Great Video Nico, I just used the Siril-Gimp method on the Horsehead nebula and it worked great. One thing I do differently though is the stars layer. I run the image with the stars through Starnett to get a starless version. I then bring it in as a layer above the stars layer. I then used the “Subtract” mode on the starless layer to get a stars only layer. I make a new layer from visible and then erase the stars and starless layers. I change the stars layers to screen and voila, a stars only layer that can be reduced by playing with the opacity.

@@NebulaPhotos do you have any thoughts to share on Automatic BE versus Dynamic?
@NebulaPhotos
11 ай бұрын
Yes, with an image like this one (wide field, lots of nebulosity) I’d probably start with ABE and only use DBE if needed. I wouldn’t use the defaults in ABE for a photo like this one. The most important thing is to change the function degree from 4 to 2 so that the background model doesn’t overfit. A function degree of 2 or even 1 will create a nice smooth background model which is usually what we want when dealing with fairly linear gradients. But I’d likely also increase the sample size and spacing (30:30 over the defaults of 10:10?), and I like starting with a ‘Division’ extraction rather than the standard ‘Subtraction’ which is only necessary for tough cases.
@rickwilliamsphotography

One more question, if I might.........no color calibration used? Spectrophotometric Color Calibration?
@NebulaPhotos

I don’t use color calibration when I shoot with a narrowband filter(s) because I know that I’m going to alter the colors to my taste anyways. I know that they have a ‘narrowband’ routine in there, but it’s not for me. I do use photometric or spectrophotometric calibration when I shoot broadband (OSC or LRGB).

They use some fancy math (see the note mid-way down this page): siril.readthedocs.io/en/latest/processing/extraction.html I often just use the green channel too, but I do think Siril's way of doing it is likely superior. Of course, it may depend on light pollution level, so testing is great idea!

Tip: Have your photography equipment set up September 14th by 5:30am and pointed to 71° azimuth. Have a tracker that can follow horizontally north to south at the Earth's current rotation speed for that along the horizon. Not sure how that works but you do. You might get the shot of a lifetime of a bizarre phenomena that I witnessed the morning after Leonard passed between the earth and sun and right before the sun rose. From our perspective p/1 will appear to travel horizontally toward the sun. Nobody believed me when I told them what I witnessed but it makes sense because the tail flips (from our perspective) and the Earth's rotation makes it appear as though it's travelling north to south and rising at the same time until the sun rises and dims it out. It is indeed a strange sight! You have better equipment than I but I will try to catch it if it's clear north of Chicago. Heads up!!

It's normal for the photo to start black out of DSS/Siril (24:50). My guess is you are not stretching it enough to see what you've captured. In photoshop, just repeatedly use 'Levels' moving the middle slider to the left until you see something. Check out my start to finish tutorials for more detail on some of this. If you are sucessfully stacking that suggests you are in-focus enough for the stacking software to find stars, so my guess is you just need to work on stretching. Another idea: in Siril open histogramTransformation, click the autostretch button, click apply. What does it look like?

@@christopherpsaros766 Are you sure you were centered on the targets? try uploading a photo (screenshot is fine) of your stretched data to nova.astrometry.net to check. If you are on target, and are really seeing nothing in 90 minutes, maybe there is something wrong with your calibration. If you can't figure it out, send me an email: nicocarver at gmail dot com

Best to start stretching at the end, same with stars.

Ok Nico how do you get this to show up as a process? When I looked at Bill's explanation and downloaded it for myself it came up as a pixelmath script. I really want to have the dropdowns and sliders and the preview that you are using but I am not sure how to load it. If you are going to show some thing like this off that is not a default feature please give at least a brief blurb on how to load it either in the video or in the description.

Sorry, meant to show in the video, and it slipped my mind. Below are instructions. I'll add to the video description too. 1. Go to Resources -> Updates-> Manage Repositories... add this link: www.cosmicphotons.com/pi-modules/narrowbandnormalization/ 2. Go to Resources -> Updates-> Check for updates... and check for updates. 3. Restart PixInsight and it will now show up under the Processes menu

would the process be similar in Affinity photo as you describe for Photoshop? could you use Siril for the stack and script to assign color channels then do all other color processing in Affinity? thx in advance
@NebulaPhotos
Жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely. My process in Photoshop/GIMP/Affinity Photo is the same. The only thing that changes is the UI and terminology. If you have any issue translating PS to Affinity, let me know. I do have it, just don’t use it since I’m too used to Photoshop.

Hey Nico, i have an off topic question...so, what is the thing called, the rings with the mount that you put a telescope/camera lens, in to mount it to the tracker?
@NebulaPhotos
Жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are asking. The rings are typically called rings. The rings attach to a ‘dovetail plate’ which is clamped by the dovetail saddle of the mount.

@@NebulaPhotos ah, ok. Thank you! I just needed the names of the individual parts. So for example, I recently purchased a little 70mm MAK. Nothing spectacular, but i have been able to see great images of saturn and jupiter. I would like to put it on my SA 2i, but the "dovetail plate" that it came with is about 3 inches long....and thats being generous. So based on what you said, I need a dovetail plate and rings. So, I assume that i get rings based on the exterior diameter, right?

How is your unlinked strech in Pixinsight not green when using an OSC camera? This is always the case for me and I thought this was normal.
@NebulaPhotos
11 ай бұрын
It is the linked stretch (default) that is green. An unlinked stretch should show normal colors because you are allowing the autostretch to color balance - apply different amounts of stretch to the red, green and blue channels to normalize them. Open screen transfer function and make sure the link icon is not active, then reset your autostretch and stretch again and the green should be gone.

Pixinsight > Photoshop > Gimp Pixinsight has so much flexibility. By the way, O3 real color should be greenish. 500nm is exactly that. In biology, 488nm on confocal microscope laser is assigned to green.
@NebulaPhotos

Yes, I know, but aesthetically red+green looks really ugly IMO. And since narrowband processing already messes with color balance, I don’t mind changing the colors to taste. If you want to stick to ‘true-ish’ color this whole scene would look just red because the OIII is too weak a signal.

Anyone know a good place to buy a Dual Narrowband Filter for a 58mm lens
@NebulaPhotos
Жыл бұрын
You have two options: 1. clip-in filter like the optolong l-enhance clip-in if you use a Canon crop sensor body. 2. use step-down rings with a 48mm filter like the Svbony SV220 (tinyurl.com/svbony220) I used for these images. From 58mm to 48mm, the vignetting won't be too bad, just a little crop.

Hi, I have seen the narrowband processing for nebulae, and I am currently looking for a topic for my doctoral research where I can apply "Deep Learning." This field of astrophotography is quite appealing to me. Would it be possible for us to have a conversation, and you could explain to me from your experience the potential areas in which AI can assist in astrophotography?
