One of my biggest issues with the 2020 demo was the skybox, it looked empty and bland which took a lot out of the world. The skybox here looks beautiful and the day/night cycle is a great way to keep things fresh despite the different biomes (which I genuinely think they're saving for dlc/events) I think Halo Infinite clearly went through development hell and I wouldn't be surprised if it went through a ton of changes. Ultimately, Staten gave them stability and 343i somehow pulled Halo's tomb out of the ground. Now they just gotta build the pyramid around it

I don’t think that Open World design signifies that there CAN’T be changes to the environment. Just look at Arkham Knight. During a section of the story, the city vastly changes and becomes inhospitable until you solve that problem. The Open World doesn’t have to be 100% the same all the way through. Of course, it does kinda need to revert back to the status quo but I don’t think the Open World aspect inherently limits change. Putting collectibles in unrepeatable areas is a big mistake tho. If the game gives you the option to continue playing after it ends then every collectible should be available to backtrack.
@Nyctosuba
2 жыл бұрын
Not making big irreversible changes to the open world is important in games like RDR2 where you could spend almost a hundred hours in a single playthrough, but in shorter games like Halo where it's easier to play through them multiple times you absolutely can shake up the world, and it's usually better for it. The games that come to my mind are Far Cry 5 and Dragon's Dogma: In Far Cry 5 the map changes as big story events take place and landmarks get destroyed, and in Dragon's Dogma - avoiding spoilers as best I can - the entire world gets shaken up in the final act. Most missions can still be finished and new ones can be undertaken, but there's a very real and tangible effect the story's taken on the world and it opens up an entire new layer to the game with new monsters and equipment and enemy placements. A game like Infinite could easily make big changes to the game world and it'd probably be incredibly badass to start the game in nice pristine forests and end it with half the map glassed, just include NG+ for when you want to start over and not have to find all your collectibles again.

This is an extremely comprehensive review that really goes deep into the details most reviewers don't really touch on or gloss over which is fine when it's for the public, but as a Halo fan, I really appreciate the well spoken and in-depth feedback. Regarding the music however, while I do agree Halo 4/5 didn't entirely sound like Halo, I don't think their soundtracks should be dismissed. They had some really amazing music that added to the sound of Halo and fit the new direction the series was heading in, which was much darker due to the ominous nature of Halo 3's cliffhanger. While I'm glad Halo looks and sounds like classic Halo again, I hope they still retain the elements of part 4 that did work, and for me, the soundtrack was a big one. Halo can't be afraid to do new things. But now that 343 has proven that they understand the DNA of the series, hopefully they can still move in those directions in the future and bring back some of those new elements they introduced in Halo 4 in ways that'll be more accepted by the Halo community.

I just had an idea on how Scarab fights could be iterated on. I always felt they were a bit too easy to "defang", as it were, the flanks especially being pretty nonthreatening once you took out the turret operators. I have an idea about this, though. What if there was a two-way gravity lift on each side of the vessel? It could deploy shock troops if you got too close, but also reverse itself to "abduct" lower ranked enemies (such as Grunts) back into the vessel to man the empty turrets. There could even be a brute on a loudspeaker barking orders around like, "Worthless Unggoy! Get me a better crew!", or "Man the defenses!" as the Scarab sucks Banished infantry up to reinforce itself
@loaduscoolclipz5505

thatd be cool, though i think scarabs would still be way too easy to fight thanks to the grappling hook. i say make an entirely new enemy, one that has the spirit of the scarab fights but balanced to infinite's equipment. i know they kind of tried that with the kraken in halo 5, but hopefully if they do go in this direction they wont mess up again.

11:12 is the biggest gripe I have with this game. I don’t want this to be ruined for me but flat out fun combat isn’t enough, to nab my 60 bones. Where’s the swamps or jungle biomes or give me a desert setting like in Halo 3. They limited themselves by making this game open world, it just wasn’t meant for this style of game. Large yet linear sandbox gameplay is Halo. Each area you walked through drove you further into the plot and you always felt in control of where you can go because the game gives you just enough freedom to do so without leaving you feeling lost and ultimately bored with nothing to do.

Open world games can absolutely do permanent changes to the map, but the map, and any story aspects taking place in the affected area, must be built with that in mind from the start. There are 3 ways to do it. 1. Have multiple main characters repeatedly reference that the change will happen, and that the player character will never be able to reset the affected areas. 2. Force the player to complete, or at least acknowledge, every possible objective in the area before they are able to initiate the events that cause the change. 3. Have the change happen at a predetermined point that doesn't have anything in it that the player could have done before the change happens. The first method is fairly flexible, and can happen whenever the writers need it to in the story. The second method requires that it take place later on in the story, or at least not at the very beginning. The third method requires that the story do the change before the player can really do much in the affected area, so it works best either right at the beginning of the story, or right towards the very end.

