Excellent video! This takes the "Just Follow the Recipe" out of sewing. Sewing is personal, not just a recipe. You can't just follow the steps and have it come out fine, and SO MANY sewists do not understand that. VERY IMPORTANT VIDEO!!

Not an exact answer to your question, but I find it most difficult to master fitting on a split pattern (ex. if the front piece is made up of three separate pieces).

More exact answer would be, as you mentioned, transferring your changes from your mock up to the pattern so you don't have to do the same fitting changes again and again 😊

Whole chapter of Pattern Alterations of 25 pages: Fitting, Basic Alterations and Advanced Alterations. Very clear diagrams showing how to tell if the fit is wrong at all points of the body and how to correct it, or to simply adjust the style to suit your own aesthetics (turn a fitted sleeve cap/head into a gathered one). I do have another one from Simplicity (Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book), but it's not as in-depth being only 270 pages. I also have a pattern MAKING book (this one assumes your sewing skills are advanced enough not to need sewing instruction) titled: "Pattern Making for the Home Couturier" by Hilda Kay, published by McCulloch Waterloo Press 1985. I am a fencer, and recently I have started thinking of fitting a garment as if I am learning a new technique. I can't just read about a new feint, for example, and then use it directly in a fencing bout. First I have to drill for god knows how many hours to get the movement down. Then I have to drill it some more in a sequence with other moves, and only then I can go test it out with an opponent. Doing the paper fit and the mock up are the drills - they are time-consuming, boring and repetitive and I know I'm going to scream the entire time while I unpick and resew my mock up five times in a row to get the fit right. But I just have to accept that doing the fitting drill is the only way that later I am proud of what I've made.

It depends - are you remaking something you've just made and are you using exactly the same fabric? If the answer to either of those is 'no', then it's probably not a good idea. If, by cloning, you mean re-creating something in your wardrobe that was shop bought but fits nicely, then it's definitely worth the time taken to create a toile as even with the most careful of measuring it's possible to introduce an error that you'll want to catch *before* cutting the good stuff.

I am small with relatively large bust, narrow back, large hips and bum, it's a nightmare as I am so far from the proportions and shape of sewing patterns, particularly the big 5. I disagree with what you said about making a mock garment first and that will help make the perfect garment. You said to make it out of muslin or old sheets or whatever. If someone is making a knit dress for instance, making a mock dress first is not going to help them fit into a knit dress because the fabric is totally different. I know what designers do, but muslin is not flexible like knit. I say, take precise measurements and fit the pattern to one's body and carefully, sew the pattern together constantly trying it on in the process of making it, and not waste time making the same garment first that may not fit at all or make things worse making the real one.

@@SewVintageAlex it's a year ago but kinda funny how you blame companies for "imagining sizes". The patterns they have is basically the average measurements of many people, which is why it mostly fit average sized people even though not perfectly. Plus size patterns require different calculation that's why most companies dont do it. But the essence of generalization of sizes is to cut down the cost of making clothes, unlike before industrialization started where only rich people had the privilege to get their garment tailored while poor people making their own garments. The key is to make clothing more affordable to everyone which is fair. Good for you for making your own garment then cause for me it is an expensive hobby that I really enjoy 😅

It sometimes takes a long time to get a pattern to fit properly, especially a tailored jacket or woven trousers for example. However, once you get the fit - you can use the pattern over and over with great results and fewer (if any) fit issues. Trousers made from the same pattern can be changed by adding pockets, moving the zipper from the side to the back, changing the waist band, the width of the legs....but the most difficult waist, hips, and crotch depth remain the same. Thanks for explaining the basics Evelyn.

