggest source of heat loss for a newborn who hasn’t got much hair). If you’re cold, baby is cold. If you’re hot, baby is hot. Just REMEMBER, baby is NOT running around like a headless chicken trying to get things done; nor are they walking and pushing a buggy. If you were lying in bed, trying to get to sleep, what covering would you need? MAY I ADD that this does NOT apply to highly air conditioned homes OR homes that are super well heated. If you were to lie down in your environment for over an hour the aircon will cool you, and the heating will warm you. Babies are not as good as you at regulating their body heat.

Although it makes sense, it’s simply not true…at least here. In Louisiana, it’s hot. Many families run their AC and house temps vary from 80 degrees to 64 degrees depending on the family’s personal preferences and budget. I’ve seen all ends of the spectrum prior to encouraging parents to take temps…and even still, our babies are often too overdressed when we come by. We prep our mamas in advance to be prepared to take temps at home occasionally. It helps them to feel more confident and actually LESS stressed the first day or two postpartum until they get to know their baby.

These were great tips! I’m so excited to feel like a boss mama putting these to use. Also the circumcision recommendation feels like another really good reason not to circumcise at all, an optional non lifesaving surgery that puts a baby through pain and has repercussions such as poor infant/parent relation just has wrong written all over it.

I live in Belgium. Here, parents are taught to take the temperature rectally, as this is the most reliable measurement. No one does it any other way until past the toddler age. We are taught to dress babies just like we dress ourselves, +1 layer if it is cool (cause we are moving, and babies are lying still, thus can get cold faster than us), + a cover/blankee when going outside on a cold day. Feeding on demand is a standard. Oh, and genital mutilation - most cringe even hearing those words... Just saying how it is done in Belgium, generalizing.

My son is almost 3 months and I still found all of these tips useful. We actually waited until he was a month to get him circumcised. (I’m a new mom and didn’t understand that I had to schedule that appointment.) We waited until our one month check up with my OB and then realized I was supposed to say something sooner. Watching this is so reassuring because I definitely could tell the difference of when he was hungry or in pain. My baby often sweats as well. The family makes jokes about it being hereditary on his dads side but this video was also helpful with the temperature tips. Being a new mom the older family members around are very strict on covering a baby up to avoid them getting sick. We live in FL, it gets HOT and I constantly tell them he sweats. Thank you for this video !!
