I took Amtrack from Denver to Roseville , California a few years back , riding in coach. The overnight was bad because we stopped in Salt Lake City very late and the people that got on and sat behind me and talked ALL night. No sleep for me. The train was pretty dirty. I had to use antibacterial wipes to clean everything when I first got on. The food was ok, but not great. I loved the observation car. The coffee was great. The views were worth it. I would do it again but get a sleeper car. You see things you cannot see in a car road trip.

I took the California Zephyr from Chicago to Grand Junction, CO this summer. Do to a variety of circumstances (brake trouble, the crew maxing out the hours they could work and having to park the train until a new crew could be brought in, torrential rains, tunnel trouble near Winterpark, CO) we were almost 12 hours late getting into Grand Junction. It was the middle of the night instead of mid-afternoon. Never again.

One thing to expect about long distance Amtrak travel is to expect delays. Freight trains have priority and if they are delayed Amtrak is delays. Your trip delays was at that extreme level. I did that trip years ago and we got in 3 hrs late. And with limited meal service that adds to the experience. Imagine those on coach.

I have taken the Amtrak Coast Starlight trip from Los Angeles to Seattle many times, and have never experienced the delays you had, sorry you had such bad luck, especially not having the dining car, wow, that has never happened to me. Do not be discouraged with Amtrak, use your 20% credit and try another trip. The Los Angeles to Chicago trip is amazing, as well as the East Coast. I have traveled Amtrak as far as Boston and highly recommend rail travel. If you are in a hurry, and want to travel at a low price, I highly recommend flying, as I have flown to 120 countries around the world. However, I have done train trips in over 50 countries and I always enjoy unexpected delays as it adds flavor to the trip. This is just my humble opinion. ~ Dave T. San Diego, CA.

I have traveled on Amtrak across the country (Houston to PA - R/T & Houston to Southern CA to PA to Houston) twice, & we never had anywhere near the issues y'all had. The occasional delays are to be expected, but nowhere near the extent that y'all experienced in your video. I've even watched numerous videos on KZitem of people taking the Coast Starlight, & they never have any problems. Y'all were just an anomaly, & please don't let it turn you off from riding Amtrak in the future. Seriously, y'all were just part of an extremely rare case. I am glad that you noticed how amazing the Amtrak staff are on the train. We've always had nothing but absolutely amazing staff in our trips, & from watching tons of Amtrak KZitem videos, the majority have had nothing but great staff onboard. Thank you for sharing your crazy experience & unbelievably extremely (can't express that enough) rare Amtrak experience, & I truly hope that you don't allow it to keep you from taking Amtrak in future.

Your journey on Amtrak is a true testament of what can go wrong. Whenever I decide to ride Amtrak's long-distance trains, I give myself an extra day between connections (trains, planes, or cruises). Trains can be delayed by 10 hours or more due to equipment failures, derailments, accidents, or weather. Amtrak's objective is to get passengers to their destinations safely. One thing I've noticed is some travelers have no regard for others in Sightseer Lounge Cars by taking up space all day long although everyone's been asked to limit their time to 1-2 hours during daylight hours-particularly while going through scenic areas.

Get back on the rails! I've been on all Amtrak routes and have been delayed but nothing as dramatic as yours. I think the Amtrak "universe" wanted to test your resolve. There is nothing so romantic as traveling thru the US on Amtrak, even weight the delays. If you don't make exact plans for the end of your trip, you'll enjoy the ride so much more. Enjoy the journey, as they say. That's what it is all about. And how was Seattle? A lovely city I have been to many times. . See you again...on the rails.

Just recently took an Amtrak from Salem OR to Olympia WA and then to Seattle WA and I was throughly impressed and surprised by both the amount of leg room, the amount of room to store baggage and suitcases and the overall pleasant experience. To be completely honest, I think this makes train travel that more exciting. Delays gives you more value for money - when you have the time. Obviously the 12-hour period when you couldn't leave the train is subpar, but I think when you're able to actually go out and explore during delays, it adds substantially to the experience. I would definitely take this trip.

