i used to have the confidence to just draw what i wanted without thinking about how i didn’t really have the skills to do so. i’m finally trying to push myself again

We do grow and change as artists and people. At 59 my motivations for art are completely different than when I was in my 20s and 30s. Sometimes that change is good and sometimes it's not so great... We just have to do our best to guide it in the direction that we want to go.

I think it is stress that makes us self-talk in a negative way... I have found writing down my thoughts and talking kind to myself helps 😊 positive affirmation ❤️

I get so excited whenever I see one of your videos come out. You are one of the people who have inspired me to get into art. I always felt like once I was over 20....is too late. But you know what? Starting at 26 is better than never starting at all. So thank you so much for inspiring me. And thank you for always creating such beautiful things! You are a treasure and so is your art.

I just started learning to draw (and later paint a bit) last year when I was 55. So yeah, at 26 you have PLENTY of time. :D

I've experienced something similar to what you're talking about. I got this idea in my head that I was this skilled artist and not being able to do something I thought I would be really got me down and question my validity as an artist. I've since learned that having to learn something doesn't invalidate that skills that I did have and it didn't take away from what I already had. It's nice to give props to yourself. I'm glad that you're making a point to do that. This piece is actually beautiful!!! I know when you break through to that next level that you're yearning for it's going to be truly incredible. Thanks for your honest and practical reflections.

I related so much to the whole not reading anymore thing. I used to read constantly, and I have so many books but I never have the time anymore because reading a book takes your full attention. So audible has been a godsend for me lol, cause it can be going in the background and you don’t have to look at anything, you can be drawing or driving or working. I highly recommend the Inheritance Cycle series, the first book is called Eragon, cause I know you like fantasy. It’s one of my favorite series, I’m relistening to it rn actually haha

I honestly feel like that need to actually step back and realize accomplishment is something I need in every aspect of my life. A part of getting older, for some reason, is thinking that you should know things and you get disappointed when you don't. It's so silly. Students for life!

The thing you say about stories is so so true. Ever since seeing the Rise Of Skywalker I’ve been making art every day. It started as SW art but has morphed into art about a lot of different things. Art and media/stories is so interwoven. As a person studying to be an English teacher it feels so good to feel this way after years of feeling meh about everything. And it feels amazing to be creating again and to be excited about it.

I know this video is kinda old but you were talking about books and your art kind of reminds me of the series the raven cycle at times, you should look into it if you're still interested in reading more! It's my fav of all time, the way the author writes is just gorgeous.

I always enjoy how intuitive you are with your artwork, and how you set goals for yourself! I used to just draw. Whether or not I thought I was able to. Now I sketch an idea in pencil, and I think “now I need to practice hands, or flowers etc. so I can go back and finish that piece.” I’ve been trying to break myself of that, and just use my supplies and finish things-instead of letting all these ideas hang over me.

Beautiful piece. I would love to see what your imagination would do with Robin Hobb's books. The Assassin's Apprentice is the first book in the Farseer trilogy.

@Danica Sills If you've not read them, you might enjoy the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The 1st book is called, "Wizard's First Rule". (Now that I think about it, there is a character called Nicci who is a sorceress, & I realize I've pretty much pictured her as looking somewhat like you. 😉)

How did I miss this video??? Speaking of challenges, though, I'd REALLY love to see you play with perspective within the human figure! I personally find that a struggle.

As always, this is stunning. If you are looking for a good fantasy book I just finished The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco and I was so hooked. I think that it's style will go with your art beautifully.

Truly remarkable. Love the emotion in your character. Kind of reminds me of that skeleton from The Last Unicorn. The way the position of the arm with him holding the bottle. Love the colors you chose as well. 🙂😄😊💖

Love the colour palette and that arm! Hope you can reconnect to your dreams and find more dynamism for your pictures. I feel it's really a end-20s/30s thing to take stock of those first years of chasing professional life and finding that we put to much pressure on ourselves and leaving too little room for growth.

Love this piece and the colours and EVERYTHING. You really have grown so much as an artist from my perspective. I love your work more and more. Some ideas: Look back at work from a year ago, maybe start journaling your challenges briefly so you can see your progress. Maybe try audio books while you're working? Work on multiple pieces to keep from mindlessly rushing through a piece. Change subject completely so you don't default to old methods. Like animals, or botanicals or landscapes with no figure. Be kind to yourself because you're not a hormone changed teen any more and you have to work for a living. It isn't easy. And while you don't have the highs from drawing a really good eyeball or whatever, hopefully you don't have those dark depths where drawing a bad nose can make you feel like your life is over and you can never be an artist. Love your work.

I would like to see you paint more across and around the image and not so, finish the one detail and then go to the next one. And another thing. In this piece the shadows and light aren't consistent. Not the direction or the temperature. Your shadows are warm in some places and cool in others. I make that same mistake all the time. But I always love your pictures,images,ideas... Good job!
