regarding joints at 43 .. perhaps its odd, but for me when going higher reps sometimes my joints hurt more, not less. its seems to be the 'repetitive use' symptom.. sets of 25 reps for 5 sets is way more joint use then sets of 10 reps. perhaps its a different type of joint pain then what other heavier lifters experience. but high reps is a no go for my elbows . tricep push downs with lighter weight and drop sets is a pain , but doing straight sets with the stack and only 10 reps feels fine

Suggestion to Steve: if you do a single leg press turning your feet relatively inward, you might find the outer quad get a ton of stretch action going. Now we all know that regional muscle hypertrophy is minor blah blah but let's just make it clear that getting an outer quad stretch akin to a preacher curl stretch is unheard of, and stretch under load is big for hypertrophy.

are bent over rows even that good at *building* the erectors though? I think it *requires* good erectors to get the most out of it but I wonder if it's not the best at actually building erectors. Seems like the erectors get built by other things (deadlifts and other hinges) and then, once you have strong ones, the bent over row can be used to build the upper back. otherwise, for most, I bet erectors give out before upper back is taxed.

Good points. I think it’s fair to say it’s an erector builder if you flex and extend your spine throughout the ROM - Harry

Can totally relate with the joint issues! When I was 17 I got shoulder impingement from getting too strong too fast especially with pressing movements (+neglecting my rotator cuff/pulling movements) and had to recover for an entire year from this false kind of training, which made me so much more conscious of my body and made me focus more on technique and balance and learn more about human physiology Great tips from Dr. Mike about this topic again! 💪Think injury prevention and sustainability are things that are too often over-seen in this sport (especially on social-media with all this new fancy special exercises e.g. with fricking bosu-balls or so😅)
