I've said it before, but even just doing jazz and contemporary-ish choreography (for performances) while working properly with my hyperextension was enough to completely transform my leg muscles. I can wear clothes that were a tight fit 30lbs lighter than this, because it made such a difference! And now that I'm doing more ballet, I feel like I can move more neatly and precisely across the floor, in the way I always envied in others but could never quite replicate.

I don’t know if someone has asked this before but what are some of your favorite current ballerinas that you recommend watching??

People are allowed an opinion please people when is it disgusting to voice an opinion that one dancer pleases you more than another we live I a world where there will be no excellence as everyone is the same

I’m very interested to know why you think that Sofya is more talented than Maria? I hate to compare the sisters but I’ve always thought that Maria has more fluid motions, although this is most likely because she has more experience...

To answer this would mean to take a deep dive into the nuance of ballet pedagogy, potential analysis, which isn’t possible in a comment thread. I would also have to compare them both on video in extreme detail which isn’t something I’m likely to do. Good question though. Cheers - EC

Perhaps a video in what you believe makes a talented ballet dancer then? Like the body proportions, flexibility, artistry, etc... It may be a very hard topic to cover though as you said before.

Obviously there are physical attributes that are necessary to work in the profession, because to do otherwise will result in catastrophic injury. From my perspective it’s not about how thin, flexible or pretty a dancer is, the priority is their minds, wellbeing and the quality of their movement. Maya Plisetskaya would probably not be considered beautiful by today’s standard, certainly not thin or flexible enough, but she was a brilliant and remarkable human being. As a performer, Plisetskaya inhabited a different artistic universe than any ballerina of today. The most challenging bodies to train correctly and safely are those that are hyper-mobile. Svetlana and Misha are both very hyper-mobile just like Maria Khoreva. The difference is, strength building is at the core of my placement method, which trains out the hyper flexibility in the legs, providing stability and eliminating the possibility of injury. The world’s pedagogical methods have all transitioned to increasing the flexibility of already hyper flexible bodies, which creates instability, which is why we’ve seen a tragic increase in injuries over the last 30 years. The institutions are selecting for body types which require the highest level of expertise to teach and then assigning the least capable people to do the teaching. The pedagogical programs for teachers are compounding the problem by orders of magnitude. My essay for today 😊 Cheers - EC

@@BalletConrad I admire your courage in putting yourself out there by not always being complementary. That’s part of being a good teacher. I will say, however, that at the end of the day Ballet is entertainment. Even though we all SHOULD appreciate the quality of the movement … and being thin, flexible and pretty should be secondary, we must be honest. The theaters would be pretty empty (except for ballet instructors) if the dancers were fat, inflexible and ugly.

This was my question! Thank you so much for taking the time to make a video addressing it.

Thank you for making this video. I have been teaching this for years and have had to defend myself countless times against teachers who worked with the same students and pushed the complete opposite, told them to disregard what I was saying, and lord knows what else. Plus the quick little bit about jumping and straight legs in releve - I use the "order of operations" concept from math (though it's not a perfect fit) to break down what happens in what order on the way up and the way down. I've seen numerous teachers glaze right over this like it's not extremely important, or ignore it completely (maybe they don't know). And I do like these videos that discuss other dancers getting a large social following, especially since I've seen sooooo many start teaching classes online since COVID started. I've watched so many and said to myself, "This is professional level training? With all these issues?" Sometimes it makes me doubt that I know what I'm talking about, but then I see another one of your videos and you remind me that it's a problem, I'm not crazy.

Thank you for addressing hypertension. I really needed that. My ballet teachers said my legs don’t straighten all the way so I’ve been working on hyperextending my knees and legs to help with that. Oopps! 😂

Yes, only tighten your legs with a totally engaged rear, then you’re legs will be safe and healthy; your core and back are also components of this. I teach all of this at our institute. - EC

Hi Eric! It is so obvious that what you are saying is reasonable, no question about it. I heard that for the teachers in VA, streching at full length the hypermobile leg is wrong because the knee "locks" and the body sits. And they say it only for the standing leg, not for the other one. Isn't that crazy?

I have a question not related to this video, but to your online classes. For the barre for technique and placement, would you recommend stopping where the pointe section starts, or doing that section but on Demi-pointe? Assuming one is not in pointe shoes yet.
@BalletConrad

Depending on how your body is feeling you can work your demi-pointe provided you can maintain the engagement of your rear and legs. The priority is always to try and maintain your points of placement while working through the movements. Feel free to send us links to your barre work if you would like me to give you some specific feedback. Cheers - EC