1. I learned not to try to fit myself, or someone else, when certain people were around to interfear in the process. Snide remarks, and having the task jurked (taken) out of my hands, should never be allowed; because, they will lead to mistakes everytime. Always wait until abusive people are not around (these may be family members). 2. Never rush. "Haste makes waste" is real when you are trying to learn and/or are trying to make a good fit. Take the time to make a fabric tester. 3. Always measure, at least twice. before making a cut into your expensive fabric. 4. If you have a garmet that fits you well, don't forget to check out the measurements of that garment to the pattern you are getting ready to use. 5. Ask questions of people that have more experience than you (who are humble, kind, know how to sew and love to teach others). You want to learn and not be discouraged. Not all fabric shop owners (or their staff) are good teachers.

Baste or something similar if you can get away with it. When doing mock garments for things that aren't super close fitting (so this definitely does not work for corsets) I use longer easy to remove stitches, cut only when I must, trying to otherwise fold the fabric and have all that bulk on the outside. I've saved hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars, on muslin and other mock up fabrics this way because I can just pull the stitches and have larger pieces still that I can use on my next mock up

Since I'm only looking to make more basic clothes though I should be able to get away with a method like yours. While I do enjoy sewing, I do also feel somewhat forced into learning it as basically nothing store bought ever fits me. So pleased that I found your channel. I'm about to watch the one about fitting without a mannequin. In the past, if I found a style I really liked and it fitted well, I'd make up several garments (usually dresses) with different fabrics. I'd forgotten about using kraft paper or older newspaper to make up your pattern since those tissues can be very fragile and will only hold up to so much tweaking. My mother and grandmother taught me to sew on an old Singer treadle machine. I'm 72 now and use a very heavy portable basic Kenmore while all my quilting friends have high-tech machines. There are days when I really wish for a treadle machine.

So far, the extent of my progress is watching your videos and sewing (lots of) pillow covers. I never learned to sew, as the women in my family were impatient and took every shortcut possible. I have two questions: How are the mock-up alterations transferred to the final version? I hope it doesn't require remeasuring, transferring to the paper pattern, and then cutting out the final version from that? Also, do you recommend mannequins for beginning sewers? It occurred to me watching this video that for a first attempt, having a mannequin would be super helpful. For me, the pin scratches from trying on over and over again are a deterrent to doing careful fittings. Finally, I'm sending warm, healthful wishes following your medical issue earlier this year, and sincerely hope you are now fully returned to the peak of health. Best, Annet

Evelyn, I could swear I saw a video by you about taking body measurements . I keep searching, but I can't find it anywhere. I know there are plenty of videos on this subject, but if I'm going to follow your advice about making clothes that fit properly it would be best to follow your advice regarding this task. If you or anyone can help me find that video, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance to anyone who responds to this.

i did GCSE textilles, was a brief trainee tailoress, did industrial sewing on sports tennis and badminton nets and did quite a few DIY projects that never turned out the way i wanted, which all ended at least 15 years ago XD I'm going on holiday to a hot n humid country, linen has been the suggested fabric to wear. I've worked out it would be the same price/cheaper to buy patterns, dressmaker doll, sewing machine, thread, fabric etc n make myself. I never did mock-ups n i never had an adjustable doll in the past. Luckily my area has a good selection of charity shops, so i'll be buying some bedding it seems XD My brain has been almost feverish with anticipation and desire to make my own clothes, to finally have clothes i actually WANT vrs what will do Take shorts, they are always too long n frumpy on me, or too short n revealing of my upper thigh flabbyness, now i can make them with All The Pockets, the length and width i desire

What discourages me is that I'm 59. The clock is ticking, so I must choose wisely what remaining garments I will have time to make. These extra steps will make garment take construction longer. Hopefully they will be worth it!

