I play the cello, so I'm not the most qualified on giving advice for viola, but I have some tips. For context, I've been playing for almost 8 years. 1. Your bow hand looks stiff. Try working on making the grip relaxed and try moving the bow with your elbow and wrist more. Try to relax your bow arm as well. 2. Try focusing on making your tone more consistent. Getting good tone consists mainly moving your bow hand steadily with the right amount of weight on the bow in relation to speed. Try experimenting with those. 3. Last but not least, try to play in tune. Whenever you think a note sounds off, try to correct it. This is probably one of the hardest things to get correct (for most people), so don't worry if it takes time. The right positions will become muscle memory at some point. I want to make it clear that I don't expect you to be able to do all of these things for a while, but I want to give objective feedback. Getting all of these things right usually takes years and it's impressive if you can improve even 1 of these for now.

Appreciate the feedback! Will definitely focus on all of this. My main focus right now while playing is to play the right notes so I think I need to go even simpler and work on technique. Thank you for giving me advice!

Buy a method book. My school uses “essential elements” and it’s not the best but it helped. Start slower too. When they teach school students how to play they don’t pick up a bow for the first 1 or 2 months

I have that book. I will go through it and learn. I was just so eager to learn some actual music I rushed through some steps. Thanks for the advice!

I appreciate you try but that’s the perfect example why self learning these kind of instruments are a terrible idea and a teacher is absolutely necessary. That bow grip and that hand position are typically for beginner and an injury waiting to happen. If you plan to continue please get a teacher

Appreciate the feedback! I was just holding the bow how it felt comfortable in my hand. Is the main reason to prevent injury? I am able to practice for an hour straight and haven't experienced any pain however when I try a more proper grip it seems easier to slip out of it causing pain. I will definitely research some more cause I don't want to injure myself. Of course getting a teacher would help me with figuring this out!

I think you should probably get a real viola, because it looks like you got that off amazon which means it probably has bad sound quality, and I think you should work more on your articulation since that affects your intonation and not just your finger placement. You should also give more curve on your pinky on your bow, and you need a straighter wrist, I recommend watching videos or getting a private teacher,

Thanks for the feedback. Definitely going to research some better technique this week and focus on that for the future. Yeah this viola is what my girlfriend played when she was in middle school about 10 years ago lol hasn't been played since but it does the job. Hoping I can get decent enough for it to sound good enough.
