It appears to me that Colorado is training their people not to shoot wildly, and to force muscle memory under stress, as in real life situations. In my opinion as a retired LEO, this makes sense, because under stress, officers tend to fire more shots than needed, and even wounding hits can be effective. The point is police officers don't shoot to kill, but to stop the threat.

The "you miss, you lose" standard should be applicable to a center mass zone, like the C-Zone on a USPSA silhouette. I was amazed by the terrible shots that passed in my academy class and in-service qualifications. Marksmanship is too important to allow any failures on a live-fire qual. Our defensive driving and defensive tactics exams were all pass/fail, allowing no mistakes. Marksmanship should be held to the same standard.

So far, this course is the most demanding. I like that the course demands that all shots must strike the bad guy rather than allowing shots to go sailing off who knows where. It may not be a thing, but it has reignited my interest in reloading.

I think this is probably the best course so far. Malfunction clearing, holding a flashlight, and especially shooting on the move are all good skills to have. The Colorado Qualification course is the most realistic. It's the best till date. A living target has neighter score rings on it and they left the target as natural as possible. It's a realistic human size target. They want the shooter to hit the target and not bystanders. Any hit at the target will do something they assume, and thats is realistic. I would be able to do this as well but can not shoot the pistol single handed so I would not qualify. They should throw the handcuffs at the target in the one stage. Best Course would be to have moving Targets involved to make it as realistic as possible. Like a gang of 15 Targets charging the Police officer, Shooting a target in an automobile, hitting a target who runs away at a distance of 75 Yards, hitting multiple targets behind cover at 50 Yards simulating a massive Police gang shootout, hitting a target at 100 Yards with a handgun simulating an Terrorist kill which has a explosive vest with an dead man Trigger, marching foreward while Shooting at Targets behind a ballistic shield, (joke) getting hit in the ballistic vest by a real bullet (by another officer) and firing back hitting the target at 50 Yards, etc.

Can't remember the exact course cause it's been a while but Pennsylvania has a night shoot with a flashlight, you could only turn on the flashlight for a half sec at a time between shoots, some old timers commented we had it easy cause we could support the firing hand with the flashlight hand. They had to hold the light an arms length off to their side, reason being if someone was returning fire they're likely to aim for the light. Good video, thanks.

I am surprised how comprehensive this course was. When you stated in the beginning of the video that this course of fire was 25 rounds; I thought it was going to be basic and easy. Glad to see I was wrong. I thought the same thing about the Oklahoma qual. It seems there is an inverse correlation between the number of rounds fired and the quality of the test. CO and OK don't have a high round count like other states, but they sure have a very efficient and stream lined course. I like it that you don't have to repeat the same drill 2 or even 3 times in a row I wonder how the other states, with a course of fire of less than 30 rounds, compare to these two. This is the best series of KZitem videos I have seen. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated

I think the amount of time the course designer(s) spent considering which critical skills they thought were most important in terms of evaluating an officer's firearm proficiency are evident in this course. It's a bit of a different mix of skills, but yet more forgiving than other courses with regards to accuracy. As a Colorado citizen, I'm trying to rationalize whether it's better, or not. I like that they've worked failure-to-fire scenarios, firing with flashlight and dropping an object (handcuffs) into their qualification. However, they give a bit of a pass on accuracy. I'd hope that all CO LEOs practice to your level of proficiency. I was doing some volunteer work removing barbedwire fencing and was partnered up with a CPW officer. He and I started chatting and he said that the the state has a list of acceptable duty models that can be personally provided by the officer and he had opted for a S&W 1911 E-Series in .45 ACP. Interestingly, I've seen quite a few local and Colorado Parks and Wildlife LEOs carrying a 1911, so a .38 super like this might be acceptable.

I am very glad to see the 100% hit requirement. If a police officer cannot shoot to that standard on a static target, they should not be shooting at all until they improve their skills. The target is quite generous in size, but I suppose if your shots are striking the target they aren't flying off into the background and hitting bystanders even if they aren't immediately disabling to the target. I did try to find the UK qualifications to send you, but unfortunately it seems the curriculum is only available to eligible officers and not to the general public. Maybe an AFO will be able to send you something - I think it would be an interesting comparison! As a qualifier course this makes a good deal of sense. They are testing on a pass/fail basis whether the applicant can run their firearm and keep their shots on target. There is no way to excel but that's not what the course is testing. Firing with the weak hand isn't part of the basics (though still good to practice) so I can understand why they don't make that part of the standard. It'd be a bit silly to fail an otherwise qualified applicant just because they missed with their left hand.

