Disagree. Mow first, edge, trim, blow. Only weed eat first if the grass is super tall. Only counter clockwise if lawn is bad . Inefficient to trim thick grass with a weed eater that the mower can do.How is walking backwards counter clockwise faster than clockwise
@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power

To answer your question, counterclockwise kicks trimmings into the lawn, instead of outward against fences, houses, vehicles, into pools. Also, why would you have to walk backward doing counterclockwise? 95% of the time I walk forward flat trimming and edging, no matter the direction.
@ericmaedgen2352

Dont walk backwards, lol. He also did mention that trim first for tall lawns so the mower can mulch up the clippings. Spring time, all lawns are tall. I agree with you that mowing first "can" be done if lawn isn't tall. Appearances.

I also trim in one continuous line, but I start at the front left of the property ( lower left of the drawing), from back when I ran crews, and then when I had helpers in my own business; that way while someone is mowing, and another one or two are trimming, the front paved areas will already have been trimmed and ready to be blown off for the first person who was finished ( usually whomever was on the mower ). I also mow first, unless it's a new property, or the grass is high. One of the main reasons being the mower sets the height at which I trim, and it's a little easier to blend and feather the trimming to match the cut height instead of the opposite.

You’re trimming wrong, you either need to start in the fence on the left side or start trimming the sidewalk first on the right. You will be walking backwards with the trimmer if you start in the fence on the right and when you get to the sidewalk on the left side of the house you will be edging standing in the grass instead of being on the sidewalk walking forward with the trimmer.

@jeremyjackson4003

And you cant go in a continous line always, the fence and house may be 50 yards apart and their may be 10 trees or shrubs in the yard to also weedeat around, so if you go around the whole fence first then the house and back to starting point you then have to walk back around whole yard and get any trees or anything else. Makes more sense to complete weedeating in sections when possible, unless its a clean yard like he drew on the board, but id stil go the other direction on some of it, if the house and fence are close enough toegether i can finish it extremely fast without having to make two trips around the whole house while im weedeating.
@Carlosson45
3 жыл бұрын
Starting point is correct I don’t agree counter clockwise, start side walks edging, the clock wise around the house then the fence because either way you have to blow around the house regardless, and if you’re a good weed whacker there’s ways around not getting clippings inside beds, either way I’ve never had anything said for clippings on top of the lawn it just blends in it’s not that serious but that’s how I do things

I have an extra loop of line taped to the darwins bar. No matter who grabs the trimmer, they have extra. I refill all supplies when we get back to the shop. Btw, if you have a curved shaft trimmer (no gearbox) it turns CW. Now you need to trim the opposite direction.

I mow my lawn first, then edge, trim then blow. I’m in the south with St. Augustine grass that I cut at 3 1/2 inches with a mulching blade. If I were to stick edge first, then my crisp edge lines would get flattened down with wheel marks. Any clippings left on the side walk, get blown back in and not even noticeable. I also cut at minimum once a week, often times, every four days.

Totally disagree mow first, when you mow first you can get closer to the edges or flower bed yours talking about, less trimming less time, if you trim first your cutting unnecessary grass the full width of the string in a circle, and if you do get close enough with mower there should be barely any clippings to notice when trimming
@youcancallmechang

Mow, trim, blow. Mow first to set grass height which will leave less guess work for where to trim and how much. Trim second. If you mow properly there shouldn't be much and I believe it makes the edging look better. I believe this is because there is less chance your mower tires will lay grass back down over the edge you previously trimmed and causing you to go back and hit it again anyways. I also walk backwards when I trim. Why? Because typically where I live in Ohio we use side discharge. Being that you want to throw the clippings away from objects you're mowing against, this means the tires on the mowers lay down the grass one direction and by walking backwards when you trim it stands the grass up and lessens the chance for stragglers. Just my opinion though.

