Hello Tim. I like what you're doing on the prep of your heads. For a suggestion, a 260°to 268° cam would be a good idea. In an attempt to achieve maximum volumetric efficiency in the duration. Not only you take advantage of the cylinder head flow, but cylinder pressure. This subject is not talked about near enough. Thus, enhancing the over all torque curve. The three to five angle job job with be worth as much as 20 to 30 hp with the port work. And, surprise the improvement in MPG! Low and mid range torque for over all drivability improvement. Thus, a 318 that will run. I like your channel and what you do. Take care, Ed.

Appreciate the feedback. You are correct and I agree on everything. On this particular build, I will be sticking with the stock heads, intake, carb, cam, etc just to see what difference there will be (if any) with very minor change and very little spent. We are excited to see, and, we are excited to get back in the van. It's our favorite to travel in!

I have found there are two tipes of stock cam gears, one for trucks and one for cars I believe, because there are about 3 to 4 degrees diference. The one are based on was stock for a ram charger, and I compared with one from a 70 dart... I think it could help the avanced one for this rpm range...

I have a 72' 318 in an abody with later model 'swirl port heads' 86'-91' pre magnum, 302 part number heads and with the usual bolt on hot rod simple stuff, long tube headers, small port Performer manifold and 600cfm carb and comp xe268h cam kit it runs fairly well, 14.5" of vacuum and 15 mpg with a convertor and so far stock gears. Pistons are factory and .080 in the hole, so compression is not very high, 9.2:1 with .028 head gasket. Very snappy motor and should get even better with a 3.55 in back. Love this motor

You might like to watch some of David Vizard's cylinder head porting videos. Typically, the pushrod pinch point does not restrict flow and you do not need to hog out the ports to increase flow and doing so will only serve to decrease port velocity and engine power. The 1/2 inch just above and below the valve seat is the most restrictive to flow and next important is the throat / short turn area. Do a good job of blending the lower angle of the valve job into the bowl and consider mild widening of the short turn/throat/bowl on the cylinder wall side of the intake valve port to increase charge swirl to make for a more efficient burn. Vizard's videos do a good job of explaining this. There should be no sharp edges in the combustion chamber and you can grind down the face of sacrificial valves to help accomplish removing the ridge around the valve seat in the combustion chamber. Going to a higher lift camshaft with a narrower lobe centerline angle (109 degrees?) would likely increase performance without a fuel economy penalty. Also consider aerodynamic drag. There is not a lot you can do with the van short of a radical chopping of the top, which is not something most owners desire. You can use a chin spoiler or air dam to try to reduce drag. The van should also be free of any useless protuberances sticking out into the wind. Ecomodders.com is a website that has a lot of information on this type of modification. Have fun with your project and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

I realize you're not going into the shortblock, but a really nice and cheap mod for the 318 in a heavy or gear-limited application is the 360-2bbl cam. Instead of 240 duration and .390" lift, you get 252 degrees and .420" at the valve. I found one on the clearance table at a speed shop for $35 but Ebay has them from time to time really cheap. Will work with your 340 springs or fresh 318 springs even. I think it has a 109LSA which is better than the 318 (112) or the bigger 340 cam which is 114, and needs more compression to work. Love the channel and this series, along with Race Truck and the Magnum!!

Another thing I would have done, is unshrouded the valves and as you said have a 3 angle valve job, done. And backcut the valves. Your restriction is still going to be in the pushrod pinch & throat size on theses heads, so doing those two things. Will only help in your low lift flows, which would be essential to fuel economy

Well I figured since that's probably as much fuel economy that can be gotten out of a 5,000lb. 4wd pickup. Granted I also put dual exhaust, a Wieand action plus with a Holley 600, I think the minor valve work helped the most for economy.

I watched a video from uncle Tony where he put the valves in a drill press and spun them and took a file and removed the lip from the stem side where the angle cut starts so the air could flow buy the valve and I did it on my valves and it seemed to help. But I am also running 1966 283 closed chamber heads on my 1983 engine to give it a little more compression.

Only thing with aluminum heads is that they are usually designed for RPM and flow. If I was to do major changes, I'd probably go with a roller block like a 5.2 magnum, and then put a A500 OD behind it.

Cool stuff, it ought to run much better now with all of the ports ported out to the max and we were able to get those bigger valves that you asked about in and the heads angle milled flawlessly. We were able to get the flow numbers up as well on average 290 @ 28 . We got the exaust port raised .175" as well so we think that you will be super satisfied with the extra power they will make for you. Just as soon as we get finished with the intake we will get them headed back your way. That van will be a different animal when you get it back together again with that cam I spec'd out for you.