My sister and her husband took an Amtrak round trip cross country from Chicago to the West Coast. They paid for the top tier and were constantly disappointed. They were on several trains and on each the toilets in their suite belched gas on the hour, at all hours. The train constantly had to go on a siding to allow much longer freight trains to pass, causing constant delays. At one point they were dumped at a train station in the middle of the night with all their luggage and no taxi service to take them to the paid hotel accommodations. They never made a stop within four hours of the scheduled time and often were many, many more hours late. The food was barely cafeteria quality. They never got to use the observation car because people who did not book sleeping quarters would fill it up before they could make their way to the one observation car. So they only saw the view from one side of the train the entire trip. None of the sleeping compartments had locks on any of the trains and they had to go to a separate car to access their luggage, which also was not locked or otherwise secured. I love doing day trips on the train, but do your research before booking an overnight trip.

But some advice for next time take some food in the luggage and a little miniature griddle to cook it on. Take something to drink. Probably ought to include some clothing for all seasons in case you get caught in a drought or snowstorm. What TML through is beyond rare on Amtrak. I've taken Amtrak across the country on very long trips, & we never ever had any major issues. Delays are normal on Amtrak, & they're just a part of the slow & relaxed travel pace of current train travel in America. It never bothered us, nor did I ever see/hear anyone else complain about it. The staff are absolutely the friendliest, most caring, most helpful, & most professional individuals I've ever had the pleasure to have take care of us while traveling. They're truly amazing. Watch other KZitem highly rated content creators that travel on Amtrak all the time, & it's beyond extremely rare to go through what TML went through. Especially on the Coast Starlight route. I watch train travel KZitemrs all of the time, & have never seen them go through anything like TML went through, nor have they we've mentioned any such things. We're currently planning another Amtrak trip ourselves, & we greatly look forward to the smooth travels overall that Amtrak regularly provides.

Amtrak is at the mercy of freight trains, thus all of the delays. Take your time getting to your destination. Don't plan connections that you might miss due to delays. I definitely recommend ear plugs. Trains have to blow their horns when going over traffic intersections, and they might also block wheel sounds if you are on the lower level. My husband & I have done both roomettes and the bedrooms. We certainly love traveling by Amtrak. Seeing all of the parts of the country you'd miss flying, meeting lots of people who also love traveling by train, and arriving at your destination rested if you're used to driving. We usually drive from Cleveland to New Orleans to visit family and at this point, it takes us around 3 days. (65 years old) Add cost of meals, gas, and hotels when considering price. Rooms include the price of your meals. We've gone from Cleveland to New Orleans on Amtrak twice now. Cleveland to Chicago via Lakeshore Limited, then Chicago to New Orleans via the City of New Orleans. If you are over 60, you may also qualify for a 10% discount.

