the power of the press. if it wasn't for iihs and gov safety standards, we would still be driving around with no airbags, abs, traction control, or stability control, let alone seatbelts if the auto manufactures had their way. all of those safety features cost auto manufactures money and they are in the business of making as much money. So, we all know they wouldn't put these safety features in unless they were forced to.

If we didn't have these tests, we wouldn't even have ABS brakes as standard equipment on cars.
@josephbettano2569

We pretty much did not until 2012! Even at the start of the 2010s decade, a few car models still had ABS only as an option! For example, the Nissan Versa up to 2011 only had ABS as an option! What's crazy is ABS has been mandatory on all cars sold in the European Union since 2004! It took the US almost a decade to make ABS mandatory on all cars! Now, all cars come with ABS and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) as standard, and it's all thanks to the findings from the IIHS!

Joseph Bettano But don’t forget how long it took Europe to make airbags standard
@josephbettano2569

@@watchdogs295 Two notable examples of cars sold as late as the early 2000s in Europe without airbags are the Suzuki Baleno and Fiat Seicento
ABS doesn't have anything to do with crash tests lol ABS was designed to prevent crashes and that dates back to the 70s. ABS can also on the other hand cause you to crash if your vehicle leaves a hard road surface. ABS will not allow the wheels to lockup and build a wedge of earth in front of the tires to stop quickly. In that case, ABS can increase stopping distance significantly potentially causing a fatality.

My dad drives a 2006 TSX that was originally my aunt's (his sister's). One of the reasons she got it was because my dad would only allow his sister to get super safe vehicles (or, as I describe it, cast iron shipping containers with wheels and a bubble wrap lining). Not only is the TSX a safe car, but it's also really reliable. It has lasted multi-state road trips with zero issue.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the 2006 Toyota Camry as good in the moderate overlap front test and marginal in the head restraint and seat test. As for the side test, with the optional side airbags, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the 2006 Toyota Camry as good. Without the optional side airbags, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the 2006 Toyota Camry as poor.

The sled in the side impact doesn't represent a pickup truck or SUV. It only weighs 3,500 pounds! A Chevy Tahoe weighs 5500 pounds. A suburban even more. I don't trust IIHS for a minute. Why no rear impact crash test with the sled?

They have since changed the test to be more realistic, by increasing the speed, and changing the barrier design to act more like the front end of a real vehicle. The most recent group to be tested in the updated test is midsize cars, and only one got a Good in the new test: the Subaru Outback.
