I can tell you from experience, I’ve lost a lot of deer using the SST. They do not penetrate adequately and I’ve never had an exit wound on large deer. The time I used a SST, large 8-pt shot at 125yds, was in a 300 win mag. Deer ran like it never was hit and ran over 150yds with NO blood trail. Only luckily found it after walking over one hour looking for it. Perfect center shoulder hit with no exit and no blood. I switched to Barnes tsx and swift sciroccos and they exit 100% of the time at any range and any angle.

I know where you're coming from. Hornady has a very good reputation with their Interlock bullets. In the quest for a perfect BC they developed the SST which is not a bonded bullet. The SST has a strong tendency to come apart at higher velocities. Its the same with the Leverevolution ammo for lever actions. Its great to be able to get a higher BC on a bullet safe for tubular magazines but the shooter or hunter gives up the bonded or interlocked benefit. Idon't hunt long range so BC for me is not important. What is important is having a bullet with guts that will hold together and transfer its energy into the animal I'm hoping to take as humanely as possible.

I loaded the 150 gr SST in my Win M88 several years ago for my nephew. He got his first buck with it at about 50 yards. Bullet hit a little back but cut one lung in half! Also drstroyed the bottom of the liver. Other lung was mush in the bottom. It walked 5 yards & dropped. That 150 gr SST did the job.

Yeah for sure it’s disappointing to grab a box of factory beans and have them all come out under preforming speeds, especially when 90% of guns made have 22 inch barrel, even my 300wm has a miserly 24 inch barrel Come on ammo companies test with a real life barrel, 26-28 inch barrel just isn’t happening anymore 😢

We have a place in the mountains of northern New Mexico. I keep a Savage 10 in 308, loaded with the 150gr SST, ready if I need it. I consider the performance spectacular. It can handle any critter than needs attention. From coyotes, bobcats, lion, bear, antelope, deer, aoudad, or elk, the 308 150 SST just works well. Well balanced cartridge and load combination.

I absolutely love your videos. I've been binge watching the playlists for several days. Like you state, gel isn't a perfect analog for living tissue, but I believe it's probably the best we've got. One additional figure I would like to suggest is for you to include the percent of billed muzzle velocity that you achieved in your test. For example this load achieved 97.5% if I did the math correctly (school was a long time ago for me). I like the addition of the estimated impact velocities. Thank you so much for your great content.

Finally bought a chronograph earlier this year. Tested my Bergara squared crest 308 it has a 20 inch barrel. Fired two 150 grain loads and I was very surprised. They were the Nosler ballistic tip and Winchester power point. Both were in the 2800s with the Winchester being a little faster.

I took a friend to TX hunting pronghorn in 2008. It was his first big game hunt with a rifle. He bought a stainless Rem 700 308 and used this exact ammo. A very long and detailed story short, it took all 5 shots in the rifle to kill the buck starting at 250 yards. Only shots 4 and 5 penetrated the animal and that was after it suffered several minutes and was shot at 10 feet and only through lung. Shots 1, 2, 3 blew up on the scapula and literally only removed meat and skin. The bone was intact still when we walked up to it. Shot 1, 250 yards. Shot 2, 250 yards. Shot 3, 100 yards. We have detailed pics and video. I couldn't believe it. That was my only experience with SST bullets which I figured were like a Nosler ballistic tip which I've been using since 1990 (never once had a blow up). I'll never us an SST on game unless it's a coyote. I hate watching animals suffer from poor bullet performance. And this buck suffered a lot. Not a very good first experience for the hunter who had numerous bow kills under his belt. He also didn't buy the ammo I recommended which was Nosler 150 Accubond.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
Ай бұрын
That's bizzarre! My only experience with the SST is the 162 gr that I loaded for my 7mm Rem Mag, but even at just under 3000 fps, it held together well enough to flatten a lot of game for me. It took elk at 45 yards and deer at 450. I don't doubt your experience, but I have to say it is unusual, especially for .308 Win. One of the .308 characteristics I really appreciate is its modest velocity typically doesn't require premium bullets to hold together and perform well. I was thinking about loading some 180 gr SSTs up for one of my AR-10s this hunting season since the listed BC is similar to the 175 gr SMKs I normally shoot out of it and .308 is just so much cheaper to shoot that 7mm Rem Mag.

I've shot deer, moose, elk, sheep, pronghorn with almost every kind of bullet down to vmax and I've never seen a bullet fail to penetrate a shoulder/ scapula. Sounds like bs and I see it parroted all the time. Pronghorn bones aren't steel, for that matter moose bones aren't steel and at that velocity and energy they will at a minimum break the bone and sent fragments into vitals. Maybe your buddy was shooting dirt and ricocheting bullets into the pronghorn but they definitely didn't do as you say. I'm sorry that the hunt didn't go as planned but that's not how ballistics or energy work in practice.

Another good video mason. I bought one of your leather cartridge cuffs several years ago and can't speak highly enough about it. It really adds a nice traditional look to a rifle and I put some High density foam under the cheek rest part of it to raise my cheek weld up some and it makes my rifle feel so nice to shoot. I have other rifles with adjustable cheek pieces but they are hard plastic. Nothing nicer than some soft warm leather and foam underneath it. I would love to see what you could come up with for a product that does that right out of the gate (Just an idea). I wish I could post a pic in the comments to show readers what I'm talking about

I have looked for other factory loads to shoot from my .308 Weatherby Vanguard with a 20 inch barrel but the #8093 Hornady fly really really well out of it. I can shoot 1/2 groups with it pretty regularly at 100 yards. I have killed close to 3O deer over the last 15 years with this round; one of which was a 140 inch 11 point. In all of the shots (most when 75-100 yds) I have made with this round on deer, I have not had a complete pass through. I really don't like that I'm not getting pass throughs but I can argue with the amount of meat that this combination has put in my freezer over the years. QUESTION? I have never chronographed this round out of my 20 inch barrel...?? I would be interested to here your thoughts on the fps specs. Enjoy your vids!! Kind regards.
