It was cool seeing how fast you caught and went past the other boats

Yes, I enjoyed that particularly since they were fit and at the top of their game, and I’m a computer-driving sailing enthusiast that is very much not at the top of his game, and they probably didn’t get their boats from a construction site from the mate of a bloke off Facebook

It does look like there’s not enough gearing. I know you’re running a bugs cam so you don’t have that adjustment, am I right in saying you changed horizontal recently, the amount of flap vs overall foil area may be different on your foil vs what it was set with before requiring adjustment in the overall amount of gearing required, shortening wand length does add gearing but looks like you need even more, the boat appears floaty and takes a long time to change its ride height

Yes, I did swap from a fixed tip foil to this one with a full width hinge which should be more responsive. I think a lot of the floatiness is coming from the slop in the axle (shown right at the end). But yeah, you’re right in that I need to get the cam operating in the part with max gearing

Slop is a big thing in any Moth, get rid of all of it in every single linkage, it's a killer, and put loctite (blue) on that grub screw on the cam/wand connection. It's a little hard to tell on the video but it looks like you're sailing pretty bow up a lot of the time, you want to sail at worst level, even bow down; are you already maxed out on the rudder lift? If this is the case, because you're sailing bow up your main foil AoA is quite high so even when you go into neg flap it's not as effective...but like I said hard to tell. When the boat is on the side on-shore what sort of flap movement do you have as you move the wand through it's range? You probably want 12-14mm ish (measured at the back edge of the flap) at your level, this will tell you instantly if you have enough gearing. For the wand, check it at max length vs the main foil length, parallel to the waterline, the wand obviously needs to be shorter at full extension (say 100mm or so) and you want probably 300mm range from there. Also when you were moving the wand on the shore the cam following roller inside the bowsprit didn't seem to be tracking the cam very well....I could not see it moving anyway, had you disconnected the shock chord to the foil bellcrank or something? Or am I not seeing something....because that should be tracking the cam at all times. Also, with the wand at roughly 45deg the flap should be in the neutral position, this will get your ride high in the ballpark position and tweak it from there. The hard thing to pin down on the moth is there are so many adjustments that compound other things, which compound others, can be hard to track down the root cause. Start at the beginning, get rid of the slop, wand length, flap movement, main foil AoA, rudder AoA trim, ride height and go from there.

Thanks for the detailed comment! I had disconnected the foil when I did the last bit showing the slop on the axle which is why the follower wasn’t moving with the wand. I did some measuring last night and compared it to a friends boat, my wand appears to be at least 100-200mm too long. I’ll tip the boat over tonight and fit the foil and check the length relative to the foil/waterline. I can go further bow down on the rudder most of the time but it generally just forces me back into the water. I’m hoping that sorting out the wand length/slop will allow me to increase the ride height, go faster and level out the platform. The main foil AoA is around 1.8 degrees, I spent a few hours sorting that out recently. Thanks again for the comment!

I dont know much about the way your boat is set up but when mine starts proposing downwind ive found that its because i dont have enough AOA on the rudder and if i give it some it stops acting like that. Thinkt he rudder lift out generates the main and drives the bow down. Little freaky riding with the bow up a bit but its smoother

Thanks Rob, do you mean you’re winding the bow down/increasing lift on the transom? I have made some big setup changes, hoping for wind tomorrow to try them out!

@@TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr i wind up like 1/2-1 turn on the tiller when im really cookin so the bow is more up. Kinda can feel the elevation of the boat calm down a bit in the situations ive been in. The mach 2 i bough also had a sloppy wand system which ive since upgraded to the KA one. When it warms up hopefully i can try it out.
