As a BMW driver I can confirm we can't park. Also, a neat trick to avoid car washes is to not wash your car 👍👍 Great video, as always. Love the experiment by the way 😉

Haha my next car has a real chance of being a BMW so I might need to rein in the BMW trash talk 😂 Yep, if you can't wash the car properly, don't wash it at all! Thanks! I can confirm lots of likes (this video has a crazy percentage) have next to no effect on video performance.

Definitely love these sorts of every day driving and/or maintenance tips. I’ve been looking into clutch longevity lately, such as how to better use it creeping in traffic, avoiding using it poorly. Video on that would be great if there’s enough content there

It drives me crazy when you park somewhere empty so there's no one either side of you, and then someone decides to park right next to you when there's about 20 other totally empty spaces. Just why?!
@MickDrivesCars

I should have mentioned this in the video! This is why I avoid the random groups of 10 empty spaces. Guaranteed someone will park right next to you.

It's because people are social animals: they tent to stay in groups. So, If your car is the only one in the entire parking lot you can bet your paycheck that the next user will park right next to you.

My Dad and I parked our cars in Tesco Car park in Prestatyn a few months ago. It was about 9:30PM, and the car park was pretty much empty, so we parked with one space in between us for was more space. We came out about 20 or 30 minutes later, to an even more empty car park (maybe 20 cars, so literally hundreds of empty spaces), and some brainless moron and his wife, in a Volvo S40, had decided to park in between our cars. I took a picture, even though they were sat in there still, as I just couldn't believe the stupidity. They were two rather large people too, and could've really done with some extra space to open the doors into.

Another reason I'd like to mention is that during my lessons i often did this because i could judge my park by comparing to the other cars (if they parked correctly) as I wasn't allowed to open the door and check. I quit doing it since passing but i think this could be one of the reasons people do this

When picking a parking space, there is another consideration. When I just have to park next to a car, I park on a spot where the driver's door is not facing my car. This way I'm the one that has to be careful with the door, not some random person. Yes, there might be other passengers boarding (and admittedly kids would be more prone to dooring than drivers), but I still reduce the probability as the driver is guaranteed to be there every time. Parking next to nicer cars also reduces the risk compared to parking next to shitboxes as the people are more likely to be careful.

So funny, I actually actively avoid other people's passenger sides. Logic is the driver probably owns the car and is more likely to be careful. Every door ding I've ever seen in real life has been inflicted by passengers.

Good Tips Mick, but as a copper on our Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (EPTED) Program we always advise our citizens to park in well lit areas at night, and where where are many other eyes (citizens) about. Parking your car in a corner of parking lot next to treews, shrubs, fences are all good hiding places for criminals to access your car without being seen. At home ALWAYS park your car in your garage, theives will not be attracted to your car, or will have to work harder to steal it. As well it prevents home break ins as no one will know when you are or home or not if you ALWAYS park in the garage. As well leave NOTHING at all in view in yiour car. A gym bag, shopping bags, designer name clothes- even sunglasses is all it takes to attract thieves smashing your windows. Finally when leaving your car always lock your car manually with the insaide power door lock switch. Using your remote FOB... nearby thieves can capture your signal. You can unlock your car door with your FOB upon return and if theives do steal your signal, they will have to follow you until you stop to steal your car. A friend of mine travelling in Europe in a renatal car, secured their backbacks with their Canadian passports locked in the trunk while they went about on a tourist site seeing . When they came back they were shocked their rental car trunk had been accessed and their backpacks and passports were gone. No forced entry. Police stated nearby thieves caputured their remove signal when they locked the car with the remote. Police say it happens everyday ??? yet no action taken by police. They experienced several days in delays and expenses to replace passports.

Just traded in my 2021 Audi A3 35 TFSI for a 2021 A3 40 TFSI Quattro with all options. Will pick it up in 2 weeks as it needs to be registered since it was imported from Germany. I told them to polish the bodywork as well. Both cars are the same build year and month and mine was always washed and detailed by myself and ceramic coated. You could clearly see the difference between ownership! The other car was pretty scratched up and was totally just always taken to any car wash. Such a shame! I get it; detailing takes time and effort, but with such a pricey car it's worth the time and effort and it's very rewarding!

This is it! I always say - if I don't have the time to wash the car properly, I just won't wash it. Much better to leave the car dirty for a few days than do long term damage.

I also consider whether the surrounding cars have reversed parked or not, forward facing cars are more likely to not be parallel. Additionally, are there child car seats in the vehicle next to you. To get a child in a car seat and strapped in requires a lot of room, usually meaning the door will be as wide as possible, potentially touching your car. Check the condition of said cars too. Is the paint chipped of their door edges and is the car well cared for? A clean, detailed car of any sorts is your safest bet if you must park next to someone 👍

Enjoyed this video and the ideas to protect your car when parking. Can I add one more thought to consider when parking, especially if using a more remote part of the car park...look for where the cctv cameras are and park within its range.

This is a good shout. I got the box because I have a 2nd key I was worried about and they could both fit. But with a pouch you would be protected when you go out to eat and have the car outside or similar situations... But then you have to take the key out, defeating the purpose of keyless.
