3-6 months? I've only had my tank for 5 days and I'm getting my snake on the one week anniversary. I already have everything set up, two hides, a water bowl, a climbing stick, a fake plant, and about an inch of aspen snake bedding. Could use some more stuff to climb on, but I already have the basics down. Perfect temperatures as well. Averaging the early-mid 70s in the cool size and the mid-late 80s in the warm side, and between 50-60% humidity consistently.

Would it be an issue if the enclosure I got was adult sized, but the snake isn't an adult?
@AlexsAgamids
9 ай бұрын
That may be problematic due to how well small corn snakes are at escaping. If you plan to buy the adult enclosure right away. Maybe raise the baby in a tub/tote style setup until it’s “big enough” to nit escape from potential small gaps in the enclosure.

All good advice. Do you have any tips for a 4 month old baby corn snake that just refuses to eat? I have had her for about 2 months, and I've only been able to get her to eat 4 times. I have tried braining the pinky, par-boiling, moved her to a smaller tub and added more hides, I even moved her to the walk in closet which is the quietest room in the house. Temps and humidity stay good, I have kept 3 corn snakes and a ball python for years but never had this issue.
@AlexsAgamids

For now I’d say stick with the small tub in a low traffic area. It seems to me that when the snake didn’t eat, you began to change things around rapidly, which induced more stress. Stick with what you are currently maintaining the corn snake in and leave it be for a week. Then one day before offering food. Remove the water bowl, making the snake “slightly thirsty” is a trick breeders have uses to get them to consume food. Give it a try! I wish the best for you and your snake.

Thanks for the tips! I'm researching corn snakes as a potential first reptile pet and I have a question if you have time to answer it: Is there any reason to not get an enclosure that's fairly tall? I've noticed in my research on here that people tend to have enclosures that are about 2 feet tall, but I'm wondering if this is just because that's cheaper than a larger enclosure or if there are reasons relevant to the snake's health/comfort to keep it around 2 feet tall. I'm interested in scaping and planted tanks, and I'm picturing something that's, say, 4x2x4, with some vertically oriented driftwood and vining plants, but I don't want to consider it if it'll be bad for the snake.
@AlexsAgamids
11 ай бұрын
4’x2’x4’ would be a perfect size! Most people go shorter so it is easier for the snake to bask under heat lamps from the ground level. However, if you have a 4’ tall cage. Just add a heat pad so the snake has a terrestrial heating option as well as an arboreal one.

Generally snakes maintained in larger pet shops are not always in the best condition as far as care goes. So you could possibly be paying for a sick snake that isn't too well off. It may be easier to wait till the spring/summer and order a corn snake from a breeder and have it shipped to you.

@Baise Duezcke Those snakes come from pet mills. So technically if you “save” the snake, they’re just gonna order a new one from the pet mill. (For those who don’t know what pet mills are, they’re these buildings where many animals are mass breeded and treated awfully, left to sit in tiny boxes almost all of their lives.) I reccomend not buying from big box pet stores, because the more people buy, the more pet mills will grow and get money, the less likely they are to stop.

I only use RUB’s for hatchling-subadult corn snakes. However, if you don’t have the abilities from a wooden or PVC viv. Then at the bare minimum I’d suggest a 70 litre RUB for an adult corn snake. Of course, bigger is always better!

My male corn snake was a hesitant eater before when he was newly moved in with me. I asked the old owner if he was like this usually and they said that the snake ate really good with them. I thought he was hesitant because it was mating season, but because I was new to owning a snake I wasn’t completely sure.. Ones when he didn’t want to take the mouse, I planed to starve him for about 3 weeks to see if that would make him eat after trying many other different internet recommendation that did not work. I noticed that he got a lot more active after 2 weeks without food. About five days from this point, I gave him a mouse. He took it like a champ! I’ve never seen him strike the mouse before, except for that one time he was terrified by the rat I tried to feed him (which he did not eat, angry snek🐍), and after that one time he has not been hesitant again.

@AlexsAgamids
4 ай бұрын
Worth the money for the sake of investing in the stability of your heat source(s) running and safety of your snake. I’ve heard of too many cases where a heat pad runs at full power because the “affordable” thermostats fail and thus apply full power to the heating element. I’m thankful to say I’ve had my snakes going on 13 years now and I’ve never had an issue with heating elements due to a proper thermostat. Sure I could “go cheap”, but in my opinion, it’s not worth cutting costs at the risk of loosing the animal.

For a juvenile-subadult size snake: yes. However an adult corn snake will grow to a maximum size of 90cm-150cm, so eventually you’ll need an enclosure much larger than a 75L enclosure. I’d personally suggest something along the lines of a 120cm x 60cm x 60cm for a mature adult.

I’ve just gone by the “two side” rule. If you snake forms more than an “L” in the enclosure. Then it needs to be upgraded. For example: a 10 gallon tank (most common size for neonate corn snakes) is 20”x10” in floorspace, so that’ll last a corn snake till it’s 30”. Then upgrade from there. For my adult corn snakes I use enclosures that are either 36”x24” floorspace or 48”x24” floorspace. Plenty of room to stretch and move around!