Excellent video! What I think 343i should have done to address the lack of environmental variety in Infinite is to have used a sort of “multi-region open world” approach that The Witcher 3 did. That game had 5 total, different large maps that the player could easily go back and forth between (velen, white orchard, skellige, toussaint, Kaer Morhen, not counting the Temerian capitol map tho, since that is all an interior setting). Understanding that TW3 and Halo Infinite are two separate genres, I would have suggested that 343i have it so that there ARE in fact levels - just very large and open ones. This would allow for different biomes to be implemented, for the player to be able to replay certain “levels” AND would allow for the Banished/Harbinger to completely destroy one “region” or another in a narratively appropriate way and make it seem like the world is actually changing with the players advancement through the story. I really actually thought that this WAS going to be the approach, but alas it looks like it isn’t. Maybe down the line in a story DLC or something. One can hope.

Personal opinion but halo should not do open world. I love my open world rpgs, but with halo infinites sandbox and gadgets, i would have loved a halo 3 layout but with more verticality or open spaces. Infinite is a little too open. Lots of time where you wander without any banished contact, and then all of a sudden there are like 5 enemies surrounding explosives in the middle of the forest. makes no sense. also being able to just refill on weapons or just call in a scorpion at any time felt dirty. But besides that, i absolutely Looooove this game.

For future expansions they should go more into the direction of Metro Exodus. So: linear level -> open area -> linear level -> open area etc. They shouldn't make one connected open world which is divided into areas, but instead multiple smaller open areas that are divided by levels. Just like Metro Exodus, where you explore a swamp area, hop onto your train, have a linear mission in a cave and then go to an open desert area. Perhaps after the game we could fast travel back to other areas. I think that strategy gives us more to explore while not completely losing the Halo essence of multiple different environments in one game. I don't think Halo needs to be an open world game, but it can surely have some more open world-ish areas for the player to explore. Just like Exodus.

I agree with 90% of what I've heard you say in this video, however I disagree with the idea that the grappleshot overshadows the other equipment completely. Having beaten the campaign on legendary I can say that i used all the equipment sometimes more than the grapple. Thruster for hunters and other close engagements, threat sensor for LITERALLY EVERY ENCOUNTER, and the drop wall for phantoms and a ton of out of cover engagements. Yes, grapple for movement and long range engagements and on my normal difficulty speed run i think I only used my grapple but still the other equipment served a purpose.

Honestly I feel like the equipment is actually useful, not just the Grapple. The grapple can be used to stun and melee enemies. The threat sensor can be used to keep track of particularly tough enemies. The Drop wall can take hella damage and give you a breather in combat. The Thruster cans be used to get in and out of situations quickly. The equipment shines when you use them in tandem with one another and switching between them quickly, mastering it makes you feel unstoppable.

Makes me wish I was a big youtuber I have been a huge fan of halo since I was 8 when Combat Evolved came out. I remember being a little kid wondering about the forerunner and speculating on them and what happened to them and being so full of wonderment. Played Halo 1 so many times over and played Halo 2 and 3 religiously. Even read a ton of the books. I wont lie I am a bit butthurt I didn't get to partake in the campaign preview I know I don't deserve it but damn I think most of us sticking with this franchise since we were kids should have been given a chance. They can look back and see my longshot 8 account on those game and how many hours were put in. Enough of my temper tantrum. Good review man keep it up.

It’s strange. As someone who’s first game ever completed was halo 2 as a 4 year old. I never had any specific attachment to sounds like the overcharge plasma pistol or like the shield recharge. But it’s always nice to hear. I even never minded the art style change besides not liking as many armor or the elite looks. This game is the perfect blend of 343I’s love and some of the old bungie magic. Hats off to 343

This the LAST review I'm watching!! I'm seeing too many cutscenes and much of the map already.. NEED to experience this in the next few hours. Tbh, I think 343 should've gone open world since Halo 4. Requiem was perfect for it and Halo needed the major Refresh. Halo 5, to me, is the banished I do not talk about. Played the campaign once but enjoyed the hell out of Warzone Arena. My favourite part about the ai in terms of vehicles is that depending on what is in the vehicle they’ll have different behaviours. Elites stay at a distance and shoot in a ghost. Brutes try to splatter you more often. Not sure what grunts do

The idea that the world cant change because its an open world is incredibly flawed. There isnt a rule book stopping devs from making an open world that can change. Thats like adhering to trope just for the sake of it. It would have been amazing to see the world change, for sections to be destroyed or slotted in and if stupid collectibles and fobs are the reason they're not then thats just awful. That content isnt exciting or interesting and it's not worth sacrificing good game design over. The hype really clouded the judgement of much of the Halo fanbase, but especially the content creators.

