" All that aside, lets go back to when the .30-06 and .308 were the only cartridges allowed in NRA match rifle matches. Both cartridges were used in barrels of equal quality as well as the same action and stocks by several top shooters in the USA. Both cartridges were used in matches at ranges from 100 through 1000 yards. Many thousands of rounds were fired in both types. Bullets from 168 through 200 grains were used with several powder, case and primer combinations. In comparing accuracy between the .308 and .30-06, folks who used each quickly agreed on one thing: .308s were two to three times more accurate than the .30-06. In the early 1960s, it was also observed that competitors with lower classifications using .308s were getting higher scores than higher classified folks using .30-06s; at all ranges. By the middle to late 1960s, all the top highpower shooters and virtually all the rest had switched to the .308. The Highpower Committee had received so many complaints of ties not being able to be broke between shooters using the .308 and shooting all their shots in the tie-breaking V-ring, something had to be done to resolve this issue. In 1966, the NRA cut in half the target scoring ring dimensions. At the peak of the .30-06's use as a competition cartridge, the most accurate rifles using it would shoot groups at 200 yards of about 2 inches, at 300 of about 3 inches. The 600-yard groups were 6 to 7 inches and at 1000 yards about 16 inches. As the high-scoring ring in targets was 3 inches at 200 and 300 yards, 12 inches at 600 and 20 inches at 1000, the top scores fired would have 90+ percent of the shots inside this V-ring. Along came the 7.62mm NATO and its commercial version; the .308 Winchester. In the best rifles, 200 yard groups were about 3/4ths inch, at 300 about 1-1/2 inch. At 600 yards, groups were about 2-1/2 inch and at 1000 about 7 to 8 inches. It was not very long before the .30-06 round no longer won matches nor set any records; all it's records were broken by the .308 by a considerable margin. Some accuracy tests at 600 yards with the .308 produced test groups in the 1 to 2 inch range. These were 20 to 40 shot groups. No .30-06 has ever come close to shooting that well. At 1000 yards, where both the .30-06 and .308 were allowed in Palma matches, the .308 was the clear-cut most accurate of the two. If top shooters felt the .30-06 was a more accurate round, they would have used it - they didn't. In fact by the early 1970s, the scoring ring dimensions on the 800 - 1000 yard target were also cut in about half due to the accuracy of both the .308 Win. over the .30-06 and the .30-.338 over the .300 H&H when used in long range matches. Most top highpower shooters feel the main reason the .308 is much more accurate than the .30-06 is its shorter, fatter case promotes more uniform and gentle push on the bullet due to a higher loading density (less air space) and a more easily uniformly ignitable powder charge. Military arsenals who produced match and service ammo in both 7.62mm and 30 caliber have fired thousands of test rounds/groups with both. They also found out that with both ammo types, the smallest groups were with the 7.62 by about 50 to 60 percent. There will always be folks who claim the .30-06 is a more accurate cartridge. All I have to say to them is to properly test .308 vs. .30-06 and find out. Theory is nice to think about; facts determine the truth.

Great video always enjoy the milk jug test. Those higher velocity rounds are dumping their energy quicker so they’re not penetrating as many. Although the 3030 is slower it’s still a well underestimated round and has no trouble dropping a deer within a 200 to 300 yard range. All the deer I’ve taken with a 3030 and my 270 have all been within 300 yards for me personally I see no point in trying to harvest a deer past that range but nonetheless all those rounds are excellent deer cartridges.

@Steven Miller I agree with the to "much Velocity". I would have to watch the video again. But i think we are saying same thing. If they were using say a Nosler Partition The extra velocity provided by the 300 win mag would have penetrated more. with that said. The extra velocity accelerated the expansion that the ballistic tip provided. Leading to it not penetrating more jugs. it just broke up into to many pices.

The 30-30 penetrated more, here, because it is a slower round, almost the same sectional density.....but expanded less violently therefore was able to shed its energy at a slower rate.