I'm sorry but I like to edge concrete walks and driveways first and then mow to get any snakes out off the lawns along with any other animals and then I can see where the mower couldn't get to and then trim those areas down to the same height that I just mowed going clockwise. Then I blow it all off and do a last walk around before leaving the property. I'm a solo guy so I do each step. I park my truck on the front right corner of the property and end back there too! I tried to weed trim counter clockwise but it felt like it lifted the grass blades back up and made them stick up after I just mowed. When you mow and outline the property you go clockwise so the discharge chute is pointing and blowing all the clippings into the center before running your stripes. I usually do two perimeter passes to also allow my mower enough room to turn. Whatever works best for the individual that makes it go smoothly for them. I feel going counter clockwise is like if you comb your hair in one direction and then take your finger or trimmer and go back the opposite direction it stands the grass blades up and it looks bad. Just my thoughts from trying out both ways. Great topic though!

I know it's part of what you do and is the best look. it's just to time intensive..I do find that doing the perimeter helps tho it saves time insuring that they get everything the next time because you know how far out to go and so on.. I also find that it help save time on the first mow also given you dont actually know how close you can get until you try .. alot of the lawns I mow are big and not flat so there is always spots you cant go with a stander or ride on... great videos always good to sit and watch it down right

mow first than trim..first off when you mow first you can mow tight and when you trim there should only be a little to trim and also can get what the mower cant get, sometimes when you trim first you may miss anything the mower misses...so than what happens, you gotta waste time to go get the trimmer and trim spots again. also if you trim first, you have done the edges and than the mower goes over those crisp edges. to tell anyone that mowing first is wrong and dont do it is wrong...you wouldnt like it if people tell you that trimming first is wrong and dont do it....to each their own, people will do whatever works for them. i just dont get these guys who have these classes or seminars that people pay for to learn how to do this....if you dont know how to do this and pay someone to explain this stuff to you than you shouldnt own a business

im going to disagree. Trimming counter clockwise, in my opinion, is going against the grain. Another reason to trim first; trim the areas your mower doesn’t get to. I always trim while taking into account the turning radius of the mower. Why spend time trying to get a small spot with your mower?
@brandonfeland4723
3 жыл бұрын
Trim the perimeter, cut in your corners by scything the trimmer. (taking into account for turning the mower.) I also like to border 2 stripes in with the mower, before mowing wherever, for the same reason. (taking account for the extension of the handle of the push mower, that way, when you turn it around, your less likely to get caught up on thorny bushes and whatnot. (we have a lot of properties with blackberries, and rose bushes, etc. up here in BC.)) First time property should be bagged, regardless. Giving you a clean slate surface for recurring services. After that, could choose to bag, or mulch. Mulch will help feed the nutes back in, and (on a recurring service), clippings will be small enough that you don't have to worry about weather or not their going to decompose.. 👍

Working faster in +100 deg. F temps here in central Florida is not recommended. I work slower not faster as the heat in the day increases. You can die from hyperthermia in dozens of different ways affecting the internal organs: brain damage, respiratory failure, heart/liver/kidney failure, and intestine/pancreas damage. I routinely see commercial companies with their workers on the side of the local highway medians slowing roasting to death and pushing themselves beyond the human capacity to withstand. The urban heat island effect amplifies temperatures greater than what you would feel on the turf and near the shade of trees. You're not being very efficient when you find your helper is passed out under a shade tree because he/she can't handle the intense afternoon temps. Statistically, non-Hispanic whites tend to have the highest number of heat-related deaths, followed by Hispanic whites and non-Hispanic blacks account for the majority of heat-related mortalities, with approximately two thirds (70%) of all heat-related deaths occurring in males. Below is one sample data set I recently logged of outside humidity/temps in my backyard, no shade: 6/8/2021 6pm 35.64% @ 101.4° F 6/8/2021 4pm 38.6% @ 100.8° F 6/8/2021 2pm 34.19% @ 104.5° F 6/8/2021 12pm 45.78% @ 96.6° F Between 2-6pm tends to be your danger points in my zone, but even your own local conditions will vary widely throughout the day.

