It took me breaking 5 $30-50 gloves in the first 2 years of high school to convince my parents that I needed an actual glove. I was a first baseman with a shortstop throwing 88-93 across the diamond and they thought I “broke them on purpose”. Got 2 $230 heart of the hide gloves (one 1B and one IF) and I am still using them in men’s league 8 years later with just the occasional re-lace. Worth the money easily.

Bought a $300+ dollar glove when i was younger than you back in the 90’s. Used it heavily for at least 15 years and then less frequently as life got in the way of playing. Coach at my kid’s school now and “lost” it a year ago. It was shockingly emotional to the point I had tears in my eyes. It’s crazy the things you think of and the memories you have attached to an object. Looked and looked then finally broke down after a couple weeks and ordered a similar glove which was over $400 now and then promptly found the original, in a box IN MY TRUCK! Lol

My father bought me a Wilson A2000 glove in 1980. Now my son, who is 11 years old, uses that same glove. Yes the inside of the glove has worn out some over the years, but it’s still structurally sound. If you take good care of these gloves, they can last a very long time. I believe that it was around $100 back in 1980. Well worth the price in my opinion.

The $30 glove would probably be OK with a re-lace job or at least re-lace the pocket. I'm looking hard at getting a custom catchers mitt from 44 gloves for around $200 + give or take depending on how you'd like to embellish it and later a fielders glove, they have many styles and pocket designs to choose from not to mention all of the colors that you pick yourself like main color, web color, stitching, lacing etc.

The smell of the leather glove combined with the smell of freshly cut grass slightly damp from when the sprinkers that watered the infield last night. The sound of your cleats as you take your first practice swings when you dig in on opening day. This nothing better than the sounds, smells and sights of opening day, the sound of a ball hitting the sweet part of your bat when you know for sure it is leaving the park, the smell of those hot dogs that you can only get at a ballpark and the sights of the stands on opening day. Baseball the greatest sport ever, the only sport that celebrates the beginning of it's season, OPENING DAY

As a kid in the 70's I played using a cheap Spalding glove from the department store, didn't know any better and couldn't afford it if I did. I outgrew the first glove and searched all over to find one that felt right. Around that time I found a softball glove that the school my neighbor worked at was throwing away, (he brought a dozen or so gloves home and gave them to the kids on the block). I ended up with a bright red full grain leather glove that fit my hand well, I changed up the lacing a bit around the pocket and hand closure and starting using it. I used it for years, and still have it. I replaced it in high school with a pro glove an ex player gave me, (Also a neighbor at the time), I used that in Babe Ruth league in high school for a bit but ended up going back to the old softball glove. It just fit me better and I liked how it trapped the ball better. I haven't played anything more than catch or the occasion weekend game at a barbecue in 30 years, but still keep that old softball glove handy. It sits on a table in my home office. I never took to the new glove and didn't play as well with it. It fit me fine but it wasn't comfortable and the hinge crease didn't want to be where I wanted it to be. I think I later found out that the glove I liked best was a $12 model from some school sports supply house back then. I found out they were donated and the school didn't have a softball team so they sat around for a few years and got tossed. Somewhere I've got another one that never got played, one of these days I suppose it'll turn up again.

I definately see the value of a really expensive glove. I may just play reck baseball, but even in the 15-18 age group that I'm in, my $60 glove is doing just fine. It has lasted me about 4 years now and it's just fine. My only gripe would be that it got flimsy after about a year or two, so pop-ups that I a little over run will hit the tip and flip out, or some scoops will hit the bottom of the glove, and flip out. One last issue with it is that the padding is mediocre. Besides that though, the glove is fine. Overall, a $60 glove isn't bad.

Got a question for you, what about the mid-grade ones? If you don't feel like reading this whole post: we just need one that won't fall apart, is $280 necessary? I was at Dick's the other day and I saw some $80-130 range ones. We have a 70 year old mitt in the family that we may or may not be retiring soon (depends on the results of my re-lacing & sewing attempts soon). We will spend more if we have to but we don't play in leagues anymore This is more for playing catch with grandkids, nieces & nephews.

My grandpa's little league glove is still intact and he gave it to me when I was a kid. Its really broken in for being an 1930s kid.
