Christine McIntyre shows us that not only is she an excellent singer, but she can do funny, too.

My dad and I loved this scene. We used to re-enact it all the time when I was kid. Lost him just over seven months ago, God rest his soul.

In one of the books on the Stooges, Emil Sitka said that when Christine knocked Shemp thru the door, that was probably one of the best timed stunts they ever pulled off in the entire run of the Stooges. Flawless.

Ed Bernds, who directed this short, recounted often how he encouraged Christine to really "let him have it" with those slaps. Being a lady, of course, she was reluctant to do so, but she finally let loose. The quick edit allowed stunt-double Johnny Kascier to "fill in" for Shemp in the split-second crash out of the door. (Kascier is the same guy who played the incredulous bell-boy/waiter in the scene). LR

@@HassoBenSoba Shemp pleaded with Christine to let him have it because after five takes of half hearted attempts he said, "a lot of half hearted slaps hurt more than one good one." She hugged him after and he said, "I told you to cut loose and you sure as hell did." I love shemp more now than I did as a kid for sure.

Shemp never said that he was Cousin Basil, especially he wasn't trying to pretend to be Cousin Basil in the first place. That woman just immediately mistaken Shemp for Cousin Basil and immediately start accusing him for impersonating Cousin Basil after the real Cousin Basil phoned up.

this is missing a cut: after the slapping begins, Larry says to Moe "boy, the kisses are gettin' louder..." kind of the punch line of the scene, too. without it it's not nearly as funny.

Christine wasn't Jewish, and she was a lady; it was not her nature to go around belting people. I could have done this to a boy who whacked me with a tennis racket some 50 years ago; I told him if he ever did it again I'd get the law on him and his sister. He knocked an ink pen out of my hand once; I balled up my fist and let him have it. I could have cared less about getting expelled from school for fighting; I didn't want to go anyway

Christine was actually a nice, proper Catholic girl of mainly Scottish-Canadian and French-Canadian descent. And she actually did have a cousin Basil in Ontario. I wonder if she suggested that name for the script; Ed Bernds was known for giving his actors some flexibility in their roles.
