Making a return to her usual Belmond duties, 35028 Clan Line would make a trip around Kent on the Belmond British Pullman “Golden Age of Travel by Steam” circular, from London Victoria to Dover and back.
On this occasion, the engine would be decked out in full Golden Arrow regalia, and sporting red nameplates, to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the last Golden Arrow to run, on the 30th September 1972. Despite an unpromising weather forecast, we would be very lucky with the rain on this outing.
Starting at Sole Street, the engine is captured on the climb of Sole Street bank, shutting off as it reaches the summit. A second shot was captured, after an intense chase, at Selling on the 1 in 100 climb towards Canterbury. Having lost her feet further down the climb, Clan Line is seen cautiously passing through with the sanders on full, just as a rain shower had begun. The final shot comes from Philpots Lane in Hildenborough, on the climb to Sevenoaks tunnel, with the engine making a fine soundtrack, just audible over the road traffic, as it lifts its heavy train away from Tonbridge.
