At McGill, I was a math graduate student in the 80's. It was very hard. I intended to get my Ph. D. but after getting my M. Sc. and feeling unprepared passing the qualifiers exam, I got a job as a software developer and never returned. I am 62 now and thinking of returning to finish my Ph. D. . The big challenge would be to attempt the qualifiers exams. In 40 years, I forgot a lot of things, so probably think that I need to seriously relearn Real Analysis (Rudin) and Abstract Algebra (Jacobson). Recently, I have become more interested in neuroscience and ML. I think that I have some problems in that I have too many interests (fuzzy logic, physics, quantum physics, protein folding) and keep changing my goals. I read about a retired MD who decided to get a Ph. D. at Yale in physics at the age of 87, so maybe there is hope for me.

If you need more of an introductury book to topology, Introduction to topological manifolds by John M. Lee is really good in my opinion. Then again, I'm not sure what topics are covered in your classes, also since yours are all on a PhD level, so this might be too introductory. edit: Spelling.

I will check it out, the instructor mentioned he will follow Munkres text but he doesn't use a book when he lectures. The class has "introductory" in the title but I've been fooled before lol

@@PhDVlog777 If I may, I would suggest Loring W Tu’s Introduction to Manifolds…I’m only a freshman in undergrad, but I am taking Probability Theory with him next semester and he’s a great guy who seems to be the expert on manifolds.

@@richardmajor6712 I have this one too which is a great book on manifolds, I read it parallel to Lee's. However, it has more focus on Differential forms, Tangent spaces and de Rham theory, but I haven't finished either yet, so I could be wrong.

@@PhDVlog777 I had a quick glance over Munkres text and it seems to me that there is a solid overlap of Lee's and his covered topics, but you'll be a better judge on these things.

I am a 4th year PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology. I believe a big reason we pursue PhD is because we are lifelong learners and students. At the end, you said you would take the Fall 24 classes if you didn't get Candidacy. Did you say earlier that there's a test you have to pass to get into Candidacy, or is there some other requirement?
@PhDVlog777
26 күн бұрын
The first test you need to pass is the qualifier exam which proves to the dept that you are capable of research. The next exam is the candidacy exam which demonstrates that you have done some sort of research and no longer need to take classes so that you can fully focus on your research. After that, you finish and defend your dissertation.
