Same here..low density..thin hair. I use a net cap and pile my hair on the top of my head to keep the volume. I can't use a bonnet because I sweat and it flattens our my hair. In the morning steam refresh and add a volumizing mouse to the scalp only and use the aveda thickening tonic ...diffuse and voila..VOLUME. well as much volume as I can get lol!

This is great advice. I just recently started watching your channel and I'm really grateful for you putting out all these skills you've learned about styling and taking care of curly hair. I used to have straight hair all my life, up until age 28, which was just 5 years ago. Then it started to naturally curl itself, little by little over time. My guess is that it was due to hormonal fluctuactions because my hormones changed radically around that time, but basically I went from being approximately a 2A to a 3B, which is a big change. Since I always wanted curly hair but never got the courage to get a perm, I was delighted to receive this gift from the gods. But having grown up with straight hair I had no clue how to style my suddenly curly hair, as it also came with a change from oily to dry hair, and from thick to thin hair. Nothing about my hair is the same as it was when I grew up, except from it's color and being fine. So absolutely zero of my old hair routine steps worked anymore. There was a lot of seriously doomed trial and error. I noticed that most hair advice is for people with straight hair, or for straightening curly hair, so it's been difficult to find tricks that work for curly hair you want to keep curly. But I'm dedicated to learn how to treat my new hair type right! Even though it's an uphill battle to deal with it, I love my curls and I'm very happy to have them.

Oh my gosh, MEL honestly your a curl saviour. I'm a hairstylist and they literally skipped over textured hair in my schooling. Being bi racial and curly I was sooo disappointed. I practiced what I did learn, on multi racial hair. My family is one of diversity and we have many different curl patterns and textures. However my cutting of textured hair had been in my opinion mastered lol. The styling and care and sleeping etc I literally just had no clue what to offer up. Now I'm well rounded and full of knowledge about curly styling thanks to you!. Thanks so much to you and your seesta 🙌🏼💖.

Thank you so much for your videos. I never knew my hair was like yours because no one showed me. I washed, dried and straightened it every day. Until my youngest was born and her hair grew out did I realize what hair I had. Her and I have hair like you. I’ve struggled with her hair until I ran into your videos. Brushing her hair after washing is horrible. Tears, snotty noses and a few cuss words and 2 hours later we are done. I did buy her a silk cap but her hair mats up in two days. We just started our curly hair journey!!

Mel, I just started watching your videos a couple of days ago and I have already learned so much. I was in the Army for many years and the only concern I had about my hair was for it to fit in my head gear. I glued it, tide it wet; all the bad things you can do to your hairs, you name them, I did them. Now I am retired and want my natural curls to flow and look healthy. I thought it was impossible and thought that I would probably have to shave my head and just start all over. But watching your videos has given me new hope. I’m following your great advice and the difference is so noticeable that I have people telling me about how much prettier I look (it’s not me, it’s the hair). So, I want to thank you for dedicating the time to educate people like myself on how to treat the beautiful curly hairs that God gave us. Hopefully one day I’ll have long healthy hair like yours. I am incredibly grateful 😘😘😘

I can refresh with one of these methods on like day (2-3) after wash day. Otherwise my hair is a tangled mess at the nape of my neck. There’s really no amount of refreshing that helps it look better when it’s tangled. Lol trust me I’ve tried. But now that it’s winter I can’t be refreshing with water every morning and walking around with wet hair. Hmm, may have to try these out. Thanks Mell! 😘 love you and all your amazing advice!

Thanks for this! I’m learning from you that I need to be mindful about what my hair needs, depending on the day, rather than just use the same refresh technique every day. I swim 2x-3x per week, which really mats up and dries out my curls, even tho I use two caps. Figuring out when I need to deep condition, when I need protein, more moisture, etc., is a constant education for me, but videos like these really help!!

Rebecca if you’re talking about increasing volume, layering definitely helps, separation techniques, keratin treatments focused on the roots will give your hair more lift and strength. And thin hair doesn’t always mean that you’re unhealthy but my hair strands were thin for a while because i didn’t have enough iron intake and they’re only just coming in thick again. Also be very gentle with your hair to prevent breakage. The best way to comb hair is from the ends and working your way up.