The type of bullets used were hunting rounds for max expansion and deformation, that's why 30-30 had the least deformation and mushrooming, yet highest penetration, this action of mass deformation slows down the projectile. If the 300 Win Mag had been a full metal jacket and hit dead center of the jugs and not hit the boards first like it's second shot, it would have blewin through all 7 jugs.I've shot all four calibres many times and 300 Weatherby mag. beats the 300 Win mag by only 30-155 fps depending on bullet wt. and type, powder type and grains of powder loaded.

I like your videos. This one was a lot more demonstrative. People in general don't seem to realize how important bullet construction is to terminal performance. In this case, the core lokt 170 gr in the 30-30 is not only its heaviest bullet used, but the core lokt is a tougher bullet in that weight, so it penetrated deeper. The 180 gr power point used in the others is a softer bullet designed to open up on deer sized game along with larger game. The amount of velocity will determine how much expansion it will have and also shock effect. The faster the bullet goes, the more impact shock which will impede penetration, like slapping water with your hand, the harder you slap, the harder the impact on the water and the less your hand will go in, or maybe better, the quicker your hand will stop, hence reducing penetration. In the 308, bullet expansion was good noticeably more than the 30-30, and though it's hard to tell on the water jugs, more violent disruption on the jugs. The 30-06 is a bit faster, exhibited a bit more mushrooming than the 308 but only slightly more, causing very similar disruption to the jugs while adding a little more penetration. The 300 has more increase in velocity, and when pushing the same bullets, applied noticeably more shock effect, definitely more bullet mushrooming (there was almost no shank left and the core fell loose) resulting in more resistance and less penetration. So what his showed is all would work on deer sized game and the 30-30 has penetration abilities in case you wanted to use it on larger game. In the other three cartridges, the power point would work well in the 308 and 06 on deer sized game while working on larger game also, but going to a tougher bullet on larger game might not be a bad idea for more penetration. In the 300, the power point would work well on deer sized game but probably over destructive on meat, and it would be a good idea to try a tougher bullet for heavier game. I would like to see this test performed, comparing, in the 06 or 300, a 180 gr power point to a 180 gr nosler partition and also a 180 gr barnes TSX. Or else a 150 gr power point compared to a 150 gr nosler partition, and also to a 150 gr barnes in the 308. I bet the penetration would go up in that order, in both cases, power point shallowist, partition next deeper and barnes going the deepest. This is comparing all three bullets in one cartridge, not cartridge to cartridge, but the 150 gr barnes TSX in the 308, 30-06, and 300 compared could be interesting, would the tougher construction give more penetration as the velocity went up, or would the 308's much higher velocity cause enough "slap" to again restrict penetration? There you go, ideas for more videos!! I'm looking forward to them!

When I used a 30-30 exclusively (all I had lol) I used 170 grain bullets because "heavier is better"... Then I read an article in Fur-Fish-Game by Don Zutz, I believe, about people using big heavy bullets in 30-06s, 180s - 220s, for deer and having long track jobs. The rounds were pencil holing through. Then some switched to 150 grainers and deer started dropping on the spot or MUCH shorter track jobs. Well, I figured maybe it would work in the 30-30 as well. I started using 150 grain Winchesters and I can tell you I saw every deer drop after that. Even had several drop in their tracks. My ex's son dropped a big 8 that only ran 30 yards before he piled up. Never had that happen with 170s. I carry a 300 Win Mag quite a bit now because I have a very good chance at seeing a big bear when I hunt. I am using 165 Hornadys in it. I know that deer drop DRT lol. Nope to finaly get a bear this year and see how it does.

Twice in my life I have seen one shoot through one deer and kill the other behind it. I have also dispatched a full grown bull with the round. I have little doubt that it'll poke holes. 30 30 is really a better dear killer with 150 grain bullets and cheap ones at that. It has more hydrostatic shock with the lighter weights. But, that old green and yellow box, Remington 170 round nose will shoot through a house and keep on going. It's a great brush round.

