My comment "300blk replaces 556" Is not to say that 300blk was literally designed to surpass the 556 round. I said this poorly but what I mean is: In the context of say, you or a rifleman, 300blk has very similar performance, designs, and interoperability such that a person that typically runs a 556 AR, can instantly transition to 300blk due similar recoil, AR15 pattern, same mag pouches etc. It replaces, and then functions as a near 1:1 analog. This is in contrast to handing someone a Mp5SD, or a p90, or a whatever. It's a new gun functionally.

Historically, 300 was to replace the MP5 for better CQB operations and then out to some distance. I've been shooting it for a number of years now. I researched it before I got into it, so I have it for the niche I thought it would serve. If you're not going to suppress it, why bother. I reload so the cost of ammo isn't so bad. It is a chore to get into, but it's worth it if you're really going to commit to it. My HD 300 is an 8.2 inch, but it's a rifle length with my high-volume CAN. It is hearing safe indoors.

I’ve come back and watched this video about 5 times now. My first AR build was a 300Blk bc I’m a dumb kid and thought it was cool. As some friends and started getting more and more into prepping and building “do all” 5.56 rifles I was almost at the point of selling the .300 upper. Watching this multiple times finally made me bite the bullet on a suppressor and a decent amount of subs to hold on to and store the upper away for the day we hope doesn’t come. Every time I watch this I understand just a little more about the niche but very real role of .300Blk

300 AAC was literally designed to be a "fighting" round. It does not compete with .556 because that was not the intention of the design. 300 AAC was designed to be a clandestine round to be fired from a short barrel sub sonic, and it serves that purpose exceptionally well. I can run 300 AAC with my standard AR15 mags and lowers and when my .556/.223 cases get tired, I can saw the top off of them and reuse them as 300 AAC cases... The trick to FRH's is to add more water than your supposed to, let it soak into the heating packet for a couple of seconds then pour out the excess water. This ensures all of the heating element is activated but isn't drowned. Edit: Now that Ive finished the video, I think we're on the same page on the use of .300 blk. Its a compromise, it excels in subsonic loads but its mediocre in supersonic performance. Absolutely get an adjustable gas system, I recommend the Rifle Speed gas syste since its a toolless system. If you want reliable performance with subsonic ammo you have to run a fairly light buffer and buffer spring so being able to quickly crank down the gas when you switch to supers is ideal.

I'm very happy with my two 300BO rigs, with the efficiency of the short barrels being the primary draw for me, but only when I need a short barrel.

Thanks for doing this video. As a reloader who casts and powder coats my own ammo, I find 300 Blackout to be my second favorite to practice with and shoot. It’s kind of dumb for me to get into 300 Blackout as here in Hawaii suppressors are a big no go. But it is what it is. Cheaper for me than shooting 7.62x39. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Bonus points for the REAL Nova footage at the end. At this point she is the only reason I watch your videos. 😜 Aloha 🤙🏽

I recognize that this is going beyond the premise of the video but, if you also consider non-combat situations, .300blk excels as a short range hunting cartridge that is much more capable at dropping midsized game. Consider .300blk loaded with 150gr BTSPs is essentially a shooting a 30-30. Additionally, 200+ grain subs work great on predators like coyotes (where the reduced sound signature can help with getting more shots off).

Thanks for the video. Good stuff. I did have a comment about energy. I believe you mentioned that 5.56 has more energy than 300 blk inside 150 yds or so… However, you have to get barrel lengths of roughly 16” or longer to start getting more energy out of 5.56 than 300blk. Where 300 blk shines is with a short barrel. The energy from most defensive rounds in 300 blk are much greater than 5.56 in similar barrel lengths, until you get to those longer barrels. Example: 110gr 300blk from a 10.3” barrel delivers between 1100-1200 foot pounds. 5.56 out of same barrel between 800-950 foot pounds, depending on which grain. This same analogy holds true anywhere from a 5.5” barrel out to about a 13” barrel. So, in a longer barrel, 5.56 does deliver more energy than 300blk inside 150 yards. But, 300 blk delivers more energy at self defense distances (and inside 150 yds) than 5.56 in barrels 13” or less. Of course, this does not hold true for subsonic 300 blk. I’m only talking about supersonic loads.
@es4583
8 ай бұрын
It is that past 150 yards, 5.56 in the heavier 70-77 grain has more retained energy than 300 blackout. This is due to higher ballistic coefficient of the heavy 5.56 versus the light 110-125 grain 300 blackout projectiles. Take 77 TMK with a bc of .42 or 77 SMK with a bc of .372 and you need a 150+ grain .308 diameter bullet to match those bc values. So the way this works out, is that any 300 blk load with more muzzle energy than heavy 5.56, has a lower bc and retained energy at range. While any 300 blk load with an equal bc has less muzzle energy than heavy 5.56, because 300 blk doesn't have the powder capacity to push them up to sufficient velocity. Even though 300 blackout has 10-20% more energy at the muzzle from a 10.3 inch barrel, there no actual lethality difference between 5.56 and 300 blackout. You can see this in ballistic gel tests. What the bullet is designed to do matters more than the total amount of energy.
@toddwatts3768
8 ай бұрын
@@es4583 I agree that past 150 yards, 5.56 is flatter and starts carrying more energy. My comment was specifically about inside 150 yards. The video said 5.56 carries more energy inside 150 yards. That simply isn’t true, even if using heavy otm/bthp like the 77gr. Barrels less than the 13” range, 300 blk carries more energy. Also, if you use a bullet designed to expand or fragment, the wound channel and energy transfer is greater in gel. Ammo such as 110 gr vor tx, or 120gr sig elite hunting carry more energy than 5.56 (again, in barrels 13” or less) and superior terminal performance at self defense distances. Don’t get me wrong, I like 5.56 also, I have 10 5.56 rifles/pistols. They also do a great job of messing up gel and 2 legged critters. So inside 150 with a 13” or less barrel, 300blk wins. Out of longer barrels 14.5, 16, 18” etc… 5.56 wins.
@es4583

