Were these domestic or wild cinder blocks? I am planning a cinder block hunt, and it appears that either would be suitable rifles. I was hoping the Win Mag would shoot through more than one black, since wild cinder blocks often travel in packs.

400 yards and closer either one will get the job done. One downside is the winmag hits the shoulder with like 30 percent more recoil. Its a fine round but there’s just something special and iconic about the .30-06. Rifles can be more convenient in 30-06 Springfield because performance can be maximized in 22- to 24-inch barrels while the bigger magnums require longer, heavier barrels of 26- to 28-inches. The lighter recoil level of the -06 also means lighter weight rifles can be carried on tough hunts involving considerable hiking and climbing.and its why its the shooters choice in more guns. Its been around for years and its not really been supplanted by anything without introducing some negatives in the process.

I know this is old -- but, experimenting with handloading tells me one thing. If you can nail the perfect velocity for a specific type of round it will penetrate. If you are moving so fast, the energy is dumped. The thing about this test is that AT DISTANCE the 300 win will most likely out-penetrate. Essentially, as long as you are within velocity limits of proper terminal performance (usually said on the box, like Nosler Accubonds at 1800 fps) the bigger cartridge allows you to push the distance. The question is always by how much?! Could be 300 yards, could be 30 yards. For hunters, you have to ask yourself - is the recoil worth it if I'm hunting XYZ distance?

They're both a .30 The 300 just has a little more energy and I mean just a little. Read ballistic recordings on both. The only big significance between the two is price. The 300 cost about a buck more per round, and a good 300 vs a good 30/06 cost about 1500 more.

I had to revisit this. I still want a 300 mag, but the 3006 has so many different loads...

@Tracy D i thought the 220 grain bullet was only in 30-06? Unless you mean reloading. Then, yes you can void the manufacturer’s warranty and do as you please.

The 300 Winchester is more powerful without a dought. I still don't agree with people who say you all sudden can't use either caliber in Africa now days on cape buffalo though. A couple good shots with either could kill cape buffalo. A lot people need to keep in mind a cape buffalo has huge heart so it not that small a target if one were to practice a lot they could hit the heart of cape buffalo or the lungs. I think a 300 Winchester mag or 30 06 would work fine In Africa. I mean I don't know how that's crazy it's not like I'm talking about bringing a 9 mm 45 acp or 40 cal which no one should bring to Africa.

Flaw in test is that the other walls in same block split as the bullet splits first wall.

The 300 looked like some big invisible guy took his battle axe & split that block RIGHT IN HALF, BOOM. They are VERY BIG, HARD & HEAVY BLOCKS, YOU DID NOT CHEAP OUT SIR WHO, VERY NICE.

If your ranges to game are not over 325 yards the Mag is not worth the recoil or expense. Just my observations in a few years of hunting.
