I wasn’t able to find a mentor in my first year. I read as much as I could, watched videos, and got into my hive as often as I could justify. And I was terrible. My inspections took forever, I got stung every time, and I got in the way of my bees making progress. Now I can run through an inspection in under 10 minutes and I get stung more gardening than I do while working the hives.
Having a few self-made rules to follow has helped me tremendously. At this point they’re all on autopilot. I know HOW I’m going about my inspection, which means that I can focus on the goals of each inspection. Setting up these guardrails frees up headspace and makes hive inspections more fun.
1. Always remove a frame in order to create space. It helps you to crush fewer bees, which makes for a better experience for everyone.
2. Maintain the space you created by keeping your frames pushed tightly together. As you get closer to the center of the brood nest you're more likely to encounter the queen, so this keeps her safer and helps you to move more efficiently.
3. Replace your frames in the same position and orientation that you removes them. Rearranging the brood nest will set your colony back. My goal is to avoid slowing down the hive. If you reverse a frame with brood on it, you've rearranged the brood nest. I've had better population growth since I started paying attention to this.