I love you Mell! Unfortunately, I could NEVER do the steam option - that's just a frizz disaster waiting to happen for my hair. Seriously, I can step out of my house here in Miami in the morning humidity for literally 5 seconds and within that time, my hair goes from lovely curls to complete tumbleweed frizzball! I have such high-maintenance curls, it's not even funny. I have watched I don't know how many videos from both you and other curly KZitemrs and do everything suggested for my hair and I still can't get my hair to look as perfect as I'd like. I do love my curls, but I have to really work for them to look good. Plus, it doesn't help that I live in Miami - there are only two seasons here: Hot and Hotter! And it's too damn humid; I've never understood people who think the weather here is so great. It's a freaking swamp made specifically for reptiles and other creatures who thrive in the heat and humidity LOL. I also don't know how some other curlies go to having 4- and 5-day hair looking so great! I can barely go 3 days, and my 3-day hair still looks like crap compared to some others I've seen, so for me, I have to have a wash day all over again too soon. All that to say, my refresh consists of pretty much re-wetting my hair all over; like having a wash day without the shower and without the whole shampooing/no-pooing/conditioning. If I don't do that, I will never have refreshed curls as nice as yours, Mell! I always have to plan out at least a good hour and 1/2 in the morning to do my version of refresh, which is almost as time-consuming as my wash day. I wish there was a better way, but I could never get away with my curls looking that great simply with the tips you recommended. But I keep watching your videos because you're funny, awesome, real, and know your stuff! I guess I have to keep doing even more trial and error with my hair (AGAIN!) until I get this ish right!! LOL

Thank you for you great tips!! Istill have a silly doubt, I cycle to work for 30 mins everyday and somedays in Ireland can be so windy that I areiv home with very weaty hair, specially on the scalp, so would you say it is OK to shower and wash my hair with water and ad a little bit of conditioner mid ends, I usually put a little gel or mousse to style, (just one product to avoid build up), and then let it air dry for the night, or diffuse depending how late. I wash my hair with shampoo twice a week, my hair is so so fine and it's wavy, so when I arrived home its a mess, I'm recovering from hair loss due to stress, so I have very little hair, and I'm worried that by doing this, I will have more hair loss. So sorry for the silly question, probably its been asked before. Thanks again for all your funny videos, they are always so informative and useful!!! Have a great week!!

We have different curl textures , so I can’t get the same look as you do . Can you do a video on different products and what works best in different textures / patterns

Just so helpful! 😍 I just never thought that I could avoid water in my hair in winter to keep my curls fresh 😉 I would be so thankful if you could give advice about cheaper products... I don't have much money to buy hair products, I'm always in struggle with what product to buy because sometimes products are so expensive and I can just afford one or two because of the price... It's just a proposition of video, I think it can help some people here 😉😘 I know it can be hard to find cheaper products that are working but just giving one or two products we can find at a lower price would be awesome 😘

I love these videos! I am learning a lot, but I am also getting product overload. How many products do you have/use? How and where do you store them all?

S.O.S!!! I am in the military and exercise daily so my hair is not only sweaty and gross everyday, but I’m required to put it in a bun for work. I’m having trouble trying to figure out what routine is best for my hair and I’m going through trial/error. I currently use mixed chix leave-in conditioner, aveda be curly products, miss Jessie’s curl cream, eco style gel, argon oil (not all at once or necessarily in that order). I also live in Alaska where the air is very dry. Any recommendations for a routine that will help my hair retain moisture and grow longer even with all of the manipulation it goes through??? Side note: I’ve never colored my hair but I have gotten it chemically straightened (all new hair has grown out now). Love these videos! Mell and Amanda are fantastic!!!!

Thanks mell 💟 *Can anyone recommend some products that aren't that expensive?* Like what do you do when you want your hair to look good, be natural, but you have a mom that doesn't wanna buy you the products because they're "unnecessary" 💔💔💔💔