I like all the skillsets that are tested, especially shooting on the move and failure drills. The fact that you cannot miss even one shot does add a level of stress to the qualification. I would like to see a higher round count, which would allow covering other areas like weak hand shooting. I would be a little disturbed if someone qualified with no shots located in the center mass location of the target. Doubtful that would happen often though. The lack of scoring the target does seem like they don't want anyone to get there feelings hurt if they get outshot. We always score our targets, but all that is recorded is a pass or fail.

I think I understand the rationale of Colorado's qualifications standard. Nationally, most police officers miss 50% of the shots they fire in the field. Understandably, this creates a lot of liability. In other words, any hit on a hostile target is preferable to any miss. In some administrator's mind, a hit anywhere on the body of a hostile is going to affect him (or her) in some way, and the bullet will be stopped by the hostiles body, lessening the chance of striking an innocent bystander. Of course, this thinking fails to take into account perpetrators high on PCP, completely enraged individuals, psychotic perps, etc.
@hrfunk
5 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying, but a bullet striking only an arm or the very side of the lower abdomen is probably not going to stop there. Most bullets used for defensive purposes are intended to penetrate deeply into the body's torso. If they strike some smaller/shallower portion of the body they will most likely pass completely through that portion and continue on until they strike something more substantial or gravity and diminishing velocity overcome their ability to remain in flight.
@Handgunslinger
5 жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk Oh, I know; anyone with law enforcement experience would be fully cognizant of the reality of self defense ammo penetration. Administrators typically don't consider such things. When the NYPD first switched to 9x19, they initially had to use FMJ ammo, despite being warned about over penetration of that projectile. After having several lawsuits by people struck after officers had shot perps, they finally switched to 124 gr Speer Goldots.

Once again, great video! I agree with your assessment of the course also. I'd like to see your evaluation of that pistol also in another video as I don't recall one in the past. The .38 super seemed to have quite a lot more recoil also.

@@hrfunk well... it's o.k. Just kidding, great as usual. It does seem to have a bit of a stiff recoil with the loads you worked up but I agree 1100-1300 f.p.s. seems a good velocity.

Great vid as always and did I hear you right that the 38 super has been around since the 30s wow I thought it was a newer type caliber like 40 s&w only a few decades old
@hrfunk

It actually evolved from the 38 ACP which dates from the early 1900’s. The “Super” version was developed circa 1929. It saw quite a bit of use during the prohibition era, but it was eventually overshadowed by the .357 Magnum which debuted in 1935.

The round also gets a bad rap for being the “cartel special”. I’ve always heard that military cartridges are illegal for civilian use in Mexico and some South American countries, so this is common caliber for cartel use. It seems to be getting more popular lately. I saw more .38 super ammo choices yesterday than I did .357 sig.

I've always heard the same thing about Mexico and South America. It's too bad the cartridge isn't more popular today. It nearly matches the .357 Sig in terms of ballistic potential, and top loads encroach on the low end of the .357 Magnum. In a pistol like the 1911, its recoil is easily manageable, and it is certainly accurate enough for most handgun duties.

@@hrfunk Takes the hottest 9mm+P+ rounds to equal the 38 Super. From 1929 to 1935, it was the baddest handgun cartridge.

My thoughts on the qualification standiards of Colorado is a reflection of Colorado itself. Largely and predominantly democratic. I mean come on how much more democratic can you be with the shot placement it's almost as bad as you get a trophy Just for participating. In a gun fight for your life a hit is not a hit regardless of where it's at. A hit only counts when it was put where it's greatly needed. HR funk my sincerest apologies for this post signing political but I worked in Colorado it's kind of hard not to make it some political. But I do applaud the state of Colorado for implementing the malfunction drills and the shooting while in movement. Semper Fi.

No apologies necessary Gunny. The accuracy standard, or the lack thereof, is my biggest criticism of this course. By the way, I’m glad to hear from you again. I was getting a little worried.

Presented very well. I've shot this qualification many times and always passed. At least in my county we have also been required to shoot it in the dark to qualify. A really good flashlight is essential for the 25 yard stage. Thankfully my first night qualification had a full moon. We also have to qualify with every handgun we will carry.
