Visiting this site was on my bucket list, flew from Texas to UK to see Hadrians wall…just an amazing week there which will be in my memory forever. It’s really tough to watch such wanton pointless destruction of such beauty and wonder. Imagine the stories if these old growth trees could speak. So very sorry for the locals.

Spot on! That tree's been hinged and the hinge cleaned up. He'd also need wedges and a felling axe or sledge hammer to drive then in, this would be to avoid the bar being pinched. Why would a mere 'vandal' go to all that trouble in the pitch black and in the middle of storm Agnes? Something is not right with this incident.

Not the same, and it’ll be expensive, but it will go a long way toward healing peoples’ hearts worldwide. The culprit and his family can pay for the transplant of a replacement tree.

There is good news. This famous tree could be cloned using cuttings and replanted. Any seeds can also be gathered and planted out. And if the tree has enough energy it may be able to sprout new shoots. So all is not lost.
