The 308 is great running subsonic and suppressed while shooting over a game indicating dog. Which is popular for thick New Zealand bush. Lots of people use the same rifle for subs and supersonic making it very versatile for hunting and pest control. It's something North American folk rarely talk about, but really common down here.

I have been wondering about lighter .308 loads that my 11 yr old daughter can handle. I became disabled and unable to work about two years ago. I have been looking at budget rifles in kid friendly calibers. I can't hunt anymore, but my daughter wants to hunt this year. I have a rem700 in .308 already, but most factory loads are just a little bit much for her. I'm definitely going to be looking for a softer load that she can handle. That would save me time and money.

Gentlemen, I really enjoy the show, always good information and discussion. I am a .308 fan and have been since I started hunting when I was 14. It is the first and only cartridge / caliber I use for large / medium size game. I have shot other cartridges / calibers, but my choice to hunt with is .308. I have owned / hunted with various versions of weapon system, Remington 700, M1A, AR-10, and now a Tikka T3X. I laugh when people tell me the .308 is not a good hunting caliber. I have taken plenty of game with it. I have used various loads for it, factory and hand loads. I stay in the 165 - 168 grain weight. For the last several years I have been using Speer Gold Dot 168 grain soft point. It's a bonded bullet, accurate, and lethal. I have shot this out of bolt guns and semi auto, all have consistent 1 MOA groups at 100 yards. I can hit an 8" plate out to 400 yards, and this is range bench and hunting conditions. I have only needed to take a 300-yard shot to take my last elk. Generally, I have been able to get closer, 100-125 yards. All animals have been taken with one shot I cannot emphasize enough that shot placement is key! I know Ron Spomer and others will scoff, but for my hunting style, 400 yards and in, the .308 is all I need. In 1981 when my brother and I drove to Alaska and back from Arizona we talked to a RCMP officer in the Yukon Territory. We talked about what weapons they carry. He showed us Remington 700 BDL in .308 with a Weaver 4X scope. He told us they use this for bears, both black bears and grizzly bears, using a Remington Core-lok 180 grain soft point. If the bear was really close, they used a Remington 870 with a 12-gauge 3" slug. After that I was sold on the .308 for hunting.

I live less than 5 miles from the PA line and frequently hang out in PA with folks from PA. Semiauto's are not legal to hunt with in PA, enter the Remington pump. They are called, "Amish automatics!" All four of my pumps shoot sub moa, 2 760's in 257 Bob and 35 Remington and 2 7600's in 308 and 280 Remington. It's a sickness.

Sure they are having Sig release a lower pressure .277 consumer version for the pain in the butt public . For my 'first' rifle, after I've got a 30-30 Win in my far yougness, I wanted something to shoot targets at 100 meters, and 200 meters, 17hmr was a option, but sometimes I have the possibility to shoot in open rural spaces, on gongs, until 800 meters or even more, long range was also my wish, so I choosed 308 calibre : cartridge not too expensive, not too much recoil, but a good sensation that 22LR or 17hmr do not give. And I didn' want to buy two different rifles, for budget reasons. Yes, .308 is very versatile. Greetings from France.

Awesome video showing the versatility of the venerable 308 Win. I sadly have never owned one but I am highly interested in it because of that versatility and under 500 yard terminal performance on game. Plus ammo availability and price vs most other cartridges. Easy to load for if I want to. I also plan on getting a suppressor and 308 would be perfect for that. A breakdown of the Shorty 308 build would be interesting 🤔 Outside of the REM 760 Pump, you can find 6.5 Creedmoor in all of those platforms but I still have a spot for the old 308 over the 6.5 CM.

If folks are just sticking to manually operated rifles I can see the argument for .30-06 being more versatile; where the .308 pulls ahead is you have far more semi-auto options in .308 than .30-06, especially since the .308/7.62x51mm was specifically designed to take advantage of semi-auto rifles with detachable magazines.

