Very informative instruction. I have some good keys for better practice sessions. Thank you.

Yeah, the articulation is the biggest thing I see, too. Another: playing in time. For some reason, a lot of classical players think that "swing" means "play behind the beat", and this is not really true. As a general rule, if you match the lead trumpet, you're fine. The actual beat alignment is set up between the rhythm section and lead trumpet, and a good starting point is to consider downbeats to be extremely accurately "on the beat", with offbeats "laid back" in many (but not all) swing styles. Really digging into beat placement, especially in a group where you're sight-reading and you don't know the other players, is actually one of the most difficult things in big band to do.

Agree - listening to the lead trumpet player will take you far!

Great lesson Shawn! I know this video is almost a year old by the time I'm posting this comment. So I hope it gets more views. It's good stuff. Unfortunately it is only through hind sight that I recognize that I was 'that guy' one time who subbed on lead and didn't have the maturity to see that I should have played 2nd (or even 3rd on that particular band). I was a young and very inexperienced player - not the classical guy playing jazz as mentioned in this video - just not self aware enough to know just how much I was really 'steppin in it'. On top of probably 'having an off night' I just didn't have the lead player maturity that matched the other musicians on the band that night. Worse, one of the guys tried very diplomatically to bail me out by offering to share the lead duties, but I said no, I got this. I didn't. And consequently learned a painful lesson...that could have been avoided.

Thanks for the kind words Scott. That is a classic story. I'm sure I was in the same boat more often than I care to admit when I was a younger player as well😂.

Do you have any resources to recommend for a more classically oriented player to practice reading charts?

Hey jack, check out the link below. While I would prefer if this was a book of Basie lead trombone parts, it is still a good group of charts to practice sight reading and playing style. They have a book of lead trumpet and Alto charts for common Basie tunes but no trombone, what gives🤷♂️. Hopefully that gets you started. www.alfred.com/gordon-goodwins-big-phat-band-play-along-series-trombone/p/00-25253/

As a classical player this is very helpful. Although It's kind of cringey at first since there are so many thibgs here that are big no nos in classical.

I hear you. I'm the opposite. Playing in an orchestra is definitely one of my weakest areas. I always feel like I am actively trying to "turn off" so much of the articulation and sound concept that is key to playing the styles I feel more at home in.