One thing I learned is that I would see a pattern in a book and would love the style and the material and I would buy it make it up and it was not the style for my body. and I would be so disappointed. I am a short 5'2" hourglass figure and I loved long flowing skirts and dresses. They I looked like a sack on me. Until I realized that I would never look 5'10" this types of clothes would never suit me. I need fitted dresses and tops. 50's styles and fit and flair, with a defined waist suit me best. Full gathered skirts or dress bottoms just add to much to my hips so a circle skirt or 3/4 skirt works best on my body. If the pattern skirt is a rectangle I take most of the fullness out of it by tapering the skirt to take away the fullness at the waist but still have it farther down. This has been the biggest change for me... finding my body style. I love the dresses of the Roaring 20's but I will never look like Daisy (from The Great Gatsby).

I’ve sewn for years and I have only sewn about 5 garments for myself. My figure is very curvy; small waist, larger hips-where the majority of my curve is in the back side, then narrow rib cage with larger breasts. I’m a nightmare. I’ll try making a muslim mock up and see how it goes.

I've been making my clothes pretty much all my life and if I still had all the clunkers that I ended up with, I'd have to add a room ... not just a closet ... to keep them in! I know those 3 steps would help me, it seems like a lot of work, but so is skipping them and going straight to a clunker! So anyway I would like to learn how to do those steps. Another challenge is to pick out a dress style that will work for my body, perhaps you have a video that addresses this challenge. If so, could you please let me know where to find it. Thank you very much, your videos are wonderful and I'm considering signing up for vintage sewing school, just haven't gotten up my courage/commitment yet.

I did sewing at school but we were never taught anything about actually fitting a garment, which is why I got disillusioned about sewing - I never made anything which fitted properly, bust darts were never in the right place. I'm watching quite a few of your videos at the moment so I can learn some useful skills - and I've learned a lot so far. I hope you're getting better.

A mock up first is so important before you sew your final real garment. It saves on any frustrating adjustments you have to make if you work them out on your mock up first. I love your how-to videos. Thank you for sharing. I still might need to take one of your classes though!

Hello I’m new to your channel and I love it! I do have a question about fitting. I’m making a dress for a child and the final look needs to be taken in a bit more. But I’m not sure where to begin. It’s the bodice giving me a hard time. Can It can be taken in at the side seams ? Or use darts? Or would I have to deconstruct the garment and take it back to the cutting stage? Please help. Thank you so much! And thank you for all the great tips!

The most valuable fitting information I have picked up in the past year is how to adjust for shoulders that are rotated forward. I never realized that this was the reason my shirts never hung correctly. I read about the adjustment in a sewing text and realized that that was me.

I've been a quilter for thirty years, but am now just beginning to make garments. Fitting is my biggest fear! It never occurred to me to make a muslin mock-up. Wow! I've just subscribed to your videos, and am loving all of them. Thank you!

Where is the best place to get the paper you use for your patterns and what is it called? I went to Amazon and the paper is flimsy just like the pattern paper. Thank you for helping me.

I start without a pattern and upcycle old jeans to a dress. The problem was, that I see the most pattern would’nd be fit on me. Tiny step by tiny step I try to fit garments and vintage clothes to my body. I think, the most important think to understand and learn is to trimm off old fashion and look and to find out how it is constructed

Of course there are some lucky people that fit perfectly into the standard sizes that patterns use. They are the object of envy, just like those who eat like pigs and never get fat.

In high school, at the time Vogue magazine had one garment made from a Vogue pattern. They had notes in the back, and when I read the notes for one beautiful jacket and it said "width increased 2" at the hip; body and arm lengths increased 2" each ..." it was VERY liberating!

Well, I feel a bit better about myself now because I already do this! Now if only I knew exactly how to alter the fit of things better when I know adjustments need to be made. 😅

I know, this is the longest to learn, but the good news is you only really have to learn the fit issues that apply to you and it's usually only two or three maximum, so you don't have to learn EVERYTHING! 😀

Sometimes i keep them with the pattern, so i have a base to work from already the next time i make something. Then all i need to do is modify for style, rather than fit. Sometimes my mockup(as the seams are all on the 'outside') turns into my lining, to save me cutting out any more fabric. Or....just finish it and wear it, and now you have two!
