Hey adventurers, welcome back to Tents.and.Timber! Join us as we dive into Day 9 of our epic 32-day journey from Ontario to Newfoundland and back. Today, we're immersing ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes of Gros Morne National Park.
Despite the persistent rain looming in the forecast, we refuse to let it dampen our spirits. Instead of embarking on the daunting 17-kilometer journey up Gros Morne Mountain, we've chosen to explore shorter trails nearby. Five months of anticipation led us to this moment, with plans to venture to another stunning destination in Newfoundland tomorrow. Yet, our passion for hiking the majestic mountain remains unwavering. Optimism fuels our decision to extend our stay in Gros Morne, holding onto the hope of clearer skies tomorrow.
After a quick breakfast we left our campsite at Green Point and travelled to Berry Head Pond Trail for a misty morning walk around a cute little body of water. It was filled with song birds and an array of gorgeous wild flowers, including Newfoundlands national flower the Pitcher Plant. Next up was the Berry Hill Trail, which was just over 1 kilometer long, but pretty much straight up a mountain, or hill. Despite the clouds there were some great views from the top of the surrounding mountains and ocean.
The third trail was called Berry Hill Pond and it was quite similar to the first trail, but still gorgeous in its own way. Despite the misty rain, the enchanting blend of the mossy forest floor and the vibrant expanse of water created a breathtaking backdrop for our hike. From there we headed further South to Lobster Cove and hiked around some of the many short trail sections. There are many over lapping trails here such as: Lobster Cove Head trail, Lobster Cove Lighthouse Trail and Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse Trail. By this point in the day the winds were really starting to pick up so we moved into the historic lighthouse where we learned all about what life used to be like in the past in this area.
With the hunger pains starting to really flare up we headed back to our campsite in Green Point where we enjoyed one of our own homemade Mac and Cheese pasta lunches. Then with full bellies the rain came once again. Luckily all of the campgrounds in Gros Morne have incredible communal areas with indoor picnic tables, woods stoves, and kitchens, so we found shelter in one of them during the rain. Here we were able to charge up our Bluetti Power Station which has been powering both of our cell phones and camera gear over the last week. We also caught up on some journaling, reading and even fit in showers before deciding that four trails in one day wasn't enough.
For the fifth and final trail of the day we walked six kilometers along the Coastal Trail. This turned out to be one of the best hikes of the day as after 9 days of being on the road we were able to witness one of our first sunsets during this entire trip! We arrived back to our campsite in the dark and ravenous for dinner. After a quick dinner we crawled into the tent after a long full day of adventuring and called it a night.

Berry Hill Pond - easy, 2km loop
