I used to be afraid to use too much paint. I was always afraid of wasting it. Then, I realized that the richness of color and the blending possibilities made using extra paint worthwhile. I can offload the extra paint onto my sketch pad, and I create initial layers of background which I use with my grandchildren on a small 5x7 gelli plate. Thanks for the tip about offloading extra paint - to my surprise nothing is wasted. 🎉

@@artwhisperer88Fulton would you ever think of making a video of making a Gel plate from Gelatine? Many people cannot afford these plates. The large format that you have is $199 in Aus!! But I think teaching how to make a small to medium one would be a fun video to watch. ❤

Hi, Fulton! Just wanted to pop in and say hello! I’m super behind in attending your sharing, of your beautiful self & works. I’ve been in an Art course daily, online..and studying with Miss Louise Fletcher..(you might know of her). Have you ever heard of this marvelous community called, “Art Tribe”? It’s international…fabulous, by the way! She’s an abstract painter, as am I. Fulton…what has been charming to me, as several other members, whom love Gelli plates…follow you ALL THE TIME! You’re quite a celebrity, in our art community! Thrills me completely!! I promise I’ll joyfully view your beautiful works asap…making canvases at the moment! Blessings, Fulton!🖼

Thanks for a great video! I have always been a watercolorist without much experience with acrylic. I always pull a ghost with either more paint or matte medium. You don’t find that necessary. How long do you usually have before it is too dry to pull? Estimate of course. Especially using watercolor paper, I’m impressed that you get these great pulls.
@artwhisperer88

wait time varies, but for me no more than 7 minutes
@jdmosaics
9 ай бұрын
I think you will find it is because Fulton uses a lot more paint at the start, the ghost is still wet enough to pull again. If it was dry he would paint over that and often does. I also use a Matt medium or a clear gesso sometimes to lift a ghost, depends if I want the background of my target paper to show through. Fulton has an MFA in Printing and it is so wonderful to watch his years of design knowledge in his well made videos. I feel very blessed indeed. Cheers

Anticipating that the translucent yellow may have been to dry for the ghost print (of course you knew it wasnt) I wondered - have you ever wetted your paper in an effort to revive/retrieve a ghost on the gel plate? As always I send you goodness in all forms 🙇🏻♀️
@artwhisperer88
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Yvonne. I am not a fan of wetting the paper because it deprives the paper of its ability to stick, hence being unable to pick up any image. In gelli printing the paper acts like a giant piece of tape which picks up the paint.

I’m not sure if I missed it, but do you use both sides of plate? Let’s say you use one side for a long time and it gets marks, can you flip it over and use the backside of plate?
@artwhisperer88

Absolutely! It's also a good opportunity to keep both sides clean with baby oil. The edges also get crusted with left over paint.

I love you work. Thanks so much for sharing. Question-I store my gel plates in their sleeve. But do you recommend keeping the plastic sheet on top of them when storing. I have seen recommendations 3:08 with and without. What do you recommend. Thanks so much!
@artwhisperer88
Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. Storage depends on how often you use the plate. The plastic liners act as a barrier against the oil staining whatever the plate is next to. If you place a piece of tissue on the plate and leave it for 30 minutes you'll see what I mean.

Hi Fulton - I've really been enjoying the videos! Something about those ghost prints - probably the texture - really does it for me. Just fantastic! I was wondering if you've ever tried PanPastels on the gelli plate. I was going thru my art supplies and found some duplicates, like 8 or so various colors. In better times i had bought a few box sets before I realized pastels weren't really my medium. But, I found they work wonderfully (esp w stencils) on my gel plate. I have way too many to ever use up in my life - are you interested in the duplicate set? I'd be happy to send them if you have a p.o. box, or contact you thru your email. Just let me know. Thanks for helping me get over my art block!

Why not start with a very small amount of paint? You can always add more, but slathering it on as you do only wastes paint.

putting too little paint is even more wasteful in terms of time. Remember this is being filmed in real time. Waste is an arbitrary term!

I love all three of these. So different and yet so vibrant. I love the lacy look of the arctic paint. I love the color so much that I ordered my own bottle. The days you post a new video are the best days. I keep trying to make something close to these but it’s almost silly how I go about it, sort of like getting lost on my way somewhere. Oh, the Qtip marks were awesome! Thank you.
