I've been using my new 3-bin permanent composting system for about a month now. The way it is structured makes it pretty easy to work the piles. I want a lot of compost, fast, so I have focused on keeping the decomposition going as best I can. This includes flipping the pile from one bin to the next, therefore mixing the contents and aerating it at the same time. Also, I monitor the moisture level, which can be a bit tricky here in the desert.
After a month of working my compost, I'm happy to report it is working! Im amazed how quickly the materials have broken down. I have been adding as much variety to the pile as possible. Everything from shredded paper/cardboard, kitchen scraps, grass cutting, garden pruning, etc. At some point, I'll stop adding new material to this pile and start the whole process over with a new one.
I live in the Sonoran desert near Tucson, Arizona. My hardiness zone is 9a. We get extreme, dry heat from about May through October, monsoon rains in the late summer, and chilly (but mostly mild) winters.
I'm not a master gardener or expert in everything, and this isn't intended to be a gardening tutorial channel. But, I'm always curious to learn and hope you find inspiration, peaceful moments, and perhaps a bit of entertainment as you tag along.
Your likes, comment and subscribes are so appreciated as it will help my new channel grow and expand my reach to more interested viewers!