There is this one Metroid crossover story I wanted to say, but not on stream. The Forerunners know and have a relationship with the Chozo. In fact, they allowed the Chozo to build their temples on the Halo Rings. I can see how they look, Beautiful stone carved rooms with statues with of both the Chozo and Forerunners. Ancient Chozo text and hieroglyphs telling the story of the relationship of the Chozo and the Forerunners. Even a collaboration of Forerunner and Chozo Technology in the temples and even the rings.

Maybe this isn't a big deal for most people, but I thought I'd share my opinion since it exists. The video is spoiler free, but still seems to include halo infinite campaign soundtracks. Personally when I try to avoid spoilers, I try to avoid as much content as possible. This includes visuals, story, and even soundtracks. My reasoning being that I want to feel the first full impact of these soundtracks at the appropriate time they're intended to be played ingame. Since these soundtracks seem to be from the campaign, which I haven't played yet, I won't be watching this video until I've heard them from the game or have finished the campaign. A little overboard on my part, but this is how I think, and would like to share my opinion. I look forward to watching this video when I am ready. Have a free like c: This was written under the assumption that this video actually includes campaign ost.

Personally. I think the FOBs would be more fun and more realistic if the Banished attempted to take them back sometimes. Maybe frame them like Squad Rescues, where you get a notification on the map that the Banished are massing near a friendly FOB. When you go there next, a wave attacks. It wouldn't need to happen often. But it's currently nonsensical that the Banished never try to take the territory back.

I never thought I’d say this after talking shit about this games mp but the campaign is on par with how I felt playing halo 2 and the anniversary for the first time, x2 the world feels massive, the enemies feel intimidating even the fucking jackals since they talk shit now as well as the grunts, I didn’t think they could truly mail that intimidating feeling being a T rated game but I was wrong for sure lol heroic feels exactly that like a mini taste of legendary, the fact that I can see my feet when I can’t in mp, yes to you might feel insignificant but just adds to the immersion of being this legendary warrior, the fact that you can pick up and throw explosive items that aren’t frag Grenades, the guns feel like they do their job, the cutscenes are amazing, an I didn’t think they could do better with making chief more realistic with his armor but the detail is crazy especially detaching a mini gun for the first time and seeing him move around looks like a walking tank,this games campaign is easily tied imo for the best halo campaign ever

The main difference between Bungie's Halo and 343 that bugged me was the 343 games didn't pickup the Master Chief and fly/drive to the next objective. We got a cutscene followed by a loading screen. I loved the scale of the original Halo games and one of the things that sold that was actually traveling to the next objective. Made the overall mission feel more tense and connected. Hoping the open world nature of Infinite means this will be a default situation, whether the player is in control of the route or not.

I'd contest that on Legendary difficulty, all the campaign gadgets find a much happier balance of usage. Grapple Shot no doubt dominates; it makes traversal a blast, easily swinging the Chief around. I personally loved it almost as much for the AOE electric slam you can do with it. BUT, once fully upgrades, the others do shine. Drop Wall with the wider protection and electrical boost can be really useful in firefights, especially against stuff like Skimmers and Sentinels -- helping you get precious seconds to line up the sights on certain weapons. Threat Sensor is invaluable for maintaining enemy positions, and it shows the enemy health which can help in prioritizing who to grind down. Thruster I found useful during the later game, especially with the active camo -- it recharges pretty quickly, so at times quick escapes was achieved thanks to it. Fantastic review though! 100% agree on the Chopper. Breaks my heart that my favorite vehicle feels so clunky now.

Definitely agree with this review, this is an AWESOME game. Only thing I'd say is about the equipment: yes, the Grappling hook was the most used one, especially for moving in the map, but during combat segments I found myself using all of them, constantly switching over them, using them off colldown basically. Made the game much more fun. If you find the hook just too powerful, just don't use it, you choose the buttons you press. Amazing game, good review :)

The problem with infinite is that nothing about the game pops out as me as super memorable. There’s a reason why levels like Assault On the control room, pop out at you, Delta Halo, Gravemind, The covenant, Halo etc they have this unique feeling about them, they get you excited soemthing about the way the music comes in as well it’s just all very memorable and Infinite does not have that.

I built my own PC for this game. While I couldn't get an RTX card for cheap, I am happy nonetheless to find this game runs well with a GTX 1660. I did notice quite a bit of stuttery animations throughout the campaign, but this didn't really break my immersion that much, since its probably a shortcut the game takes to keep the fps at 60. Overall, 343 did a great job with this game IMO. Its a nice spin on traditional Halo & carries the story in a way that feels like a genuine Halo sequel. My only real gripe is less to do with Halo, but more the nature of live service games. At some point, the plug is going to be pulled on this game. Its going to die, and no one will be able to play it ever again if that happens, save for cracking it. When that time comes, I hope 343 has some kind of end of life plan to keep this game, or at least the singleplayer playable after the servers are shut down & used for something else.

