What a great stuff! I´m 64 and can assure you that if these albuns continue to be superb nowadays, imagine what they meant in the time they were launched. I lived in that time, and each album that we discovered was something to be understood, used to and, after all, we started to love them from then on. The seventies were plenty of good albuns and great songs, that we are still listening to in the 21st century. Congratulations for the seletions, I couldn´t agree more.

Great selection! It was nice to see 'Moving Waves' Focus in there. I'm a Brit living in the Netherlands. I cut my teeth on prog rock back in the late 60's early 70's and have amassed rather a daunting vinyl collection. Despite their modest contribution to the international rock and prog scene it's majorly bizarre that most Dutch people haven't even heard of Focus. I actually discovered them when I was living in my home town near Liverpool. thanks!! 💫

Maybe album title Red was because when a bands record engineers don't want the sound to get too loud for the microphones and get distorted sound when indicator needle goes from in the green into the dangerous red area. They show the needle going into the red area on a photograph on the back of the cd. The inside gatefold on Dark Side Of The Moon shows the visual trace of a heartbeat, which does feature throughout the album.

Yes a fairly traditional and valid list of choices. However Camel are a very conspicuous omission. If you have only recently come across Van Der Graff then they may be off your radar currently. Also worth checking out; Alan Parsons Project, Magnum, Renaissance and the criminally always overlooked Saga. GIven the obvious weight of 70's inclusions, a more rounded and up to date list should take note of at least one album by both Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree.

Like another said, most of these I grew up with. I had heard the term progressive rock at the time, now though labeled as ‘prog’. Surprised at some of the top 10 here. For example I would never put any other KC album above In the Court of the Crimson King. Once Greg Lake left the band it just wasn’t the same. Also surprised to see so many Rush albums. That might just be a product of my generation. If you do like Rush so much I’m surprised Caress of Steel is missing. My fav Rush album, flowed by 2112. I do agree with your top two. Hard to argue with those.

A majority of these I grew up with but we never considered anything prog, we just considered it great music. Just a few weeks ago I started surfing "prog rock" on KZitem and I can't believe I never listened to Gabriel-era Genesis given some of my top favorite bands are Grateful Dead, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc. I think I've purchased a few dozen albums in the last couple of weeks as my journey into classic progressive progresses. A few others I have recently discovered are Camel, Caravan, Eloy, Gentle Giant, Marillion. One I never see on a list of prog lists, maybe its more space prog, I'm not much into labels, is Planet P Project's self-titled album and Pink World by Tony Carey who was keyboardist on the Rainbow Rising album with Dio and Blackmore. Why Me made a splash for awhile on radio. If you don't want to label it prog, call them concept albums, but based on your list, you may find them interesting. Anyway, so much great music to explore. Life is good! Thanks for sharing your favorites.

Prog rock is a difficult genre to define. I think the one definition that makes a band "prog" is unusual time signatures, frequent change of time signature, tempo, key, chord progression and mood changes throughout a single song. A song doesn't have to be long and epic or touch intellectual or fantastical subject matters in its lyrics. That's why even the first two albums by Boston, which most would consider pop-oriented arena rock, can be also defined as prog rock because some of their early songs have those structural complexities. Technically all jazz fusion bands are prog rock using that definition, or the avantgarde of Frank Zappa and Magma, for that matter. On the other hand, early Deep Purple had some long and technical songs with multiple parts, but they were structurally simple and therefore not prog, but Uriah Heep, a similar sounding band, had odd time signatures with frequent changes on early albums and therefore they can be considered prog.

@@elimalinsky7069 I like your definition, however, as it is with any descriptor that is this general, St. Stephen from the Grateful Dead should be considered Prog, but it is never on any list. Personally, the Dead are in their own class that should never be put in a "group" assigned by the sociologists. That was the biggest crime of the century. No prog inferences intended. :) My point is that labels often, as much as they are helpful, are also misleading. Thus I disdain labels. With that said, I like your definition of Prog. It is very helpful but also shows the limitations. All said, if its good music, it deserves a listen! I have found so much great music by perusing the Prog lists on KZitem and am very pleased that I have! Can't believe how much music I have missed out on over the years!

There are no bands that can pull this quality off today. They're all way to generic. This period you cover is the greatest epoch of music in the modern era ever. 1968 - 1980 the absolute best period.

Mike Oldfield : "Ommadawn" and Camel : "The Snowgoose" (or maybe "Moonmadness") Marillion : Misplaced Childhood" and Genesis "Selling England by the pound" are missing . But Supertramp and ELO wasn't considered as prog rock at the time, it was rather pop rock . Asia, though were formed by former prog rock stars plays AOR / FM music.

There are so many 70s albums that you could of included and all that without a mention of deep purple, black sabbeth, mike oldfield.rick wakeman to name but a few. just a shame there all on CD i think all bar two of the list i have on vynal and bought when they where released. If you can get hold of a copy try listening to White Noise, an electric storm. That will blow you mind 🤪 headphones required lol

Enjoying watching this & poring thru’ comments at the same time. However, only 3mins in & … ‘Out of the Blue’?? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fucking great album: I remember buying it the day it was released. But, ‘Prog’?

For Kansas, the best choice is Song For America....for Rush, Permanent Waves for ELO, Face The Music...no Camel or Spock's Beard?

How could you forget the name Emerson Lake and Palmer when you're holding the freaking disc right in front of you. And only at number 22 that is one of the albums that introduced the world to progressive rock and contains the Barbarian and knife edge which for all purposes were the first two prog metal songs😮

About 30 of the 35 are English bands. Wow they dominated this era.

This is a great comprehensive list excepting “Rush”. I’ve seen them perform live several times starting in 1974. I just don’t get them as a progressive rock group. To me “Rush” is more derivative than progressive.

Regarding ABWH, I viscerally hate the song Teakbois. So I replaced it by Vultures in the City, B-side of Brother of Mine single. It makes a much better album to my ears!
