I dunno man. That saddle horn is sticking up right there... Not flopping, not pressed against the pommel... When I'm in a storm I ain't scrambling around trying to grab a scrap of leather. Maybe they get a hold before they let the house go and the action begins... Which I try to avoid at all costs

People didn't understand why I was obsessive about having my saddle bags at all times. Until... Someone fell off and needed a first aid kit, pliers and wire to fix fences/gear, etc., leather for a busted saddle rig, a fire starter kit, extra socks and the like. And, like you, I had mountain/trip bags that were bigger with some wool clothing, a tarp, light pack stove for inclimate weather/restricted fire zones, etc. incase I had to stay unexpectedly, needed to change out what was on my body, etc., etc.. One thing I learned thr hard way, when I was on a rookie horse and/or rough terrain, I had a small bag of basic survival gear that would normally be in the saddlebags (fire, first aid, tourniquet, life straw, length of cordage, etc.) tied to the saddle with a trucker's hitch and the other end of the rope latched to me with a "dog leash hook" that I hooked on when I got in the saddle. If the horse spooked, I fell off or whatever, the rope pulled tight, freeing the bag of gear and it *stayed with me.* The first time I got stranded in the back country by a rookie horse who spooked, dumped me and took off with all my gear to leave me 'til the next day (he got hungry and scared and came back to find me 😆), I learned my lesson. 😉

Please, don't let your fear prevent you from the amazing relationship you can have with a horse. Find a riding stable that will not only teach you to ride, but truly handle the horse. I am glad to see others having a strap, I am the only person I know that keeps one on my saddle, though that is mostly because it is the saddle I use to test out new horses, I have never carried a rope on my saddle, but I have tested my horse enough to know he is used to one being swung off of him, and I am also the only person I know that regularly uses saddlebags (though mine are a bit bigger than those, in part because I sometimes use my horse to go to the store).

I was a mounted policeman in Toronto for 37 years and rode every day. We used British designed “universal” saddles. They do not have any horn of ant kind. A large piece of leather forms the seat slung between the cantle and pomel frames. If our horse is startled and begins acting up in traffic or when out in a field it’s your legs that you hold on with not some sissy strap. In all those years the horses I rode only took off on me 3 times and I never came off, while trying to get control again. It is somewhat unnerving to be galloping up a street to a tee intersection with large trucks driving across the road ahead and your horse out of control. I was not bucked out of the saddle but I did bail out, just to find my horse coming to a halt almost immediately and walking back to pick me up. 1976.
