One of my favourite parts of the return of the king is when Sam looks up into the sky in Mordor and sees a lone star - “There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

When you mentioned Pippin and Merry being scared as a contrast to Sam's courage - in my mind, bravery is not the absence of fear; it's facing that fear, choosing to go there _even though_ you're terrified. @@fisharepeopletoo9653 Exactly! All of my favourite literary heroes, or the ones I truly see as such, are honestly very flawed - and in the beginning often quite cowardly (or in the very least, very unlikely to be considered "heroes"). It's the ability to overcome all that, the strength to step up and face all those fears, in spite of everything - and most of all, in spite of THEMSELVES - that make them heroic and inspiring in my eyes. If they're just unafraid from the beginning, the decisions they make feel easy. What the characters I'm talking about do is anything _but_ easy. Fun fact: when you were talking about how they showed the weight of the Ring and mentioned the "sounds" it makes, the score associated with Sauron / Mordor / The Nazgul is taken from probably the *heaviest* piece of music known, the Dies Irae which is the Latin chant for the end of the world, literally the Day of Wrath, when all of mankind shall be judged and go on to eternal bliss or eternal agony at the end of days. The weight of the ring is literally the weight of the end of the world.

Mom once told me that the reason for Sam's hesitation to give the ring back was different from anyone else who held the ring. Sam didn't want the ring for himself. He was just afraid of how it heavy and painful the ring was for Frodo, and what it was doing to him.

One of my few lasting annoyances with changes Jackson made -- and understand, I *LOVE* these movies -- is how they changed the scene in Gondor from Sam waking up last to Frodo waking up last. I understand that for cinematic purposes, it's easier to keep focus on Frodo as the central figure, but that moment of Sam waking up was SO important. He woke up last, recovered last, because he'd endured _so much_ during the journey in his effort to help Frodo: he gave Frodo most of the food and water, he stayed awake to allow Frodo to sleep, he kept Frodo's spirits up, he carried most of the gear, he fought orcs and giant spiders, he carried Frodo and the Ring, etc. The moment where Sam wakes up in Gondor after the Ring is destroyed is such a meaningful acknowledgement that Sam was _not_ just a sidekick to Frodo; he is every bit the hero that Frodo was, and I never liked that the movie took that moment away from him.

Simplified, I see Sam and Frodo as the Physical and Psychological. Sam has to be active, walk up and down the secret stairs, fight the spider, fight the Orcs, carry Frodo. Society values and recognizes physical feats of strength and positivity no matter what as something intrinsicly good, which is why Sam is most peoples favorite. However, this also perfectly represents the stigma and failure to understand Frodo's psychological struggle, and his value carrying the one ring for months on end - that is not in any way, shape or form easier than what Sam is more extrovertedly showcasing.

I remember in the books we do get to have a scene where the ring is trying to sway Sam while he has it and is alone (when he's going to rescue Frodo) and they are so close to Mordor and it's power is quite strong, but it still couldn't sway him and the illusions it was trying to cast to manipulate him cracked because the things that Sam desired above all were too pure. I believe Sam may have been one of the few who the ring couldn't have corrupted directly. He could be corrupted separately (he was so against Gollum that he couldn't see him struggling to come back to the light and couldn't see why Frodo needed to believe that he could), but not directly. I believe that Sam's struggle to give Frodo back the ring wasn't because he (Sam) wanted to keep it, but because he knew the pain that carrying it would mean for Frodo and didn't want that. As an aside, I feel another great Sam cheerleader speech was after the Nazgul encounter (the "something worth fighting for" speech but that was in the other film)

The final words of the series, Sam's words, reflect how his journey, his burden, is over. When he says, "well, I'm back" points out his long awaited return to a simple life, a life he had dreamed of and longed for back before all this started, there in the pub over a pint pining over Rosie. He had married her and they had children but he did not finish his journey until he saw Frodo safely dispatched to the undying lands. Then at long, at Bagend with his wife and children around him he acknowledges the end of the story, his story because that what LoTR actually is. Or it 2am and I'm totally overthinking this.