Just chiming in with a cartridge testing suggestion. In light of all the hubbub about the 7mm PRC having recently been found to be underperforming with respect to its advertised velocity claims, it might be interesting to see if there are any other magnum cartridges, say for instance the 7 Rem Mag, are falling short on their respective advertised velocities as well.
@jfess1911
4 ай бұрын
The Hornady 7 PRC velocity issue largely a powder shortage thing. Hornady stated that they used an off the shelf propellant from Europe. If you look at their reloading data, all of the fastest powders for 162 - 190 grain bullets come from Europe. Those factories have been maxed out making ammo for Ukraine for over two years. I think that Hornady screwed up by not putting the true velocity on boxes of known slower ammo. Other than outright fibbing for velocity, it would take research or luck to consistently find underperforming ammo. It is pretty much a lot by lot issue. Some lots are 100+ fps faster than others. It also does not help that most KZitem velocity tests are done on new rifles that haven't been broken in yet and have not yet reached normal velocity.

@@jfess1911 Hornady WAS getting those velocities when the cartridge was released, it was just short lived due to the war. That's been confirmed by 3rd party shooters who have/had early runs of the cartridge. It'll come back...

I don't have a lot of experience with .308 Winchester. I have one firearm in that caliber, a bolt action Ruger American Hunter. I haven't stretched its legs out too much as I've just shot it at the 100 yd range but it's fun. Calling it the "Hunter" is a bit of a stretch as it's heavy out of the box at 9 pounds, plus the scope and bipod weight probably make it an even 10 pounds or so. Not exactly something I'd want to lug around for a long time but I got it mostly for recreational shooting as I wanted to expand beyond the 25 yd indoor range shooting which I mostly did so I joined an outdoor shooting range. Next time I go, I'll give the 200 yd lane a try, then 300 yd and so on until I get to the limit at 600 yds that this range goes to. I just wanted to get good at 100 yds first before I tried to pretend I'm a sniper. LOL!

Actually built a 13.5” ar-10 in 308 for this very reason. As a SHTF rifle. Always ammo available Can do up close Can still effectively take a 300yrd shot and drop just about anything living. In SHTF over 300yrds wouldn’t really be a shot to take anyways. Throw in the advances in NV/ thermal scopes and your set. Day/night; close up or “longer” range. All the above with wayyy more knockdown power than a 5.56 could ever get! Nowwwww to just get someone to do a bullpup setup for the AR-10! Lol AR platform for the reliability and large numbers out there for ever needing to find new parts in SHTF scenario.

I also forgot to state that I have encountered way too many hunters trying to make up for accuracy and practice with caliber and have the attitude that if they shoot a bigger caliber, they don't have to be that accurate. These are the people that give hunting a bad name. I also believe hunters need to practice and be comfortable with their gun / caliber. I hear to many stories of the person taking a shot with a large caliber at "Bragging Distances" that really don't practice at those long distances. I was taught to get close, as close as you can and don' shoot at something at distances you are not comfortable with. I have shot out to 600 yards, but I am really comfortable at 400. If I cannot get with 400 yards, then I didn't make a proper stalk, or the terrain was not going to allow a recovery.

Agreed! The 30-06 is the more versatile one with respect to variety of larger game it can take BUT the 308 is the more versatile in the variety of people that can shoot it (handle it) while almost being as versatile in the kind of game it can take. Of course if you can handle the recoil of the 30-06, may as well take the 06 (and maybe get a 223 for smaller game/predator control). That being said... I'm inclined to the 308 simply because it was what my dad had and what I learned on. Then, rather than getting an 06, maybe you can get a 375h&h or higher (if you can handle it). 22lr, 308win and 375h&h and practice, practice, practice. No game on this planet you can't take.

If I was limited to one rifle cartridge the rest of my life, I'd use a 7mm-08. The 7mm shoots faster, flatter, carries farther, and bucks the wind better while usually having less recoil. Depending on bullet and load, the 7mm can often hit harder past 200 yards due to higher initial velocity and bullet BC. The .308 has a big advantage in retail ammo availability, but that's about it.