I've read a lot of these comments. I guess I'm gonna be the odd man out. I've been doing lawn care for 22 years and what you're saying makes perfect sense theoretically BUT, what about obstacles such as shrubs, trees, rock features along the fence etc...? Continuous walking/trimming isn't an option. You have to slow down and in some cases, STOP to ensure a quality trim job. Also, what about flower beds around the home? You can't trim and edge at the same time. You have to do one, then come back and do the other. What about obstacles such as trees, flowerbeds and decor in the middle of the lawn? Those have to be trimmed and edged as well. My point is, there IS NO MAGIC FORMULA when it comes to string trimming. EVERY job has it's on challenges. Start where you can and do the best job you can. Time can be saved in other ways such as making sure all equipment fuel tanks are full at the start of the day. Make sure you have sharp blades. That saves MEGA time. Discharge clippings away from concrete surfaces. That saves time with blower clean up. Also, when prudent, use your mower as a blower. It's faster than walking. Good content but the practicality of the info is flawed because, as I said, every job is different and has it's own challenges. God Speed.....

This may be a demographically based message. It can be confusing for the Florida companies, and especially different when you run 3-4 man crews , doing 3-4 properties at a time. But definitely some good insight , find the best formulas for property types , and find a continuous movement. Different demographics call for different details plus size of properties, size of crews, type of equipment and many other variables, but I’m sure there is places where these principles apply. For us, in SW Florida, and for us specifically with our team, we find it’s best for 3 man crews for residential, 1/4-1/2 acre lawns, typically two men trimming, one man mowing, first to finish start blowing, Avg. lawn service 7-12 min, 4-7 lawns an hour depending on proximity. But we have principles we stick to and adjustable formulas per property. But he’s right, proper preparation, uniformed movements, and consistent strategies utilized. Keep dropping knowledge. We love it down here! Thanks

Idk I live in Michigan and a friend born and raised in Florida came here where the grass is way thicker longer wetter he adapted well to the grass and was almost the best trimmer I had ever seen or heard of in my 29yrs of cutting but his lightning speed came from this method of trimming that he learned in Florida but no one tought him this he figured it out working for big commercial companies I think he said Brightview or something like that.

Yea this is best for 1 man doing a basic pushmow small yard, not the most efficient for a multiple person crew.

When erasing the White Board, always erase top to bottom in a left to right motion if you are right handed,..... right to left if left handed. Then stand back and look to see if you missed a spot. Insure that your eraser is clean before your writing task, even if you are not planning on erasing for a long while.... why you ask, well what if you make a mistake..... you will be ready to erase with a clean eraser. You may wish to have an extra eraser ... a clean one, of course. So, what have we learned.... erase the White Board efficiently, effectively and with confidence.

Great video, thanks for the tips. I time myself from start to finish from the moment I start my trimmer until I shut off the blower. If I'm 15-30 minutes off, reexamine my procedure and see what did I do different. was it a double cut or did I forget a spot. Did I have problems with the equipment ect. It makes a big difference 5-10 here or there. Thanks

They way I do it. MOW > TRIM/EDGE > BLOW > RE-MOW. The last mow is a few seconds to catch any clippings. I do this because the St. Augustine needs to be mowed 3”+. This means if I edge first and then mow over it, that pushes the grass through the edge and makes it look bad. I’ve got to sacrifice for a crispy edge.

I don’t agree with trimming first, I’ve always cut-trim-blow makes more sense, unless it’s overgrown then the grass clippings are noticeable. If you’re cutting a lawn weekly & then trim once you blow the hard surfaces off you can’t see any grass clippings sitting on top of the lawn. Bi-weekly more understandable, but imo you’re wasting more time to allow your employee to trim the area before you start cutting. If you’re working alone sure you can get away with it because you already know where the mower can & can’t reach

mowing first, esp on a new lawn, is sometimes more efficient because you can see where the mower can and can't get to.. just my opinion

I'm on my own now but the boss would park on the left side of the properties to start mowing and I would hike it. No More. I've been on the far side, run out of gas. Hike to the truck, refuel. Get back to the far side and run out of trimmer string...

