What's funny is we spent the morning complaining about work/meetings/planning/and projects going awry. Then someone mentioned, "We're trying the new Agile Methodology and blah blah blah..." Then I come here and see 1 man on 1 project and there's no planning committee, no steering committee, no "crawl, walk, run" nonsense. Quite refreshing. Thanks for the relaxation. I'm sending this to my friends for their enjoyment, too.

For dings such as the pick scratches, I'd recommend using blonde shellac to seal the wood and before lacquering. It helps avoid the wet look that some repairs acquire, because the shellac dries clear.

Greetings from southern Wisconsin Jerry; As usual another great video. I really appreciate your going into detail on the small things that give better sound to an instrument. Some of these things would take us years to learn on our own. If Antonio Stradivarius had done the same, we would have a lot more great violins out there at a price that people could afford. Peace and prosperity to you and your family.

Thank you Jerry. I have a broken bridge guitar project that I have been contemplating for sometime (It's a beautiful black guitar, that I picked up at the local recycle/dump, with a huge crack/slice along the bridge pins). Your videos have given me the confidence (and the techniques) I need to green light the project. I particularly like your solution for finding/setting the correct intonation (a major concern that had prevented me from attempting the repair in general). Great job...

That looked familiar. I had the same issue with my own D-18 many years ago, the only difference being that the saddle slot on the old bridge was milled straight across, with open ends. The crack developed at the base of the slot, allowing the saddle to pull the slot open. I ordered a new bridge from Martin (which had closed ends on the saddle slot), had a local shop install it, and it’s been fine since. Thanks for another excellent episode!

Jerry, it would be neat if you milled a small slot in the top of your bridge removal iron to accept your removal knife. Sort of like the way a knife goes into a cutlery set. that way you could rest it there while you heat the bridge/knife at the same time.

I was talking to Jeff Bradshaw a couple of days ago, letting him know I got my guitar kit and got it built - its nothing expensive, but I was telling him, watching your videos helped me put the guitar together because it came with no instructions. It's an DIY - electric bass off of Amazon. I set up the string height and the intonation just like you do Jerry for your guitar set-ups. It sounds pretty good for a cheap guitar. I'm going to replace the strings though, the one's that came with it are not high quality. So for anyone else thinking of buying one - there's no instructions - so watch Jerry's video's for tips and tricks :D

Sometimes, if it needs it, I clip the little brass rings from the end of the old strings and slip them on the new strings before I pull them up through the plate and bridge. It takes up space so that the extra windings on the string ends do not protrude over the saddle.

Love the video and content, but noticed that steel cup could be adapted to make an excellent side bender. My old set up was a small fire extinguisher (With side vent holes drilled in a line along one side) that I'd adapted to fit on the nozzle of a heat gun. This could be used as a small side bender by itself, or inserted into a short length of steel pipe (4" or 6" dia) with mounting brackets bolted on so it could be set into a vise. Heat adjusted by rotating the vented pipe to direct heat. For bridge set-up I tend to use my Dremel mounted in it's router base, with bit set so it barely cuts through the finish :) Clean up using a narrow scraper sharpened in the traditional way.

have you ever thought or tried to use a router to remove a bridge or reduce the bulk of it?
@arctichare8185
4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps a silly question, but if you definitely do not intend to reuse the bridge, would it help to cut (sand, shave, whittle) most of the bridge away and just peel off the remaining bridge material afterward?
@zapa1pnt
4 жыл бұрын
It would not just "peel" off. It is not "stuck "on, it is glued. If it were stuck to the surface, with something like double sided tape, it could be peeled off. This is two pieces of bare wood, glued together. They, basically, become one piece of wood. Heat must be applied, to beak the bond. Also, if it became as thin as you suggest, while peeling, it could tear the top where it is not yet ready to come loose. Imagine it as a length of tape, on your arm, with with super glue under the last 1/4 inch. When you pull the tape, it pulls off easily, untill that last 1/4 inch, where it rips your skin off. Not good. 😧
@richardcrompton6009

Question? If you're not keeping the bridge could you file it down or make it much thinner and flatter so the heat transfers faster?