@@toddwatts3768 here is the thing about the supposed advantage that 300 blk has inside of 150 yards: you can only make an animal so dead. You can't make an animal 20% more dead than dead. If X amount of ft lbs will kill your target, then X+20% is not going to kill it anymore than just X ft lbs. Dead is dead. It doesn't matter if you shoot a target twice at 20 ft with Mk262 from a Mk18 or twice with 110 TAC-TX from a 10.3 300 blackout, in both cases the target is going to rapidly expire. The state of Colorado says that a cartridge to hunt Elk with has to have at least 1000 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards. So if 1000 ft lbs of energy will down an Elk, how much does it take to down a 150-250 lb animal with 2 legs? Let's not forget that on average it only takes 2-3 shots of 9 mm to stop aggressive 150-250 mammals. A double tap of either supersonic 300 blk or 5.56 inside of 150 yards, will greatly exceed 1000 ft lbs. So, it doesn't really matter which one you use inside 150 yards for defensive purposes. The result will be the same.

In my opinion much of the math here changes if one makes 300BLK their primary. The round in differing configurations covers so many different applications that it can eliminate the need for even having in the toolbox several cartridges/firearms. With many applications handled by a change in bullet and/or upper. I personally have no significant investment in 5.56 at all. The use cases where 5.56 has an advantage are small and unlikely for me. Similarly I have no investment in any form of PCC, the uses cases where any form of PCC has advantage over 300BLK are also very small. When one system can do so much the cost of that one system can be much higher and still be advantageous.

@@trentonfiffia8063 Decibels are logarithmic. Your AR9 is not half the decibels of your sub 300 blk out. And a subsonic 300 blk is about 125 decibels. An unsuppressed 16 in 5.56 shooting M193 is 165-167 decibels. A suppressed 5.56 can get down to 133 decibels depending on suppressor and barrel length. Any suppressed supersonic bullet is going to produce a 130 decibel sound from the supersonic crack of the bullet. Military Arms Channel even proved that a supersonic bullet still produces a 130 decibel crack 200 yards downrange as it passes by an observer. Oh, and at 200 yards a suppressed gun shot is no quieter than an unsuppressed one. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pZCVqJubgGKBZKQ This is because of the inverse square law. The 165 decibels is mostly the expanding gases, but that drops 46 decibels to 119 decibels at 200 yards. The 130 decibel sound of the bullet predominates and drowns out the sound of the gases at the muzzle. And if you look at the ballistic drop data at Hornady, subsonic 300 blk from a 16 inch barrel has 2 inches less drop than 45 ACP from a 5 inch barrel at 150 yards. The energies are also comparable. www.hornady.com/ammunition/

It’s perfect for white tail deer and wild hogs and has replaced the 30-30’s everyone used to run to albeit they still use them a ton. It’s also a great home defense weapon in my experience. You can build a good quality platform for around $800 these days, September 2023 here, and in my specific case I’d take it over 5.56 all day long. But then again I’ve been in it long enough I have stock piled ammo, mags, parts, etc. so maybe I’m unique in this.

I have 5.56 and .308 capabilities as well, so resupply in SHTF isn't a huge concern. I'll run the 300BLK until it's gone, then simply swap to 5.56 for the same purposes(closer range stuff). The rich only care about your money, but the government hates you and wants you weak and dependent on them.

Another angle to the .300 BO 'fighting carbine' discussion that was only just touched on in the beginning of the video- that this round would make very efficient use of 8"-12" barrel lengths for supers. The option to run the can with the subs to minimize sound profile does exist and is still the major novelty, but focus instead on just how light and handy such a setup would be if you took off the can. I figure this would be the true modern successor to the M1 carbine. Only a little larger and heavier than a PDW, but still distinctly rifle-like in performance.

Tried out some different chamberings for different purposes, including .300BO. Have always come back to 9mm, 5.56, .22lr, 12 gauge, and .308. If you are looking at a tiny bag gun or subsonic suppressed - 9mm. Ammo selection is a big part of the equation.

AAC (PSA) offers a few 5.56 loads in the 70-77gr weight range, that are actually quite affordable, using bullets from Hornaday, Sierra, Barnes, and their own 77s. The load with their own 77gr are around 60 cents per round shipped.

FRH trick is to fill it up, dump out the extra until it's at the fill line and lean it against a rock or something. You can see the angle and instructions on the FRH.

Lol there's no trick. Very simple/detailed/pictured instructions are on the bag itself. If marines can figure out without being told, then anyone can do it!

@@mugshotmarley you missed the lean against a rock or something. That's the most important part.

The one upside for me and the reason I bought one is hunting. I can't use a 556 in my state but it used AR controls and ergos and optics mounting and it's fine on deer as a brush gun out to 100-150 yards And a PSA upper in .300 blk was literally cheaper then a 12 gauge slug barrel
