I knew I was burnt out after nine years of practice. Reached a point where I don't even look at other people's paintings, much less practice, or watch videos such as this. But I am glad I clicked on this. I feel like this is new life breathed into me and I am actually looking forward to sitting down at the easel, realizing how far I came thus far, and just having some fun. I'm realizing that my goals were/are kind of off, and I'm considering an entirely new approach. Thank you!

dude, as a homeschooled kid, I do feel blessed to have had so much time to practice, gonna be different this year cuz collegeeee. But even so we all learn at different speeds, so I feel like all that work made me only even with everyone else who has seemingly less time, but I'm pleased because I have gotten better and will get better if I keep it up.

Thank you for your video. It's so inspirational! I've been working on becoming a better painter for a while now and finally got the guts to show my local Gallery my work. I entered three pieces to an Autumn Art Festival. Just received an email stating that I won third place and judge's Choice Awards. It doesn't mean I'm selling anything or that what I thought was bad it's good but a little recognition can boost your ego a lot

As to being in the moment - my favorite part of painting is loosing the sense of time and being with the paint. It’s like I do something to the paint and then react to what the paint does. It’s like dancing together.

Jess Karp experiments and is pretty free with what she does and she does amazing stuff alllll the time and she has shown some of her childhood art, so it took a long time for her to get there. But you can be a wizard between mediums and styles if you want to.

Yes, it is helpful. I haven't painted a single portrait or anything else that one would create with oil paint. I have a drawing of a dear friend I am working on, and my goal is to paint her portrait. I have other ideas for portraits as well. I am excited to get started, but I am missing an easel. I can't afford to purchase one, so I am going to build one with cardboard and hot glue. I love the lavender/blue highlights you used in her hair. It's a gorgeous painting! Thank you very much! Lisa

I’d love to paint but really don’t know where to start. One thing I’ve always noticed when artists show their progress is the chop and change of colour. I get that you’re putting down layers and need to build up but why go from one dark colour, to light and then back to dark in one layer. Seems like a waste of paint? Ps amazing painting!

I know it’s really hard when you are starting from nowhere. You need to find out where you are in your art journey and figure out your why . Why you want to paint ? What is it you want to achieve? Once you know what you want and why? You will be prepared to put on those hours of practice. When they go from dark to light and then go dark again is to balance the value scale in the paintings. This is possible in oils and acrylic painting but in watercolour we leave blank of paper to show the light.

I love to paint horses. My style has been realistic but really like the loose style better. I find myself going back and forth between them. Love your style of color and loose edges. Need to get myself back to doing my art but I am stuck.

Jesus🤔! You're really good🤔 !!! I just subscribed to your channel. I abandoned painting a long time ago. Last time I tried something like this was when I was in my teens. But I even insisted by kept on doing some easy sketches, freehand drawings and stuffs like that for a while, you know... but I got bored and I quit it as well short time later. Actually I realized was some sort of a mediocre wanna-be-artist, and I realized I was nothing but a very bad one to be honest and I lost the will to draw and paint short time later. But at that time there were no internet, channels like yours let alone cellphones to help me😁. It's been 35+ years... So, today I wanna thank you for the video and, believe it, because of you I'm really interested in get back and start it all over again.🤔 Thank you so much for the encouragement. I really appreciate it🙂👍🏻.

I'm that first example. Graphic artist by trade... marketing professional as a day job... farm owner... grandfather... adult kid caretaker at times... possibly ADHD... life gets in the way. I love to draw and paint. I jump from one thing to the next frequently. Good at things but not perfect at any. I'm not bad at oil painting but I'm not consistent and I'm nowhere close to where I want to be. Money isn't my goal as much as satisfaction in a body of works. I want to leave a legacy of quality work. If my kids make money off of it... good for them. For me, I just want to be happy with accomplishment. I am productive but lack focus. In a sense... a mess.

This is painting from the point of view of a culture where excellence is defined by sport and business, not art. It may be valid nevertheless, especially if you are selling classes to make a living. But it isn't the only point of view - it is very much of a certain time and, especially, place.