We've taken 4 trips on amtrak and only 1 had no issues. It was from the bay area to Sacramento. The next trip we flew and drove across the country stopping/staying in different states. The plan was to take the train back from Chicago to Sacramento. Crazy stuff happened every leg of the trip. Well due to a flight cancelation and many flight delays we were going to miss the train, so i called to see if we can get on the train the next day. Well we 'lucked out' they had 1 sleeping car left. So we get to the station early and hang out in the nice lounge. Then we board the train...We get into our sleeping car and i set my duffle bag on the floor while we are getting situated. I picked my bag up and the bottom was soaking wet. Luckily it didn't soak through. Then we realized the carpet is absolutely sopping wet, squishy! We let the porter know he said they probably cleaned the carpet and give it some time to dry. Well it NEVER dried. Hours later we told the porter again and he said the train was full and we couldn't switch our room until the late afternoon the next when people got off in Denver. We had to put on ours shoes everytime our feet were going to touch the floor. We woke up the next day and a corner of my husband's sheet was touching the floor and was wicking up brown liquid. Now we know why there was 1 room left. They did switch our room and they gave us future travel credit. Well with some of that credit we decided to take the train to visit friends in Reno. The ride there was great, relaxing and pretty comfortable. The train home? We get to the station and the train is delayed a few hours and they weren't sure when it would actually arrive. If we didn't want to wait there would be a bus going to Sacramento and they would give us credit for the inconvenience. We decided to take the bus. Well as soon as the driver closed the doors and started driving off he announced that someone one the last trip broke the bathroom so we would have to wait till Colfax to use a restroom. We get to Colfax and the driver tells us we have 10 minutes and the bus won't wait. There are only 2 one person bathrooms and bus load of people you do the math, not to mention someone decided to wash up in one of them and i don't mean just their hands. Well we all made it back on the bus and to Sacramento. Well we still had credits from the Chicago trip and now from the Reno trip, enough to go to San Diego for free. It was coach but comfortable enough. The train down was perfect. Had some great views including the ocean. The trip back was an absolute nightmare. It was fine leaving San Diego, but i think it was right before we were getting into L.A. we had what they call a trespassing strike. In other words the train hit a person on the tracks. All along the section we were in were homeless camps. We had to sit there for hours while they did the investigation. Thats when you see the ugly side of human nature. Someone's loved one is dead and you had people drinking it up and partying and others pissed off that they are delayed. No regard for the life that was lost. After awhile we went to food car (not a dining car) to get something to eat since we hadn't eaten any breakfast. Well we had waited too long. Most the food was gone, so we grabbed a couple of snacks and went back to our seats. It was 4 or 5 hours later we pull into L.A. and they tell us to go into the station in a certain section and wait. We waited a couple hours thinking we would be getting back on the train. Nope they arranged busses to take us to the Bakersfield station where we would catch another train. The bus was crammed full, gross bathroom and so hot. We get off at Bakersfield and nobody told us anything. We got some snacks out of the vending machine and waited. Some folks after awhile went to the counter to find out what's going. Come to find out we had to purchase tickets for the train because it was a different route and was only going to Stockton! Well everyone bought their tickets and they gave some food vouchers. Finally the train showed up, they brought it in just for us because there was no more trains scheduled out of that station. Everyone was tired, hungry and angry from the lack of information. The crew was getting frustrated because everyone is grilling them and they weren't told anything either other than they were going to have to work overtime. After awhile they finally open the food car which of course everyone was heading to. It is now about 6pm and we boarded the first train 5 or 6 am. We get to the food car and people start ordering from the menu. Hamburger, sorry we don't have it, ok a hotdog then, sorry don't have it. My husband who is the calmist man finally couldn't take it anymore snapped and yelled why don't you just tell us what you do have. She got upset which i completely understand this isn't her fault and she has no idea what we have been going through. I had my husband go back to our seats while i got us something to eat. We get to Stockton to find out we have to get off and board another bus to Sacramento. 10 minutes after we pull into the Sacramento train station our original train pulls into the station. Do to the fact that we paid for the trip with credits, we didn't any get credit back for this trip, not that we would have used anyway.

I will drive with the Coast Starlight in nearly two weeks (17.-18.10.) and was totally looking forward to it... But your video scared me a lot 😶 Well I guess you had just bad luck (ok, thats what I hope 😅) and it's not normal. But I loved to see, that both of you made the best of it.

Roomettes on the upper floor are best for sleep. Less bumpy and sleeping with your feet toward the direction of travel. Somehow, in the rooms, sleeping diagonal to the train's momentum disrupts sleep, I find.

I like how the American trains have observation cabin. Your stations and trains are very different to Australia. Thats a huge delay. I felt sorry for you in Eugene you looked so defeated. I think the luxury train in the Rocky Mountains is magical. It would make a great video. Or one of those luxury buses over night travel.