Tolkien actually wrote another chapter which his editors cut. It shows Sam's perspective years later as he reflects on the events of the story and the fates of his companions, and it shows a glimpse of his family life once his older kids are mature enough to understand what he went through. Only just found this channel, great stuff! There are a couple great themes to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and near the top is the idea that true heroism is in doing your part where you are, just doing the best you can. Tolkien created a world in which nobility (as in having noble blood) really did mean something, Aragorn's ancestry really did destine him for greatness, and yet Aragorn isn't the hero. From the start, it was the hobbits, the little people, farthest from that kind of inherited nobility, that would actually bring about victory for the free peoples of Middle Earth. And then it goes a step farther: Frodo was at least from the gentry of the hobbits, but the most heroic and incorruptible of all was Sam, the simple gardener and servant. Even in a world where kings really are better than commoners, the simplest and humblest servant from among the simplest and humblest people can be the true hero (so how much more so in our world, where there is no Elvish blood to elevate a king). So, yeah, with his simple, humble virtues, Sam really is *the* hero, and I love the traits that you highlighted, it says so much about who Sam is and who we ought to try to be.

The best compliment i EVER got in my life was when I was my best friend's assistant stage manager for a school play. I did whatever I could to help make it happen, and on opening night she wrote me a note that said "you are my Sam. I could not have done this without you." I don't save sentimental stuff - I still have that note.

I love that you mentioned the score in the scene where Sam carries Frodo up the mountain. The music is so perfect: The return of the penny-whistle, playing that little fragment of the Shire theme as Sam reminds his friend what they're fighting for, and then the Valinor theme when Sam picks Frodo up, telling us that Sam, by simply refusing to give up on his friend, is doing the very work of eternity. Gets me every time.

I always loved what Sam said to Frodo in The Two Towers when Frodo was clearly in turmoil during his quest to destroy the ring. Frodo: What are we holding onto Sam? Sam: That there is some good in this world Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.

Just at the start and I'm already realizing things. One time we went to an intense haunted house, like we spent 30mins or more there and it was legit terrifying. And for some reason, despite me being a coward with horror stuff, I was the one at the lead of our group pushing forward. I was fueled by anger not at anyone or anything, just the desire to get over my situation. Although it's not as righteous as Sam's, but I can see how anger can help fuel you against fear.

Thank you very much for this. i just watched your video on bullying in the Harry Potter series. I'm watching these because I've decided to take a break from using social media to communicate to my friends for a week or so. I decided to do this because my relationship with my friend had been getting tense. She's been getting constantly on edge by my behaviour and I've been continuing it. I've been looking at the relationship as dying for a little while now and I've basically been waiting for her to decide she doesn't want to hang out with me. I've known that this isn't a very good mindset to hold but I didn't want to do anything about it because I reason it as "if they don't like who I am, or if I am being bad for them, they will leave" and while it is true that they will most likely leave if they don't like me, that doesn't mean that I should put 0 effort into becoming a better person for my relationship with them. I'm typing this paragraph out just to tell you (though I don't think either of you will actually read it) because I wanted to say, thank you for convincing me not to give up on my friendships and relationships so easily.

Due to be high risk (asthma, among other health problems), I have been very careful about self quarantine. My friend keeps asking when she's gonna see me again, and I keep having to tell her she won't see me until the pandemic is done. It feels frustrating because it feels she doesn't respect my right to choose to self quarantine for my health. But, her father died last month, and I came out of quarantine to visit her for the day. I couldn't go to his funeral or wake but I went to her private home while she was alone and visited all day. It was good to see her and to know I helped in her time of loss, because she needed me. Since then she has stopped asking for me to come see her and constantly texts me and our friendship has healed. I hate that it was the loss of her father that did this, (no, not pandemic. He had a heart attack.) but it has helped heal the rift growing deeper and deeper.

