VN24 - 31.03.2022 - Unna A1 / Germany - The driver of a semitrailer truck had to execute an emergency braking maneuver at the end of a traffic jam that had formed in front of an accident scene on the A1 freeway in order to avoid hitting the rear of the vehicle in front of him. That worked so far. However, his load of 50 massive steel sheet piles followed the inertia and moved forward a few meters on the loading area toward the tractor unit. There, the end wall buckled by about 45 degrees and rested against the rear wall of the cab. Fortunately, no individual sheet piles came loose and did not break through the rear wall, where they could have split the driver in half. The driver initially tried to re-secure the load by tightening the lashing straps, but it was no longer possible to steer the tractor around bends. The police commissioned a salvage contractor, who initially attempted to push the load back using the tow truck's hydraulics, but this was not possible due to the heavy weight of the load. A replacement tractor unit with a longer chassis finally pulled the trailer, which was obviously not approved for this type of load, to a secure area.