Oh man! I was looking forward to this video. But I wasn’t expecting the outcome. I’m sorry you guys had such a bad experience. I think this is the first time I see you so disappointed of a trip. I believe in second chances, but they should’ve given you guys a free trip, not just 20% off.

So sorry that you had such a rough time! I've heard that Amtrak is notorious for those kinds of delays.

Yeah, Amtrak doesn’t own most of the tracks they operate on. They need their own dedicated tracks and then delays would be minimal.

I wish the U.S. had quality trains like Europe, our tracks are mostly used for freight, and are in terrible shape my wife and I took Amtrak from L.A. to Chicago and loved it, food was great, ya need to accept your gonna get tossed around unexpectedly at times.

I take an Amtrak train from New Mexico home to Southern California where I’m from usually once a year. It’s tough sleeping on a train and there’s always some kinda chaos. Hahah. But it’s cheap so. I guess it’s understandable? I would be bummed if I paid a ton for a private room though. Those rooms can cost easily $800-$1000+ ! They should be serving steak dinners for that price haha.

We went on the Sunset Limited with two kids. The train was delayed for 8 hours but it was at the start so we got to wait at home. Yes I would ride Amtrak again. We had the bedroom with private bath. There is nothing like it. California Zephyr has better scenery.

I love your video, so sorry you had a rough time! I've taken Amtrak and couple times and both times it was delayed by quite a bit of time. I decided that Amtrak was not for me. Better to rent a car. PS: 20%????????? Outrageous!!! They should have offered 50% at least!

I have looked into trains recently but the cost was always more than 2 or 3 times other ways to get to where I was going. 25 years ago I did San Diego-Santa Barbara-San Fransisco and had a good experience but I was in college, and in no hurry, so the many delays didn’t bother me at that point and the views were great. I want to try the Bright-line in FL at some point tho.

Honestly, I would give it another try. I have had unscheduled problems and layovers by plane, car, and even cruise ship. I could never judge an entire form of travel by only 1 experience.

Amtrak marketing should reach out to them and offer them a free trip to make up for this.

Hey I really enjoy watching your videos, specially with your dad. Trains in America have small compartments as compared to Indian trains. The hygeine and service is great in your trains, unlike in our Indian trains. But, please stop complaining about the trains stopping midway due to a problem that they did not create. This happens and you got to accept it. The views are AWESOME, would like to someday see it myself. Enjoy the scenaries. Go again on some other train that mostly covers hills and mountains. Beat of luck. Love from New Delhi, India 🇮🇳

I have never rode on Amtrack, and only twice on any train in my 62 years on this planet. Neither of those trips were overnight or covered long distances. Watching your video reminds me just how lucky I am. No train tips on the agenda before watching this, and none planned after watching this. It does no good to gripe, so I will just skip it and avoid any reason to gripe. My automobile works just fine. Go back to the automobile, you will get there quicker and the videos will be more upbeat.

Well you should do another train trip because you already went through all the bad stuff on this one. The next one should be smooth sailing. Sorry you had to deal with so many delays. The dining car being closed was definitely a bummer. Considering you paid for full meals, I think you should have received more than 20%. You two both made the best of a bad situation.

Great adventure great feedback on everything. Kudos to the crew for keeping you guys taking care of it. It’s disappointing that Union Pacific which owns those tracks quite a bit has been messing up with Amtrak on numerous delays. I would say give another round on that trip and try again. It was the perfect storm on a lot of things, but I would suggest giving Amtrak another shot because they did give you 20% off of the trip. I would suggest doing it again and try a suite.

Your videos are always well done and you, whether with Amy or Pops, are interesting and truthful but always optimistic. You have to roll with the proverbial punches to enjoy travel. HOWEVER, this trip was just awful. I have watched other Amtrak travel videos. As an American I feel embarrassed that this is our country’s train travel. Kudos for staying positive as long as you did. The last insult was what they offered for all your discomfort🙄. Thanks for all the great videos and beautiful sites.