Sam has always been my favorite too. I never noticed how he uses anger. I went through a lot of trauma as a child and young adult, and I've reacted with anger (not often healthy or righteous though). But in my brain I'm sure it makes sense, because it's a reaction to trauma (threat that once existed). Maybe I saw that in him and identified. I'm trying hard now to get help with my anger. One of my therapists told me, at the beginning of my healing journey a few years ago, that anger is great when used appropriately because it gets sh!t done lol

Sam's strong friendship and devotion to Frodo is what kept him going. He and Frodo had been friends before the journey, much like Merry and Pippin, except where Merry and Pippin were rambunctious scoundrels who wound each other up, Sam and Frodo were more solemn friends - Frodo was smart, perceptive, and sensitive; Sam was more grounded, comforting, and protective. Frodo was involved in lots of things Sam didn't understand, but Sam knew how to keep Frodo grounded when it seemed too much for him. Even in the darkest moments, Sam never strayed from "what's best for Frodo, what would Frodo want?". He didn't let Frodo go off on his own, he didn't let Frodo's casting him aside for Gollum stop him from protecting Frodo. Sam was courageous and persistent because he was doing it for his best friend. He forgave Frodo because their friendship was solid. It was well established and survived repeated tests. They apologized to each other, and they never stopped valuing the other.

Can we please address Sam's violence? I totally agree that Sam's mistrust of Gollum and his protection of Frodo were warranted and positive. That said, his judgemental rage towards Gollum, building up to wrathful violence is his character's weakest moment. His heart was in the right place, but he let the extreme situation and his rage overtake him so he no longer had control of his emotions or actions. Fighting defensively is one thing, but Sam is crazed and dangerous in that moment. I love Sam and I agree that overall he's a brave, selfless, determined character to be emulated, but it's still worth examining when his behaviour is less than ideal.

When Frodo first sees Gollum in his retched state much later - he starts to pity him. “For now that I see him, I do pity him.” (The Two Towers, “The Taming of Sméagol”) This is not out of being gullible but more so out of pity - and later, empathy. Because of this, Gollum was able to get on his own good side until the Forbidden Pool scene when he thought that Frodo had betrayed him. However, Frodo spares Gollum his life begging Faramir that Gollum should not be harmed. Faramir agreed, as long as Gollum would be Frodo’s servant - though Faramir’s warning was that Gollum had evil that was growing. Sam was frustrated, not knowing what his friend and master was doing because he simply didn’t see Gollum as trustworthy. “[He] stared at his master, who seemed to be speaking to some one who was not there.” (TTT, “The Taming of Sméagol”) “It is difficult to exclude [pride and posessiveness] from the devotion of those who perform [Sam’s services]…In any case it prevented him from fully understanding the master that he loved, and from following him in his gradual education to the nobility of service to the unlovable and of perception of damaged good in the corrupt.” J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter # 246 However, this didn’t seem to be any fault of his - as he could possibly just not have the understanding needed to show compassion to Gollum at this point, before he would have any contact with the One Ring… (L246 cont.) “…[especially] in the incident of the Forbidden Pool. *If he had understood better what was going on between Frodo and Gollum, things might have turned out differently in the end…Sam could hardly have acted differently.*” However, Sam did reach the point of pity at last for the good of Gollum, after reaching the cracks of Mount Doom.

Hi guys. I just came across your channel and I love it! There is one theme regarding LOTR that I would love if you guys addressed! I hear so many people talk about how they HATE! Frodo because he is so weak and whiny. I feel like in western culture we expect the hero to never show weakness. I personally feel that Frodo is one of the strongest characters in LOTR. People act like they wouldn’t have given up if they were in Frodo’s shoes. I feel like the reason people don’t like Frodo is because he is so human and brings out peoples insecurities in their own human frailty. I’d love it if you guys could address these things.

Just popping in to say that Tolkien based the character of Sam off of the men who he was conscripted with during the battle of the Somme in WWI. The fact that they had no previous battle experience or proper training, had no way of knowing what to expect, just that it quickly became apparent it was gonna be bad but persevered with radical acceptance of the grimmest of situations, bravery / courage, loyalty, and dedication / perseverance. The 'not soldier soldiers'. When you understand this as well it adds so much more depth to Samwise's character.

I have always apreciated Sam, diferently from Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli or any other combatant character, Sam had not only reasons to be brave, but it was kind of a hard mission for him, i mean we know that Hobbits are not actualy the most capable warriors in middle earth, but he was still such a honored, fearless and purely minded man, he should be put amongst the bravest warriors who fighted this war. He's one of my favorite characters, paired with Thorin (his last quote always cast some tears in my eyes), Aragorn (this man is the perfect specimen of a gentleman, a leader and a true warrior) and obviously Gandalf (you can't say you like Lord of The Rings if you don't like Gandalf, always loved these mysterious and yet friendly characters).
