I would date that wheel as mid nineteenth century. Your technique is good and correct. In a lot of the videos the spinner is stooping as they turn the wheel instead of keeping their back straight and grabbing another spoke. Bare feet are a sign of a serious spinner. Great video.

Nice clear video on spinning with a great wheel. I have one and I love it. Actually, I just love spinning, whether it’s on a wheel or a drop spindle, I just plain love it. I also love your dress. I’m assuming you made it. Very nice.

Hi! What a lovely wheel and you are just the cutest! I’ve recently become the new owner of a lovely Great Wheel myself. Perfect in every way however she’s missing the Mother of all and everything that connects to that. Do you happen to have any info on anyone who specializes in making these for our old beauties? Thank you so very much!

Thank you! There are a few places/ people you can reach out to for help replacing the MoA for your wheel. Bobbin Boy is the most well known craftsman for repairing/ replacing wheel parts, but often local wood turners, spindle makers, or reenactment craftspeople will take on a restoration/replacement project.

Thank you for showing this wheel. I just found one very old and similar to yours. Are the leather bearings just tied on? Thank you.

Ive had a great wheel in the basement since I was little that my mom just gave me once i took an interest in weaving, someone had painted it a dark brown but after stripping the mother of all it seems like chestnut. (My bedframe is and it seems like a dead ringer). The spindle is held on with a piece of husk cord folded into a loop and held on by string wrapped around notches turned into the maidens. I ended up denting the bench wiile working to strip it and had to drill out a couple wooden pins to disassemble it all to get the gummed up paint off of it, but im so excited for it once i strip the wheel and its support and find a spindle itll be back in working order once again, just wondering how you date the age on them? Ive never spun before but im excited to get a chance now

I would recommend reaching out to The Spinning Wheel Sleuth (www.spwhsl.com/) or check out the antique spinning wheel group on Facebook for help identifying the maker and age of your wheel. Good luck with the refinishing, I'm excited for you.
