4 friends of mine and myself are planning to do the West Highland Way in early July, been preping for the trip and getting the gear I need for the trip. I am excited to do the trek.

Hi London Hiker, if you enjoyed the train journey then if you get the chance and you are ever in Fort William again then try the Jacobite Express. I think its recently been voted best train journey in the world. It runs from Fort William to Mallaig. For anyone who watched the Harry Potter films aka Hogwarts Express. Glad you enjoyed the walk and our scenery.

Hi, nice tips although I would sugest that the trail around Loch Lomand is a little more technical\ clambering rocks. I walked it a few weeks ago wild camping all the way carrying 50lbs. atb Si

Thanks for sharing. I've been watching a lot of clips on this from various people as three of us are doing the WHW in July. Preparations are well underway and most of the accommodation booked in advance, especially around Loch Lomond so we don't fall foul of the camping ban. Can I ask what weight you got your packs down to? We will be camping most of the way, although we have something more solid over our heads on nights 2, 4 and 6. We plan you carry our packs with us for the whole route. And I've got a midge net too!

Dom Haughton If you plan to do this in July then I'd recommend getting Smidge and not Avon Skin So Soft as this video is recommending. From someone who is very used to dealing with midges I can tell you that Smidge wins hands down. I don't rate the Avon stuff one bit and I've used both extensively.

just a heads up on the skin so soft by Avon, they have changed the ingredient of this product ( don't know why ) i personal haven't tried the new one as i have 2 bottles of the old one but the guys on wild camping Scotland say the new version does not work. i would suggest however taking a midge net, 2/3 pounds off eBay. hope this helps and the west highland way is a must, :)

Avon skin so soft doesn't really work any more I hear. Just wear long sleeves and buy a midgie head net off amazon for a couple quid. They fly slower than walking pace, so you won't be bothered while you're on the move

Glen Nevis campsite is just before the end of the route. We're planning to pitch our tents there, then walk the last couple of miles into Fort William, probably into the nearest pub, before returning to the campsite. Like you, we are planning Ben Nevis the day after we finish the WHW. Best wishes for a good trip.

If you are lucky to have red hair you wont be bothered with the midges , god knows why , but they never seem to be bothered .

It’s something to do with red-heads having short tempers.

agreed. I despise long introductions, and anymore than 10 seconds is too long.