Boring story but thats fine for a set up/ending as they have kind of ignored 5 and started again. DULL story levels, how many boring flat lifeless installation corridors do we need to walk down!? its nearly EVERY mission. No levels involving marines fighting back or the UNSC fighting the banished at all, the scorpion approach was something thats expected and shouldnt be a highlight. Side missions were lazy and generic, no story to them or real reward. They didnt affect the game or the world in anyway at all. Blowing up fuel or vehicle bases didnt give them less vehicles or weapons. The marines in trouble being highlighted took away the feeling it was an open world, exploring it and the idea that Marines were still holding out, it just put them on a map for you to go too. Littering the map with collectables for MP is just straight padding the length out. a REAL open world game would have quests or missions that dont affect the main story, but add to it or at least world build. Have missions helping Marines counter attack or ANYTHING interesting? The Spartan Killer....they went on and on and on about was just a boss at the end of the game, we didnt see him or hear him or have any interaction during the game to make him feel like a threat. The thruster or the hook should be a dedicated button, on console anyway, the idea you cant quickly select the thruster and the hook is idiotic when the game is trying to have more mobility. You cant hook and then change to thrust to change back to hook again quickly using the D pad, dont copy Doom Eternal and then do a WORSE job. The COMICAL amount of explosive fuel barrels around, who designed this!? The ammo crates just refilling your guns, human guns too, looked stupid and took you out of the world they are trying to build. I feel theres a very good template here for the next game, but this one was just disappointing and felt low effort. I understand they scrapped everything or most of the game with the delay but the blueprint is there but the open world was SO basic and dull. No mission replay and NO CO OP??!! IGN 9 out of 10 my ass

There are times where it does suck to realize that I'm in the minority of players, at least vocally from what I've seen, who enjoyed Halo 5. But then I have to remind myself that a lot of that love comes from the appearance of Blue Team, of the lore behind Locke's team. Basically, a lot of background items that regular enjoyers of Halo may not notice nor care for. That being said, great review mate. I think 343 has been struggling with how to move Halo forward, in a day and age where other studios have been pushing "Open World" and more monetization (e.g., Halo 5's battle packs). Hopefully 343 fulfills their promises on improvements to the campaign and multilayer. Fingers crossed for a return of Spartan Ops (probably just me haha...).

I feel the need to argue a point you made. Escheraum choosing to not send his army after MC actually makes sense in the lore because of his obsession with Chief. He's been watching for a while and realized what no one else has. You don't beat the Master Chief with an army, sending an army after him is how you lose. The only things to ever canonically beat Chief are the Gravemind (a creature equivalent to a living supercomputer the size of an aircraft carrier), The Daidact (in the first encounter, only survived by forerunner help), and Cortana's big robots (basically a covenant glassing cruiser on steroids, but without a crew). Chief was all but designed to fight and dismantle armies, it's the thing he's best at. His only real weakness is when you DONT give him an army to fight.

I also wish the jarring and frankly basic looking vehicle explosions were fixed up. Oh, and holy crap does the AA in this game suck it can be a blurry smeary mess when moving. I have a feeling, the halo setpieces of old are gone - a relic of the past now. What we'll be getting is likely expansion of zeta halo, more locations - deserty like behemoth, snowy, swampy and much more. But it is sad because the fact is, within an single small open world like this they can never fit so many biomes seamlessly. Also this begs the question, what is next for halo after halo infinite? Will there ever be another halo or will this live service halo become like destiny and only get content packs, dlcs and story additions but staying within this zeta halo.

22:00 - I like the discussion here, and I would actually find it really cool if something big happened in the end-game that changed the open-world layout. I think Sekiro pulled that exact mechanic off really well. Spoiler, yes, but in the end-game a rival faction literally invades and burns most of the early-game area to the ground, and it made fighting through that old area again hit differently. So if the actual mechanics are done well, the emotional/narrative impact that an all-out Banished counterattack would have on the game could be phenomenal! Hopefully we see something like that with the future DLCs I've heard rumors about.
@swesolen9205

I have to say, the "lack" of different environments is what makes this part of Zeta Halo unique. Other Halo games take place in different places, but Infinite takes place in a specific relatively small area of a Halo ring. It wouldn't suddenly be way better if there was snow or desert in specific part of this area. I think 343 could have done this, but decided not to. It would just have been weird running around on 'Rdr2-map', but even smaller than that. This place is hostile and should feel a bit off, its a part of the whole unique feeling this (in my opinion) fantastic game delivers.
