It’s called clipless because back in the days there were straps over the pedal that were tightened with a clip over your feet. So because we got rid of that it is called clipless.
@gpearce11

That is the reason, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still just a different way to clip onto pedals and should still be called clip-in pedals. Alas, they've been called clipless too long at this point, so we're stuck with the inaccurate name.

The mullet isn't "small up front big in back". It's "business up front and party in the back", which is pretty much still accomplished with a mou tain bike Mullet. Larger wheel for the for the contact patch and helping with Terrain, that's business for a mountain bike. Smaller wheels are more responsive and lighter, the party so to speak. So it's still what it's supposed to be.

All I run on my road bikes are continental gator skin hardshells. They’re almost seventy dollars a piece but they have Kevlar woven in them and you will not get a flat tire until the very end of the tires lives, they last about 3000 miles. So I can put a set of tires on and it will last about three months until I have to get a new one. If you rotate them once every couple weeks it will lengthen the lifetime. If you don’t ride much, they’ll last you a full year and the some. For someone like me or anyone else who rides to the point of obsession they’re perfect for them. I’ve tried multiple other tires and haven’t had the same experience.

Mullets in MTB make sense because oversteer is inconvenient at worst and understeer is horrifyng at best, therefore the front wheel is the grippy one, that's also why the front wheel is either the same width or larger than the rear. The reason clipless pedals are called that is because there used to be clips on the pedals and the system has since changed from whatever year it was, regular pedals are just flat pedals.