Very well put, by far the most efficient way to run a whip!! Exactly how I did it 15 years in buisness. I ran 3 man crew 2 cutters 1 whip man.. "usually me the foreman alot easier for me to stop with the smallest piece of equipment in case of quick chat with our client or potential client." 1st cutter done spent time weeding and cleaning up bed areas 2nd cutter done blew off.. usually reversing the whip mans direction blower pipe always against structure and boundaries.

ABSOLUTELY there is a pattern for MOST houses you will end up where you started basically,trim to the left and it looks better and keeps alot of the grass out the beds also,trim to the right seems to put more grass in the beds imo.

When i was starting doing landscaping the crew i worked with said mow first then trim so you can trim level ive been going solo for a year or so now and finally started trimming first cause yeah it definitly wastes alot of time blowing clippings around and off the yard. Jobs have been going so much more efficently and yeah i never realized that you should always go one way with the trimmer because somtimes i do get clippings in beds then i gotta lightly blow them out and it wastes alot of time thanks this video will definitly help me be more efficent 👍

good info, confirms most of my technical MO. Also as an experiment I recently switched from mowing in circles to mowing in lines, though the action of lines takes longer than circles, I keep track of where I mowed easier(not much rain lately) so with less redundant motion it is faster in the bigger picture, at least for me and most of the lawns I have been able to get so far(ie none have proper irrigation systems).

Nothing here is correct and it is absolutely not how actual landscapers teach a crew. Love most of the videos but this is just wrong. You are making a guy walk backwards and cross his legs as he goes. Right handed guys should walk forward and whack off the left side of the body, left-handers opposite but the same. Don’t walk facing your target weed, walk facing like your goal is just walking the path, comfortable is the key each guy has his groove. Don’t turn it up-sidown either,plz. . The rotation of the machine is identical whatever way you walk and rotation seems like an issue but it’s not. Honestly your way is more likely to shoot in the beds or fence. If you string trim first it’s wrong the crew needs to match the cut, Or the interval of cut is to long. Also if you like taking grass so much just blow it and use a snow shovel to pick up the big stuff. Honestly, if you had real mowers you just have the guys cut 2-3 times dropping the height each time, no more the an inch and the clippings fall down just fine. Parking is just where it goes teach the guys how to fish and you won’t be raising robots but men. whacker string when properly done should last 3 days cutting 15-20 a day, If not you’re stringing wrong. If you fill up on a law I will fire you on the spot. If you run out of gas on The law you lose stickers. Mow and end a stripe at the truck, your method has a guy carrying a can to the truck but I’m asking why? Mike I like your videos but you are great at business but you’re not an ops guy at all. Would love to chat with you but I’m not paying. Look us up maybe we can chat and I can explain and show you what we do. God knows i could use your business skills. I would love a weed whacker race as well.

Problem is, now you're walking backwards to trim. Harder to see where you're walking and what's behind you. Very easy to step in dog crap if you're walking backwards.

I'm starting opposite side up the sidewalk blowing grass into the yard. Walking up the left side of the drive blowing grass into the yard. Around the house blowing grass into the yard up the opposite side of the drive and down the other side walk if I need ill trim around that fence ending at my truck without blowing a single blade of grass anywhere but the yard......you are fired or retaught quickly fuckinb with my crew

I completely understand the trim-mow-blow thing but when you have a crew of 3 guys, 2 mowing and 1 trimming it’s more times than not going to work that way. So some areas are going to have the clippings land on top there’s really nothing you can do about it unless you have 3 guys trim a property together at the beginning which doesn’t seem very efficient to me, with my crew I have 2 guys mowing and 1 trimming and if the trimmer doesn’t finish before the mowers than whoever finishes mowing first helps the trimmer and the last mower blows off, that has seemed to be the most efficient way for my company. Also funny how when you moved on to talking about mowing, the area in which you park the truck magically moved to the other side of the driveway lol