Hey got it right, the other calibers were just going faster so expanded quicker than the 30-30, now the 150 Gr. 30-30 would not have done as good I don't think ? I've used the 150 Gr. bullet & the results were not as good on whitetail deer as the 170 Gr. FLAT NOSED BULLET. I also reloaded since I was about 8, stared out with the old Lee loaders doing everything by hand pretty much. I remember 1 time when seating a primer with a mallet and the supplied rod pounding it in, don't know what happened but the primer went off shooting the rod out of the case & it stuck in the ceiling which was the wooden floor above the cellar. Scared the CRAP OUT OF ME & MAN WAS IT LOUD, MY EARS RANG FOR ABOUT 15 MINS. Dad came down & yelled WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO ? He laughed when he saw the rod sticking in the floor above said he's done that a time or 2 also.

Well, I used the word "tale" because it starts with a T, just like "tell". I've been told to avoid alliterations, but that only made matters worse (or better). Making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn, because you'll *never* forget stuff like a rod stuck in the ceiling/floor.

Well I took your comment on me being still alive as you being a smart ass. Now I see I was right, people just can't watch a vid. & comment on the vid. itself. They tend to belittle other peoples comments for some reason ? Tale or story whatever it all the same to me but not smart ass comments like, and you lived to tell the tale. NO I WILL NEVER FORGET THE ROD STUCK IN THE FLOOR Thomas. Maybe you were trying to be funny ? I don't know just sick of comments similar to that all the time on youtube. Have a good one Thomas.

yes Black templar the 30-06 is good versatile caliber , you can go from 120 up to 220 grain bullets , ammunition is cheaper then a magnum like 338 or 7mm . It doesn't beat up your shoulder and every gun maker makes a 30-06 . But if I had a lot of bears around I would maybe step up to a 338 magnum , but it would kick more and be heavier to carry and ammo would cost more , but what's your life worth ? Iam thinking about getting a 375 ruger , shoot everything from bears to moose and it would anchor them in place with proper shot placement , but I wonder how much meat it damages .

I live in Alaska and my big gun is a good ol 30-06 I run 180 grain Hornady Interlock btsp at close to 2800fps. I have no problems carrying that in bear country. You see more black bear close to Anchorage than brown or grizzly. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a brown bear with it though. And you could find ammo anywhere.

i believe you can get Rem Core-Lokt (bonded) w 150 or 170 grain pill in all 30-30, .308, 30-06, and .300 winmag calibers .. make them all the same then we can see what the different velocities will do differently. make it a fair fight. and i would like to see what the 30-30 will do at 100 yards. thank you

Doesn't really matter that much. A low velocity round nose bullet is going to plow in further than a pointed higher velocity. A more accurate comparison would have been to run 180gr round nose bullets in all guns. This is mostly a study in the effect of velocity on the action of a cup and core style of bullet. Nosler Partitions, Hornady GMX, Barnes TSX bullets for example would have produced an entirely different result as would placing the water jugs at 100 or 200 yds.

The .30-30 preformed flawlessly, the bullet is tailor made for that velocity, and they did a great job of it. The 180gr. bullets in the .308 and .30/06 preformed well enough, but it's obvious the .300WM has too much velocity for that, (generic) .30 bullet. We don't buy factory ammunition, we handload everything except surplus ball ammunition and try to match the bullet to the velocity, expected range, and game being hunted. The .30-30 is one of a very few cartridges that preforms as expected with about any bullet designed for it, (no need to spend more on premium bullets).

Amazing. The number of jugs penetrated is not the entire story. The 300 win mag dumped more energy quicker. Less penetration, more destruction. I would not have believed this. If a hard solid bullet was used you would get different results. This is crazy but the bullets are designed to do that

Point blank distances show the weakness of faster rounds. Most bullet designers go for the velocity of a given caliber at 100 yards. The mid powered 30-30 you see a much smaller diameter mushroom because that bullet is designed for shorter distances. When I say design the meaning is the controlled expansion component of the bullet. The distance was never stated but the boom and the water flying was simultaneous so I'm assuming like 10 feet?
