Would have been nice to have seen the real world light output on the 902S and compared to the output of the 906S in a video that is supposed to be a review of both lights.
@TheSweetCyclists

The 902S / 906S use the same LEDs and lens design - so to decide between the two lights you just need to decide whether you need the extra 1500 lumens + USB-C battery pack. For most people the 902S should be enough - but if you do fast trail riding the extra capacity and power of the 906S is nice to have.

Yes, same here. With 15 output modes, the lights really should have a dual button interface or a mode indicator, otherwise it is really easy to get lost. The MJ-900 is much simpler though, as it has a single LED and just 5 modes.

You do some really great reviews and I really like these, but can you recommend any moderately priced lights that wouldn't blind oncoming traffic?
@TheSweetCyclists

Great question. Anything with at least a soft beam cut off is better for not blinding traffic. Lights like the Kryptonite X6 (thesweetcyclists.com/kryptonite-incite-x6-bike-headlight/), Magicshine Allty lights (thesweetcyclists.com/magicshine-allty-400-600-800-review/) or the Magicshine MJ-900S (thesweetcyclists.com/magicshine-mj-900s-review/) are great options.

The Olight RN 3500 is the same as the Monteer 3500S which we also have a full review for. The MJ and Monteer lights get hot, but I think your correct that the Monteer lights stay a bit cooler. At the higher modes the lights will get hot but as long as you're moving the output is maintained.

Could you express opinions on the MJ-906s vs MOH-55 pro as far as beam spread, light color or temp, beam pattern, a rough evaluation of output comparison (which looks brighter), and which you personally would use for tech trail riding. Thanks for the review!

Hey Terry. We unfortunately weren't able to get the MOH 55 and the MJ-90X side by side on video but they are definitely very similar. If you're trying to decide between the MOH 55 and the MJ-906S light for trail riding, I would recommend the MOH 55. My reasons would be: the MOH 55 has less modes and has a simpler user interface (the MJ-902S / MJ-906S have 15 modes!), MOH 55 has a wider and more uniform beam and the MOH 55 is more compact. That said, the DRLs on the MJ lights makes them great for daytime riding which is why I prefer them for road cycling / commuting.

These are appealing lights but my ebike is wired up with basic + and - wires for the light I have right now. How many wires are stuffed into that connector? I'm thinking I should be able to cut it off and just wire it up to my existing power and ground wires

Between this model and the MOH 55 Aquila Pro, which do you think would be a better option considering that they have the same battery (MJ-6118). I would use it for road and trail.
@TheSweetCyclists

Great question. The biggest difference between them is that the MOH 55 is more compact and lacks the DRL lights. If you're doing road cycling, I think the DRL is really useful as you can leave it on during the day without running down the battery - that's why I'd say the MJ-906S or MJ-902S are better options.

Thanks for the good review a bit more eval vs other lights at the claimed lumens would be nice. I have used the Mj902 for years on my acoustic bikes after years with many other such as Light and Motion, my own builds, etc. That said their step down to various voltage MJ-902S and MJ-906S versions suck. For instance, you have to switch them to the Ebike mode the first time, then the circuits have too much resistance at the lowest voltage 6v. So, claimed lumens for the range of 6-12v is way off and you are better off just getting a light with the battery on cable for mtb and on the head for road. For instance, I installed the Ebike Mj906s on my Yama 6v input circuit and got about 400 lumens (light is claimed ~900/1800/2800 lumens for 6v mode.....) yea no. About 300lm is all you get on brightest setting. As said x2, their acoustic lights with the battery are excellent for Mtb. Overkill on the road with the tech now to just get a light and battery all in one. So, be careful and buy them with Amaz prime as backup if you are buying their ebike lights so you can return. You really need a 12v system like their batteries to power the ebike lights. Something like this for the road would be fine. (Yea, it says mountain....really look at the total URL lol.) magicshine.com/collections/mountain-bike-lights/products/allty-1500-road-bike-light Or something with Amaz prime so if it sucks you can return it www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Headlight-Digital-Display-Bicycles/dp/B08THG5JDP/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=1500%2Blumen%2Bbike%2Blight&qid=1661691057&s=sporting-goods&sprefix=1500%2Bbike%2Blight%2B%2Csporting%2C145&sr=1-8&th=1#customerReviews

Thanks! We don't have the proper equipment to measure actual lumen output but would expect most lights to drop output at higher modes due to heat. That's disappointing to hear your E-Bike experience wasn't positive, maybe you received a bad product - I'd recommend reaching out to Magicshine customer support to see if they can help. I agree with you regarding wired vs all-in-one headlight designs. I'd only recommend wired light setups for MTB or if you do very long road rides as the external battery packs help extend runtimes and could easily be swapped or replaced.

@@TheSweetCyclists The problem is they make the ebike lights supposedly compatible across a wide voltage ranges (except the ones designed specifically for one specific motor's light voltage wiring), when they really only "kinda" work with them. For instance these MagicShines ebike lights and again, specifically the one I purchased that "works" within 6-12v. When the light firmware recognizes a voltage higher than it's lights' standard battery packs at 7.4v it successfully steps down the voltage to protect the circuit. But, when it sees a lower voltage than that such as Giants 6v circuit it does nothing when it should have a simple amplification IC to make sure the LEDs are powered up to the level they should be. Instead, they simply put a declaimer that the lights will be dimmer at lower voltages. I am pretty sure all the ebike NON OEM lights run the same scam when they say cross compatible. As far as strapping a light with it's own pack on your ebike, you right about that with regard to the current weak designs for the ebike lights. But, if you know the exact voltage and amps supplied by your ebike's light circuit and can get an OEM or with those exact requirements, it is kinda silly to strap another battery pack to your ebike; saying you don't want to drain your ebike battery lol. That is, considering it drops your night rides by about ~1% or you total battery's consumption for a night ride. Also, for your light measurements might want a cheap Luminometers (you said you don't have) for your reviews such as the one Francis at MTBR uses for reviews. When getting these get with Prime membership and get minimum 3 and should do 4 as a general rule and make some realtime measurements to find one that is closest to accurate and send the others back. :) I really don't bother much doing reviews but I am pretty good at recognizing light manuf BS as well as just marketing reviews vs real independent reviews. Best regards, and thanks again for review of the BATTERY packed MS lights which are really best in class still even now at their now higher price point vs that of high end crazy priced lights. smile.amazon.com/Proster-Luxmeter-Illuminance-0-1-200000-0-01-20000/dp/B0718VXDC5

These updated MJ-90XS series has a "verified output" unlike the previous generation of "theoretical output." I don't have testing equipment to confirm, but the 3000 / 4500 lumen outputs should be real and seem to be bright enough. Just note on max settings the internal thermal sensors will cut the output down as the light heats up.

The previous generation of the MJ lights had that feature (blue tooth button you could mount anywhere) but they aren't currently offered with the MJ-90XS series. The Eagle F3 is actually one of my favorite Magicshine lights, the lens optics are really well done (we have a review of it here kzitem.info/news/bejne/tp17qImiqHWZqpw). I think the Eagle F3 has a wider beam (it's a much bigger light) but the 906 is brighter. I think the Monteer lights are probably closer to the Eagle F3 headlight. It has a similar spot / flood / dual modes but it does use a one button interface which isn't as nice as the two button design of the Eagle F3. It's a larger light so the beam is nice and wide.
