My recommendation for watching this video is to "lather, rinse and repeat", but only if you're interested in winning more doubles matches. Very thorough and cogent treatment of a much neglected skill, Ashley. Bravo!

Thank you so much!!!! I always move to early or to late, until in a match a twisted my ankle when I was poaching. So after my injury I was not confident. Now, your explanation open my eyes, easy to understand. I will practice my timing! :)

Thanks for the excellent analysis into an under utilised tactic at club level. I found the point around timing of movement most valuable. Have moved to an extended length racquet in recent months which helps with confidence in being more aggressive at net and dialling up poaching. Keep up the terrific work.

Hey Anthony, thanks for your comments! Timing is vital, against better players you’ll need to get it perfect, against less confident players you’ll have a slightly bigger window to move! Thanks for watching 💥🎾

I actually feel more comfortable hitting my backhand volley but strangely, I do poach more on my forehand side. Thanks for the video.

Yes makes a lot of sense. Backhand volleys are often the better volley because you have your body behind it. There is less chance to do too much with your arm. But when poaching you're reaching and that is easier on the forehand side of course.

Great video. I am subpar at poaching and envy members of my regular tennis group who are good at it. Maybe this will help.

Absolutely, have a go when you’re volleying on the ad side (if you’re a righty) talk to your partner beforehand and don’t worry if it goes wrong! Good luck!

Is this common terminology that I am poaching on the ball number that I am about to hit rather than poaching after the ball that has just been hit? I am poaching on ball 3 (the ball count that has not been hit yet). Or I am poaching on ball 2 (return of serve) which is the shot that is hit when I start my poach?

I absolutely love to poach. At 195cm, with an exceptionally long reach, it really works for me. Every now and then, I get fooled by a shot down the line, but I would estimate my success rate to be somewhere around four out of five, maybe better. Occasionally, I will even poach a return-of-serve. In fact, some opponents, who now know my propensity to poach, will error out wide simply because they are trying to avoid me. Happily, you've added more for me to consider. Thank you Ashley!
