Bottom-line, from my own experience, is that research-based courses, Masters and (especially) PhDs, require an immense amount of self-motivation. You only get that if, like you said, you are incredibly passionate about what you are researching and you want to delve deeply and thoroughly into the subject. You should only do a PhD if you really, really, really, really, really x 1000000 want to do it, because of passion for the subject.

I'm glad you thought that. There's a lot of misconceptions about Cambridge because of its "mythical status" but most of them are patently untrue on the inside 🙂

This was so interesting! You mentioned that you went from zoology to data science. Did you have a background in that before your MPhil? Or was that part of the cichlid project?

Hey Amy! I did some bioinformatics as part of my undergraduate and masters degrees but that was only really in R.I did learn a lot about statistics too but I wasn’t ever really a “data scientist”. I then built on that baseline in my free time by teaching myself python and doing some fun projects ☺️

I understand the Mphil is more research based. What is your view of the Mphil in real estate finance at Cambridge. I understand Reading's Masters in real estate investment and finance is a better mix of academic and practical - also they seem to be the leading university in UK for real estate (only research part will be the dissertation part for that Masters and will be going into Private equity / fund management or asset management firm and not a PhD. Land economy department is very small at Cambridge and seems they are running of their 'Cambridge' brand name but still seens as good and they hold that global reputation. Personally, your zoology work seems far more interesting, but albeit need to crack on with my career and fact my undergrad was in mathematics and finance. Thanks
